TIGER WOODS believes his chances of beating Jack Nicklaus' Major record have considerably improved after the knee operation which kept him sidelined for eight months.

Woods, who is aiming to beat the Golden Bear's total of 18 Major wins, needed a FOURTH operation on his troublesome knee last year.

And with two tournament wins since his comeback earlier this year, Woods believes he can add his 15th Major win at this week's US Open at Bethpage.

Last year Woods produced a remarkable play-off victory over Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines while playing with a ruptured knee ligament.

And he revealed: "I probably wouldn't have had as good a chance to put myself in position to tie or pass Jack's record if I hadn't had the surgery.

"My leg was deteriorating over the past couple of years but now I'm healthy enough where I think I can give it a go.

"It has been a frustrating time for me. I won one tournament and had four more top 10s before winning the Memorial last week but people were saying: 'You know, you're not that good any more.'

"Hey, I had 18 straight top 10s in total. That's not bad! I'm pretty consistent. All I needed was a little bit of time so I could work on my game. Now I'm healthy and I'm able to start doing that."

Woods gained some extra motivation from pal Roger Federer equalling Pete Sampras' record of 14 tennis Grand Slams by landing his first French Open title in Paris last weekend.

Woods, 33, said: "Roger is truly remarkable when he gets it going. He just hits shots that nobody else can.

"It's fun to watch your friends go out there and play and compete. I get just as nervous doing that because they're my friends."
