SIR ALEX FERGUSON might have had the final say - but the whispers from the dressing room were becoming hard to ignore.

Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving - but he won't be lamented. Twelve months ago, when Real Madrid first came calling, Ronaldo was inundated with text messages from senior Manchester United players - urging him to stay. This time, there have been none.

Ronaldo had grown apart from his team-mates, Ferguson had sensed it - and that is why the Old Trafford manager was happy to take Real Madrid's £80million.

On the training ground, they were tiring of his tantrums. On the pitch, they were fed up of his selfishness.

And it culminated in fury from senior players after Ronaldo tried to single-handedly beat Barcelona in the Champions League final last month.

A United insider told the News of the World: "To many, that was the final straw and showed what he had become.

"Wayne Rooney had to change position three times to accommodate Ronaldo. The experienced players in the squad had seen it coming and weren't happy about it.

"Ronaldo had been getting more and more temperamental in training and the others were getting fed up with him. They knew his mind was elsewhere and they thought he was becoming a distraction.

"The senior guys couldn't believe it when he threw the tantrum during the Manchester City game."

That tantrum came after an hour of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on May 10. Ronaldo had fired United ahead with a trademark free-kick and after Carlos Tevez made the points safe on the stroke of half-time, Ferguson decided his Portuguese star would benefit from a rest ahead of the crucial Premier League trip to Wigan three days later.

That decision sparked a furious reaction from Ronaldo - who shook his head in disbelief when he realised his number was up.The winger snatched his training top aggressively and sat on the bench, mouthing his disgust.

Publicly at least, Ferguson brushed aside the incident, witnessed by millions on TV, insisting: "He wanted to stay on. He is in great form. But I've got to look at the big picture. I've got to think about keeping our players as fresh as we can for the games ahead."

Privately, though, there is no doubt Ferguson and many of Ronaldo's United team-mates were irked by the petulant show of defiance.

And as Ronaldo hogged more and more of the limelight, there was increasing sympathy for Rooney - a player, unlike his departing team-mate, who is liked by everyone at Old Trafford and at the club's Carrington training complex.

The England striker was always the one forced to make a positional sacrifice and, towards the end of the season, grew frustrated at being edged out towards the left flank. His annoyance with Ronaldo during the Champions League final in Rome was plain to see.

The departure of Ronaldo should see Rooney play more in his favoured position - the second striker role he has filled so spectacularly for England.

And it will also mean the way is clear for Rooney to be rewarded for his unstinting commitment by being handed a new contract and being made the highest-paid player at Old Trafford.

Rooney, 23, has two years left on his current £100,000-a-week deal but United will open negotiations with his advisers later this summer. And that will lead to a new, six-year deal which will start at a basic £125,000-a-week and rise sharply.

The United insider explained: "Ferguson has always said that if he had to lose either Ronaldo or Rooney, it would be Ronaldo every time. Rooney is the future of United and everyone there knows they can count on his loyalty and his team ethic."

Rooney, of course, was involved in the infamous incident in Gelsenkirchen at the 2006 World Cup which saw Ronaldo winking as the England striker was sent off as Sven Goran Eriksson's team crashed out on penalties. Although Ronaldo was forgiven, the moment was never forgotten.

United, meanwhile are facing a £2.5m scrap with Sporting Lisbon over Ronaldo's switch to the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese club are set to slap in a claim to United for "development costs" during Ronaldo's time at Sporting. They reckon they are entitled to cash from the sensational £80m which will be heading into the Old Trafford coffers.

A Lisbon source said: "Sporting spent a lot of time and money on Ronaldo during his formative years and they feel they are entitled to some compensation."

Real's new president Florentino Perez made Ronaldo his second megabucks capture of the summer after signing Brazil playmaker Kaka from AC Milan for what - for a few days, at least - was then a new world record fee of £62m.

But Spanish sources claim the man who invented the galactico ethos is expected to tie up a £35m deal to sign Valencia's Spanish international striker David Villa this week - making the Spanish international the third high-profile Bernabeu deal inside a fortnight.

But there will certainly be no tears shed around Old Trafford at Ronaldo's imminent departure. And the mood of the players is best summed up by Nemanja Vidic, who was asked about Ronaldo's future before it was confirmed he was heading off.

Vidic declared: "It is not a situation I know anything about but what I will say is that I and the players have total trust in the manager. The fans have seen him over the years lose players and build new teams - but never has he lost that winning mentality.

"No matter who has gone, the manager has continued to be successful. It is the only way he knows. He has lost major players over the last 10 years but he has proved that no player is ever bigger than the club."

. . . And from what a lot of the players saw, Cristiano Ronaldo had begun to think he was just that.

Dao Xuan Tuyen, how dare u chat so much crap!!! Ronaldo best ever? Please. Im a united fan and i do think hes a gifted player. But there is no way he is in the same league as the likes of Zidane, Van Basten, maradonna etc. He is a selfish brat, and his freekicks hit the wall over 70% of the time. Think about how many freekicks he has taken and how many he has gotten on target, let alone how many hes scored. And the freekicks were all caused by his diving in the first place. He needs to grow up. I also think that real are gunna struggle. I mean think about the amount of players that rely on their individual talent rather then working as a team. It wont be 11 vs 11. It will be 11 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1.

first of all ,,,,, am not a mu fan.....
but all i like in mu was ruud ,becks, ronaldo, nani n rooney.....
now a ronaldo less mu seems to be nowhere in tiltle race as we can see strong teams like liverpool , chelsea, arsenal, man city, already are in the hunt to lift the title........
moreover no big player is showing keen intrest in mu....
every one planning for spanish liga......seems like the centre of football attraction is being shifted from england to spain........

anyways may d best team win and all i need to see is good football......

backing liverpool this time......

comparing rooney to ronaldo can only be donne by someone that has no clue about football.rooney will never be worth 80 million, nor be best player in the world. ronaldo wants only to be considerd a legend in the top club in the world REAL-MADRID.

United will be better off without him

By baitsile Kooletile.. Posted June 21 2009 at 7:40 PM.

Ronaldo did his part but Man Utd is bigger than any player. Rooney is more of a prized asset than he was. We need players who will be loyal to the club.
There are many here who cant stand the success of Man Utd and are hoping that this will have some effect.
Ronaldo was good but he is no George Best or Maradona.
The Red Devils will Rule.

By ruben.. Posted June 21 2009 at 4:03 PM.

Glad Ronaldo has gone. The fans never get to find out what happens behind the scenes. The team spirit was upset when there were training arguments between Ruud and Ronaldo. Ruud was forced out in favour of a guy who had to be taught how to play the simple stuff and has now turned on his mentor and the fans. Wrong choice I always thought. Ruud was ultimate goal machine and played for the team.

By Carl.. Posted June 21 2009 at 2:28 PM.

This article made me laugh..this idea that all the united players disliked ronaldo...the still pictures that are included to make it look like the players were getting sick of ronnie in the champs league final are far from credible! Though i do agree with one thing...at times in the champs league final, he was trying to become a one-man show, that much was evident..

By DJ.. Posted June 21 2009 at 12:04 PM.

The most COMPLETE player I have EVER witnessed on the football pitch. The perfect football machine...as if he was created by a computer...of God himself, for the game. It will be a VERY long time before Manchester United recover from his loss.

By Jackal.. Posted June 20 2009 at 10:34 PM.

i think with the departure of ronald, its a big win for thee team. becoz he was really undermining the balance of the team and esp rooney whom i think is the best player at the club. so gud luck to him, but man u will always move on and improve afta the champ league final

By felix maina manu fan.. Posted June 20 2009 at 10:03 AM.

Ronaldo was MU's bread-and-butter for at least three years, and that cannot be disguised. It is true Ronaldo was disconsoled when he did not transfer to Real at the end of last season, but he did noy deny efforts on the pitch. A true football fan will miss Ronaldo, a fantastic player with and without the ball, as he proved in the euro final. By the way, MU lost due to serious blunder in the midfield tactics and that has to be assumed by Ferguson.

By alberto.. Posted June 19 2009 at 11:58 AM.

Dao Xuan Tuyen, what on earth are you talking about ??? The greatest footballer of all-time !!! Listen Ronaldo isn't even in the top ten all-time at old trafford let alone the world. How could any self respecting football fan even suggest that he's in the same league as Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Platini etc. Or if like i, you weren't privileged enough to see them players... Baggio, Van Basten, Zidane the 'other' Ronaldo, or countless others you could mention from my own generation. This whole issue has become absurd and any smart money would not ever bet against United next season. And p.s if Ronaldo (or any human being for that matter ! ), is worth £80 million, then Wayne Rooney is worth 10 Ronaldos and any true united fan with even half a brain will tell you the same.

By Martin.. Posted June 18 2009 at 11:39 PM.

Ronaldo has played well till now, never behaved though. selfish wasting many chances if he is not getting it.Ronney in my belief was the hero who was making him king around the goals. Now he is gone we ought to see ronney shine to outmost.some ppl need to know team spirit befor e they ever learn to win silverware together.I have also noticed nani beinf so shameless he drives the ball towars ronaldo and the whole game is disturbed for their selfish cause. nani should go alos if he has such a view.By Bye Ronaldo.

By seme.. Posted June 18 2009 at 11:59 AM.

Manu will be better when Ronaldo go. I think 80 mil is not worth to him. All Mu fan don't like him because he is so conceited. He should learn from Kaka.

By Dao Xuan Tuyen.. Posted June 18 2009 at 10:10 AM.

We have witnessed the greatest footballer of all time.
I love SAF, good man, great Mentor. Best coach on planet.
But; let's be honest.
The only reason he has not retired is Cristiano.
the greatest player he has ever had.
No team opens up to attack Man u when he is on the pitch.
They keep 5 back.
with a rag tag defense beset by injury and bans, they shattered the goalless minutes record with Cristiano the only player to play every minute. look it up.
when Cristiano is gone, his wonderful coach will retire.
Left foot, right foot, speed, penalty kicks, free kicks, heading, work ethic, endurance, unique style, wicked shot, precision of his passing, plays the most minutes, 49 apperances a year and all with artistry that the fans gladly pay to see.
No other player past or present, on any team, can match this amount and variety of talents. We should all miss those amazing freekicks; standing to address the ball, legs oiled and poised, the connection, the power, the dip and bend, the goal. It was pure theatre.
Not only is he, Manchester United. Cristiano is Football.
We will surely long for him nowthat he is gone.

The joy of football will now disappear from old Trafford and the premier league.
Cristiano Ronaldo is different from any player I have ever seen. No player has ever had this much talent.
I was indifferent to Man u before he arrived.
I have bought $$$$ of manu equipment.

GOOD BYE.
good news is I will learn Spanish watching La Liga.

Ronaldo the best player of the world, but Fergi is perfict.

By Dereje Ayalew.. Posted June 16 2009 at 8:24 AM.

Guys, First of all I am gutted Ronaldo is gone. No doubt about it the kid is a special player. I believe he has gone to early. He should of stayed at old trafford another 2 years. As for replacing him, Fergie needs to find a special player - who can cope with the physical / speed of the premier league on the field and off, but most importantly work and play as a team player.

Tevez, can go too. I don't like his attiude at the end of the season. Talking to the press etc. Got to remember guys - he is a stiker not a defensive midfielder - they should be running around trying to get the ball.

A player I miss Big time is RUUD VAN NISTLEROY. One of the best strikers in the world. Pure, class and a ruthless striker.

We just got to wait and see what happens. Its going to be a tough new season. Chelsea, Liverpool will be strong. Arsenal will be pushing - but i don't believe they have a strong squad.

By Danny.. Posted June 15 2009 at 9:06 PM.

I hope we will be better without ronaldo. His behaviour is bad towards his teammates, and the club is more important than him. Let's move
See you ronaldo

First of all,i would like to thank ferguson for making ronaldo what he his today. And i also wish ronaldo for a great future. We all know that ronaldo is a great player and has help united on several occations, but i want to make it clear to everyone on the global that, united can still move on without ronaldo.People shouldn't think that we cant make it without ronaldo

By ALHASSAN RASHEED.. Posted June 15 2009 at 8:36 PM.

Get a bit of perspective here! Ronaldo's leaving has got nothing to do with wether or not Utd or Real are the bigger club. it has got to do with nationality and culture. Coming from portugal he would always have wnated to play for barcelona or Real. he became a Real supporter. Coming from NI I have no problem in understanding that. Born here you will nearly always want to play for Utd or Liverpool and if given the chance you will always choose that path. As a person i think Ronaldo has alot of learning to do - as a footballer he is sheer genius. As a United season ticket holder I have enjoyed watching him over these 6 years and I'm sorry to see him go. United will carry on nad will become strong again maybe not next year but possibly the year after. That is the normal cycle of football. i wish the lad well, I thank him for his contribution to Man Utd. I hope he does well at Real except if they play us. Now can we please move on.

By Ella.. Posted June 15 2009 at 2:46 PM.

From the start of the season he was as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle. Two firm challenges and no free kick and my baby sister would have played better. We got 9 minutes in the European Cup Final. He was a cry-baby plain and simple. Hopefully Spanish Football will give him unlimited access to everything he wants from Football. An endless amount of free kicks. We are well shut of him as a team

By abdulaziz.. Posted June 14 2009 at 11:56 PM.

Ronaldo will struggle at Real Madrid without Rooney to make him look good. Rooney was and is the real star.

By rob elston.. Posted June 14 2009 at 8:07 PM.

yeah but what player is actually worth that sort of money, im sure jo public is getting fed up with the money that's thrown at players these days, id like to be paid that kind of money, but it's never gonna happen.

By chris. k.. Posted June 14 2009 at 8:01 PM.

Its true that Ronaldo is my favourite. But seriously, if hes gonna act like THAT. Then yeah, no one will miss you at United. Its gonna be hard at Madrid though.

By Robyn.. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:22 PM.

Who cares he is a total idiot anyway now all we need to do is get rid of drogba and the premier will return to the class that we all expect it to be. Ronaldo was a diver and a cheat i lost the love for United because of him it became mundain to watch and glory boy was hogging the lime light. For all of you united fans we have a few players better then ronaldo ie: Ryan Giggs At his age he still has it so chins up its 80M in the bag and a good riddance to bad rubbish.Glory Glory Man United all the way FTW.

By Mike Armstrong.. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:27 PM.

By the way Rooney does not have half Ronaldo's talent, he has the work ethic but Real are not paying $130 million for him are they?

By Albert gunner.. Posted June 14 2009 at 6:55 PM.

Trust me when i say Ronaldo might flop a Madrid. The other top players won't sit aside a watch him alone do his thing like he was at United.

By PKM.. Posted June 14 2009 at 6:29 PM.

i believe the comments chris cope made are absolutly true, but with one exception i don't see madrid doing anything as i see kaka and ronaldo clashing until the team gets settled as i think ron's ego has got to big for him, what a shame it is a good player going bad.

By chris. k.. Posted June 14 2009 at 5:48 PM.

Someone said Ronaldo doesn't have vision. He certainly does. Some of his play with Rooney was amazing as both have vision. He just chooses not to act on the vision a lot and try and do it himself. He *could* play even better at Madrid than at Utd with some of the players they are getting if he starts to utilise his vision and think a bit more. Hope it all goes a bit Pete Tong for Real Madrid myself though :-)

By Raf.. Posted June 14 2009 at 5:21 PM.

Big Manchester United fan and a big Ronaldo fan, Ronnie thanks for your time at United and as much as i liked you as a player you will never go down as an Old Trafford all time great. Would love A United v Madrid Final next year with Rooney outshining Ronaldo, i actually think a lot of players are going to step out of the shadows next year and by not being so reliant on Ronaldo i think we will be better as a team, there is a lot of thinks there but i think it will happen hehe

By chris cope.. Posted June 14 2009 at 4:39 PM.

but has rooney had chance to be player of the year, as he has been pushed out of position to allow ronaldo to be more attacking player rather than a supplyer of the ball, rooney puts in a lot bigger work rate than ron ever did.

By chris. k.. Posted June 14 2009 at 4:16 PM.

If he has succeded in singlehandedly winning d champions cup 4 man u against barca, wud we b hearing all these thrash about him. He made use of his oportunity that is why he's d world footballer of the year and not rooney.

By Ogbis.. Posted June 14 2009 at 3:46 PM.

to pedro. you must have been watching a differant game as i could see rooney, berbatov and a few other players in better goal scoring positions than ronaldo, but he was being selfish as usual, he single handedly lost us that game by trying to beat messi and it backfired on him, cos he is not in the same league as messi.

By chris. k.. Posted June 14 2009 at 3:14 PM.

I have 2 agree with a lot of the comments posted.
Ron's 2007/08 season was phenomenal, but like all good things it came to and end the season gone, he seemed to have reverted back to the way he was when he 1st started playing for utd, thay attitude spoke volumes.
So as far as i'm concerned, good riddance, I will bet my bottom dollar (i'm from jersey by the way) that real wont win anything next year, even tho they have the 2 most expensive signings in the world
You can't gaurentee a team will gel by paying out megabucks.

By 1 to many strops.. Posted June 14 2009 at 3:06 PM.

Thanks for the 6 years Ronaldo,It was obvious you where not happy this season,With a couple of decent signings i think United will be a stronger team and other players will be better without Ronaldo.

By James, Workington.. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:38 PM.

"single-handedly beat Barcelona in the Champions League final" do you seriously understand football? From what i saw of the game he was the only player in that team trying to do anything! Yes hes ego sometimes makes him take things one step too far and lose the ball the ALOT of the time he pulls it off. Im a Liverpool fan myself but cant help but admire hes unbelievable talent, by far he is the most complete player in modern football i have seen. All i have to say is Ronaldo thank you for what you have brought to the premier league and best off luck to you at Real.

By Pedro.. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:34 PM.

Why does everyone think we're getting Ribery?? Man Utd have reportedly already bidded for him (an extremely high bid) which was rejected. Hence, we're getting Valencia as the replacement! Before everyone goes off thinking Valencia cannot do what Ronaldo does, i'm sure he cannot, but doesn't mean United still cant win games without Ronaldo. Valencia is a QUALITY player and will be a quality signing. I have my full backing behind him. Anderson will come good form next season aswell as we saw a few glimpses end of last season. Nani will be given a better chance to show his worth. Rooney will be played in his preferred best role and possibly Tevez might be signed. All in all, United have gone uphill from the departure of Ronaldo. And with Valencia signing say for about 20 million, we have about 60 million left in the kitty. Benzema is the number one target with Ribery that everyone wants. In my opinion, Benzema can be as good as Ronaldo. Preferably, i would prefer if Man Utd Bidded 30 million each for Sergio Aguero and Karim Benzema!

By Tony Montana.. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:02 PM.

ronaldo's gone and that's the end, what sir alex has to do now is find a good server of the ball from midfield and their back in buisness, let tevez go and bring in benzeme from lyon he will be unstopable with rooney with him.

By chris. k.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:34 PM.

My initial feelings of sadness have evaporated. Ronaldo is in the past and ManUtd will always be there, with my support. I can't wait to buy my next ManUtd no.7 jersey with someone else's name on it.
Go away, now, Ronaldo. Go to Spain, where ever. You are not wanted at the OT. Pack up or don't pack up & leave, now! Glory, Glory ManUtd!

By BobKoh.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:33 PM.

Its best to see Ronaldo go, he was now thinking he is bigger than the club noone is and noone will be. Its good news for he will shinne.

By Sayiman.. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:44 PM.

its a good deal to get £80m but SAF will prob waste the money and buy average players look at the buys he has done of late

£30m berbatov? why didnt he just sign tevez with that money??

£20.5m Nani was given the tag of being ‘the next Cristiano Ronaldo’. hasnt happened for him maybe he can step out of the shadow now Ronaldo has gone.

£24.5m Anderson he is no Paul Scholes sure we could of got better with £24m??

£17m Owen Hargreaves good player just spend to much time with the doctor.

so thats £88m spent by SAF IMO that is a waste. let hope he dose better with this £80m i dont hold high hope tho after been link to sign Antonio Valencia for £17m? i wont be suprised if we dont get one world class player from that money.

By Rosco.. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:05 PM.

Beckham,Best,Cantona,Charlton,Edwards,Giggs,Keane,Law,Busby and Ferguson ..... These are the names that have made United great. Rooney will surely write himself into that list too, but Ronaldo has never been nor will ever be good enough to clean their boots ! Alan Hansen was saying on MOTD how we will miss him as he decimates the smaller reams, but how many times did he REALLY perform inthe big games ? In any event United have lost Becks, Schmeichel, Cantona, Keano, Ruud, Jaap Stam in the last decade or so - and still won trophy after trophy ! No player is or ever will be bigger than United !

chris, man u fan....

beckham not in ronaldo`s class? beckham was the worlds most famous player... there was no bigger money spinner than him at the time.

Beckham was after more money and he wanted image rights...he/posh/family/agents were in the papers daily mouthing off... Tevez is another one that has burnt his bridges with Fergie.

He was sold to madrid. They done nothing football wise but made a load of money for teh real madrid company. Beckham was later sold, he made a load of money by signing for galaxy *an american pub team*....

Whats the betting ronaldo will back in manchester within 2 years, wearing a City shirt *manchester pub team*

Remember when Beckham left for madrid... all the "thats the end of united" comments.

Fergie quickly replaced him with a portugese nobody.. he claimed the new number 7 would be better than Beckham anyway. Turns out that he was right.

Sometimes players just get to big for their boots and think they are bigger than the club. Ronaldo has scored some important goals this season, but I felt embarresed by him mostly.. what a stroppy git he is. He will fit right in at madrid.

So do we see united as a feeder club?.... or Madrid as a gullible cash cow?

By bob malooga.. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:57 AM.

By mr hassaine.. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:02 AM.

ronaldo is a world class player , he is without doubt the best footballer in the world. Manchester united where not a big enough club to hold on to a player of Ronaldos class.
Manchester United or its fans might not like it but they where just a stepping stone that Ronaldo used to get where he has always wanted to be ..that is real madrid.
Manchester United have got to accept that they are not the club that every footballer want to play for and after their very poor performance in the champions league final when they where reduced to looking like a team of second rate players at best , i think Ronaldo had every right to be angry at his team mates and manager for their display and performance.
that is why he had to try ti win the game single handedly as his team mates fell woefullly short.

By mark.. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:00 AM.

To Jorge! Rooney is a lot better than ronaldo will ever be. Ronaldo is a one man show, without vision, that is why he will never be the worlds best ever again. Look at Messi, he's got vision. ronaldo has been fed by the utd-team throughout the last season. I'm not saying that ronaldo isn't a great player, but in terms of future prospect he rates below rooney. Rooney has heart, power and vision second to none. ronaldo has power and techniqe, but a poor vision.

I think Ronaldo is a fantastic player and he will be certainly be missed, but im sure UTD will strive on to more success without him. His heart is not with man u so he sould go..

By d wright.. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:29 AM.

Good riddance to bad Rubbish,Greedy and Ungreatfull Ronaldo. He will no longer achieved the FIFA best player anymore as a Madrid player because the Spanish player will not give him the limelight as what the MU players has done and support him to acieved the title in 2008. Its Messi year this year and in 2010 who knows its going to be MU player again.

ROONEY WHO?
ROONEY IS NOTHING ALL THE HATE THAT THE PRESS CREATED TROUGH THE WORLD IS LITERALLY BECAUSE OF THAT COMPARISON.
BUT THERE IS NO COMPARISON...
RONALDO IS A KING ROONEY IS A NOBODY.
IF RONALDO WAS ENGLISH THE MOVE WOULD BE CONSIDERED GREAT, LIKE BECKHAM.
BUT NOBODY WANTS ENGLISH PLAYERS. THEY CANT LEARN OTHER LANGUAGES THEY DONT EVOLVE, THE ONLY ONE WAS BECKHAM.
WHERE WAS THE LOYALTY TO TEVEZ,SMITH,SAHA?

By CARLOSANTOS.. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:13 AM.

With David Villa, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid i think they have a superb attack and midfield, they shud sign a world class defender aswell. Ronaldos loss at manu is huge to the club, he had a average but he was still one of manutd's top goalscorers and had many assists. 80 mil is a lot of money and manu shud buy benzema wid that and try to keep tevez. I dont think the manutd players actually dont like ronaldo thats probably a lie. Im a manutd fan and still support them but i think Real Madrid have a better team now if they get a world class defender.

By Cr7.. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:09 AM.

Do you really think that rooney is the replacement for Ronaldo? Dont make me laugh. Please do not compare the two. Ronaldo is much better. It does not matter about is personality. What matters is what he does on the pitch and you all know that man utd will be a weaker team without him. He had a bad season? he was still your best player. Regarding the dodgy penalties the referees will find another man utd player to award them.

By jorge.. Posted June 14 2009 at 6:08 AM.

I will take money on real madrid winning nothing next year with ronaldo and kaka. I live in texas and am fed up hearing about the arrogant petulance of ronaldo and his lack of class when it comes to dealing with things.Well done sir alex for getting rid of him.

NA NA NA NA... NA NA NA NA HEY HEY HEY GOODBYE
u don't know how long ive bein waitin for this sucka to leave. since when he first started at united he was a ball hog and would never work hard in games. i have told many that i don't like him and he should sit on the bench. people had told me that he may be like that now, but united will fix his game.. from what i see it.... it has gotten worse. fergie let him get used to the idea that he can get his own way. then thats when he started throwing tantrums. he is still a ball hog. still doesn't work hard. now thats he's gone we can go back to the way we used to play where our wingers actually crossed the ball and we had strong header in the middle. next year berba will score more goals because of this. rooney will score more. bottom line is we'll dod better without ronaldo

By jonte smith.. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:59 AM.

Ronaldo was a childish, selfish, brat that could only think about himself, since last summer!!! He was splitting the club in two. If you take away the spot kick goals (SAF- gave him) you would see a good season not the remarkable season. Because if SAF gave those kicks to someone else, then Ronaldo's head would not be so big!!! 80m pounds- best piece of business ever done in the history of football!!! Long live Manchester United- club first then players always!!!

By BHT and the Monsters.. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:50 AM.

Thanks for everything that he has been done at old trafford. No doubt he is fantastic but we want someone who have commitment to the club. Really tired to listen on his transfer speculation every summer so the best action is just let him go. Good Luck to him! For the rest who still loyal to the club. Keep focus on next season campaign..

IM A UTD FAN AND DELIGHTED HES GOIN.HIS ATTITUDE HAS BECOME DISGRACEFUL.DISRESPECTFUL TO OUR GREAT CLUB.80 MILLION FOR HIM IS FANTASTIC BUISNESS.HE IS WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND IN THE EYES OF MANY ITS MESSI WHO SHOULD BE INCLUDING MYSELF.GOIN TO REAL WITH ALL THEIR SUPERSTARS IS NOT A GOOD MOVE BUT ONE I WELCOME.MESSI WILL BE WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR NEXT YEAR AND RONALDO WILL STRUGGLE TO MAKE THE TOP THREE.IF ROONEY GOES BACK TO HIS FAVOURED POSITION BEHIND A FRONT MAN AND WE CAN MAKE 2 MAYBE THREE GOOD SIGNINGS TO FEED HIM WE WILL BE ALRIGHT.THANKS RONNIE,BUT GOODBYE...........

Sorry Mohid !! my comment was meant for Tiago

By rab1802.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:53 AM.

Mohid:- Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville, Chris Eagles, Darron Gibson, and many more...and u wanna chirp on that YOU produce gr8 young players? do me a favour u clown, Our car park takes more money from home games than ur stadium, produce 1, yes 1 world class player and u think u r it!, Portugal won't even qualify for the World cup at this rate...and Rooney is the top scorer in qualifying over ALL federations not only U.E.F.A......we thank Ronaldo for his contribution but his selfishness and lack of loyalty and team ethic WILL ensure that he is NEVER in the Manchester United 'LEGENDS' Club...unlike Giggs and Becks and Rooney....80m ! ! !cheers for the Dough Mr Perez!

By Rab1802.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:51 AM.

i always believed that rooney is our star man and we all knew that he was sacrifying lot of his talent while ronaldo denading a position, i want rooney to b our next super star as he always in our heart. he is very loyal to the club ,the boss and respect to the fans. he is honest about everything and he will remain in our club as long as he play football. come on rooney ur always my favourite and will remain so even if u dont play.

By mo.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:08 AM.

PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT RONALDO,HE HIS HISTORY NOW FOR MAN UTD LETS MOVE ON

By MOHID.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:13 AM.

mike charity case.....i think it was a bit of a charity case when we sold ronaldo to you when we could have sold him to real madrid in the first place....have you know most of teams ideas i.e how to raise a young talented football player comes from our academy.....carlos queiroz introduce it to man utd.....so if i where you i would think twice before you critise the team that sold you the best player man utd has had since cantona

By tiago.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:01 AM.

i agree with geoffrey i think that ronaldo gave us 6 wonderful years at united and i thank him very much, but i think that the time was rigt 2 cash in on ronaldo, £80m is alot and SAF can do alot with 2 help them team progress afta the defeat in the champo league final and make us come back even more stronger and reclaim the champo league title and take our 4th successive leaggue title to make it our 19th. Also the time was right cuz if ronaldo's heart aint at united them let him go cuz his attitude towards united was becomming disgraceful and no1 is bigger than the club, SAF showd that with beckham. I think like the article says with ronaldo going it allows rooney to shine as he was in ronaldo's shadow also especially the rest of the team were aswell. I like 2 say gud luck 2 ronaldo but i think that united will be better off without him and ferguson will make a replacment within no time like he has done many of times in the past and i honestly will think that ronaldo will regret moving as hes leaving the best team in the best league in the world.

By johal007.. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:00 AM.

Why would man utd pay sporting two transfer fees? What are they? A charity case?

By Mike.. Posted June 13 2009 at 11:50 PM.

I think we should all thank ronaldo for the service he gave UTD but at the end of the day no one is bigger than the club & i think it was the right time for him to go because i doubt with his heart being else where, we would have gone further with his services.

Good luck to him in RM

By Geoffrey.. Posted June 13 2009 at 11:55 PM.

Ronaldo is an alright player well atleast when he isn't being shot by snipers in the crowd, rolling on the floor, throwing childish tantrums and being a one man show wich isn't a very good show anywyas!
