MICHAEL OWEN FOR SALE

Newcastle striker sends clubs brochure about HIMSELF

Image Flag

MICHAEL OWEN has sent a glossy 34- page brochure about HIMSELF to eight Premier League clubs in a desperate attempt to find a new team for next season.

It is believed to be the first time in Premier League history that a player has produced his own prospectus to prompt a transfer.

The one-time golden boy of English football and former European Footballer of the Year has been reduced to hawking himself around after suffering the ignominy of relegation with Newcastle.

The brochure - circulated by Owen's management company Wasserman Media Group - has been sent to eight top-flight clubs, including Aston Villa, Everton, Portsmouth and West Ham.

In it, WMG boast about the benefits of signing the ex-England striker, his clean-cut image, commercial value and goalscoring prowess and include a medical report.

The brochure rivals any produced by top-end estate agents to advertise multi-million mansions.

Just imagine, folks - For Sale: A magnificent, luxury two-legged footballer, set on a picturesque plot in the North East of England.

Backs on to racecourse (at every opportunity). High maintenance, but must be seen to be appreciated. £80,000 per week, or nearest offer, subject to contract.

But WMG have dropped a brick in trying to allay fears about the 29-year-old's injury-prone record.

The sales details state Owen, who signed for Newcastle in a £16m move from Real Madrid four years ago, has appeared in 77 per cent of the Toon's games in the last two years.

But that's a bit of a sales clanger considering Mike Ashley's Magpies have suffered the shame of dropping out of the Premier League despite Owen's involvement.

Sam Rush, WMG's chief operating officer, explained the brochure, saying: "Although there's been interest from abroad, Michael told us he'd prefer to stay in the Prem.

"So after the season ended, we prepared a document showing all the information an interested club would require and this was circulated to a select group.

Mike Ashley
RELEGATED - Toon owner Mike Ashley

"We have provided a complete analysis of every Newcastle first-team game in the previous two years, knowing that Michael had appeared in 77 per cent of them.

"We also included a medical report and answers to frequently-asked questions, as well as a review of his commercial benefits and international name awareness.

"Our aim is to ensure Michael secures the most appropriate career move before the end of the transfer window."

Owen's current four-year £105,000-a-week Toon deal ends at the end of this month, so he would be available to any prospective buyer on a free. Everton, Villa, Tottenham and Manchester City are the leading contenders ready to offer Owen a fresh start.

But he has been dogged by hamstring and groin problems since he left Liverpool five years ago and has started just 58 league matches for Newcastle.

He was ruled out for five months after breaking his metatarsal in December 2005; then in June 2006 he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the World Cup and his knee was rebuilt by world-famous surgeon Dr Richard Steadman.

Horse-lover Owen makes no secret of the fact he wants to become a trainer and owner at his Cheshire stables when he hangs up his boots.

i am a newcastle supporter and owen has been playing bady recently with a poor goal scoring record.
let another team take a gamble on him but for 17 million we payed for him we feel he did us no favers and his goal scoring tells.
shearer wouldnt start him and i agree.
shearer will bet us back to the premierleague.

It' s sad to see how a brilliant player offers himself on premier league market. But injuries are huge problem even for great players. Not any of big4 clubs will buy him even if MO accepts reduced salary. No one wants to have a player who is able to play 10-15 games a season. If really he wants to play football, he's better accept 1 year offer from hull. It's a good place to show everyone he's still strong. And maybe he'll be back to england squad, play in South Africa and sign next year a contract with a big club. Good luck, Michael!!!

By Stan Russia. Posted June 21 2009 at 1:14 PM.

We can say what we want about M O, however it is the club that were willing to pay for his demand. wouldn't you have asked for more money when you change your job? then why are you making so much noise? His contract is ending, let the market decide how much he is worth, he is only one of eleven players, not including all the people from Ashley down. I thought Sir Bobby had built a momentum going forward but he was asked to leave and that was the start of the rot. N.Castle is still a very big club and it is time for the fans to support and the management to rethink, rebuild and regain the fans' support. It is only one year, that's all.

This "CV" of himself is really not doing much to sell himself, so what else could he sell? How about to sell hospital surgeon's work? He has enough experience to probably do the treatment himself, surely he would be a great spokesman for that (Just don't remind people he is a regular for recurrence of the same injury).

By Luke. Posted June 18 2009 at 7:03 AM.

How many of you jeordies think that NewCastle will ever be able to win a single match in the Championship....current group of player set for exit..or even if they do stay, or even without them and with the remaining current squad, what will New Castle do?

Where will they get suitable new players from? Tell you what....goodbye championship...welcome League 1 with a garland...

By Selo. Posted June 16 2009 at 5:18 AM.

i know the backroom backlash contributed massivley to the downturn of the toon. no amount of reshuffling will ever do a team any good.
however to have players playing who don't want to be there is a disgrace.
i would be honoured and give 100% if i was thrown a black and white jersey to put on. and i wouldn't have been so angered if a bunch of players who wanted to play for newcastle got relegated because i would know that they would have cared.

however i think the game at home against pompy sumarises owens downturn. if this player still has "excellent finishing" how come he failed to put away a one on one with David James (who was already on the floor). its a disgrace how these people are supposed to be the best of the best, get paid rediculous amounts, but culdnt be bothered whether they won or not.
football has been ruined by money and a revamp is in order!!

By rhys bennett. Posted June 15 2009 at 10:00 PM.

And where does Alan Shearer figure in all this?

Surely if he was in ANY WAY confident that Owen could recapture past form, then he'd be persuading him to stay at the club and regain promotion.

I conclude that Shearer knows he's no good any more - and that should be enough for anyone else not to touch him with a barge pole.

owen return liverpool please..

By gerrad... Posted June 15 2009 at 9:15 AM.

You cant blame Owen, wanting to leave the sinking ship. Towards the end of the season, I was fed up with reading about the biggest under achievers in the Premier league, who have not won anything for donkeys years, the best thing about Newcastle FC is their loyal fan base.

By roger foulser. Posted June 15 2009 at 8:19 AM.

As a Newcastle fan it's hard to say. Was Owen's love for the game swallowed up by our wheels of decline being already in full motion 3 years before he turned up? Or was the bumper fee and astronomical wages a marker for other average players to request the earth without having the ability to justify the wages they were/are paid.

The blame for me lies in every quarter. The Halls for selling to Ashley, Shepherd for running the club into huge debts and sanctioning silly transfer fees and wages with revenue NUFC couldn't earn, Allardyce and Souness for spending huge sums on dreadful players, the players who once here put less than minimal effort to get fit and perform for the club and finally the supporters who called for Robson's sacking at Villa Park all those years ago.

Now that we're in the second tier it is time for a fresh start across the board. A new owner, manager and players are required as is a change in the stands where the boos and cat calls after 3 defeats on the trot are replaced with the kind white hot atmosphere this club can generate. Forget about the past and look to the future.

By Andy. Posted June 14 2009 at 11:43 PM.

Apparently a heated bench (y'know, for subs to sit on) costs £37,500 to buy and a few grand to run - per season.

So.......

By Davey the Ditch. Posted June 14 2009 at 10:14 PM.

Michael Owen Who's he?
Ohhhhhhhhh just remembered the HAS BEEN footballer.
I hope my team in league2 don't put an offer in for him

By Mary. Posted June 14 2009 at 8:42 PM.

He said he was leaving my boys (Liverpool) because he wanted to win trophies......
That season he left we won the Champions League the next season we won the F.a Cup....
That says it all Mr Owen..
What have you won since you left LIVERPOOL..????
The highlight of your career since leaving Liverpool is being handed the No.10 shirt at Newcastle and the captains armband....
WE DONT WANT YOU BACK.....!!!!!!!!!

By Danny McCalla. Posted June 14 2009 at 8:17 PM.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit to find Owen being hailed the comeback kid after being transformed by Moyes, O'Neill or Redknapp. Amazing what a positive dressing room, motivational manager and supportive fans can do for a player who is used to a fractured dressing room, clueless managers and a crowd who cheer rather than jeer the team as he was used to with the bar codes. The best in Europe would have struggled at SJP last term. He should take the pay cut offered by Everton and thank them for saving his career.

By Steve Porter. Posted June 14 2009 at 8:24 PM.

Besides it's not Owen who is injury prone it's the barcodes. Look at their injury record over the years. If anyone can resurrect Owen it's Martin O'Neill. Owen is a great striker who hasn't had the service at the barcodes. Villa certainly have the service for him to start banging them in again.

By Lawrence. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:49 PM.

Only the top 8 good enough for you Owen? Wigan, blackburn, bolton and burnley near your home but not good enough? You wouldnt get into burnleys side and i'm a Rovers fan.Noel Gallager was right about you.

By Ian. Posted June 14 2009 at 5:56 PM.

Cristiano Ronaldo is going to be the next Michael Owen, leave a great premiership team to go real madrid he will be back just like owen crying and handing out flyers with a c,v hopeing norwich will offer him a pay as you play deal or mabe the groundsman job at yoevil

By James Bungay. Posted June 14 2009 at 5:39 PM.

Price On Application: I'll give him a banana & a bowl of corn flakes a week to play in my local team.

By Andy O'Leary. Posted June 14 2009 at 4:53 PM.

my message to owen is retire now and don't send ur brochure to spurs or I'm off lol

By nathan lee. Posted June 14 2009 at 4:02 PM.

this guy is a big joke. thats about all i can say. if people are complaining about paying 200k a week for ronaldo, i think paying 80k a week for owen is worse. for a guy who spends more than half his time on the treatment table, he is a rip-off. i rank him right up there as probably the worst signing for newcastle! any sensible manager who wants to sign him now should offer a MAXIMUM wage of 30k in my opinion, if not, settle for ANY youngster with potential!

By yin-rong. Posted June 14 2009 at 3:28 PM.

you can't blame any player for collecting the wages on offer...its the club who draw up the contracts? owen was well within his rights to pick up his wages....surely it was clear he was injury prone prior to the signing? why would he stay in the fizzy pop league ? owen didn't get newcastle relegated...there are dozens of offenders higher up the list than him !
the fact the fans are craving a manager who is untrained, unqualified, unexperienced and was shocking on his brief spell at the end of the season goes to show what little the toon army know about football !!!! messiah...hahaha!

By peter lee. Posted June 14 2009 at 3:12 PM.

Truth is that Owen has become a total joke along with the rest of the Magpies. It would not surprise me if none of their players got an offer from a Premier League club which is undoubtedly why so many say they will be happy to stay and keep picking up those fat salaries for doing nothing.

By M. Sebastian T.. Posted June 14 2009 at 3:11 PM.

i hope he ends up at westham he would be good with cole or ashden up front come to london start again we will show you good football

By oak. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:43 PM.

Any club signing him is mental. Well past it. France 98 was so very long ago. Hey - but at least he is still clean cut! How many points does that earn you in a season?

By Dog. Posted June 14 2009 at 2:16 PM.

We would be interested in signing Michael even though he was relegated with his current club. We play once a week on a Saturday in the local Bournemouth league. For a small signing-on fee (£5) Michael can expect a friendly welcome from the team. Subs are £5 per match. We supply water and oranges at half-time and we also have a fully equipped first-aid kit with the required "magic sponge". Michael would be expected to help put up the nets and clear any debris from the pitch before the game. Post match he can look forward to a lukewarm shower at our nearly state-of-the-art clubhouse. We look forward to receiving his call.

By Markieboy. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:41 PM.

"Form is temporary but class is permenent"
Oh yeah? And how temporary is being injury-prone?

The worst part of this saga is the fact that he's shown no regret at the outcome of our sorry season. 48,000 every week for 5 home wins in total. Yup, we're all fickle and deluded!

Our fans never got on his back for his injury - or FORM - record, and have paid handsomely for his services, yet that bond between player and fans was never there.

But helping us into the Championship cannot, surely, have helped his chances of getting one final mega-£££ contract.

By Billy Ellwood. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:45 PM.

If there is a premierhship manager who takes this has been on then I will be surprised, especially at his demands of £60 K- £80k per week. The guy took Newcastle for £45 million, who are the fools in all of this?

Njau made a good post, this guy has been completely shot for the last 5 years relying on tap in goals, to justify himself as a "goal scorer", while adding nothing to the team. If he has a bad game he complains about the lack of service he is getting, when really its because he is physically shot and cannot integrate himself into any of the team plays.

In future Newcastle should stop their transfer policy of signing "big names" on the way down because it has got them relegated. If the £45 million wasted on Owen alone had been spent wisely, they would still be in the premiership today. Viduka is another case in point.

By Ben. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:44 PM.

Hardly an inspirational front cover - being treated for an injury in an England shirt and obviously missing a goal opportunity for Newcastle -just about sums up his last few years in football.

By Stevie B. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:20 PM.

good riddence to him the money he got from the toon he should be ashamed of himself hope nobody wants him he can always do a bit of advertising on tv to keep his horses fed

By jacqui. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:13 PM.

Greedy? Ok maybe his wages were excessive but the fact is, Newcastle were willing to pay them PLUS a hefty transfer fee, with St James' park packed to the rafters to welcome him. When times are bad, people complain and had owen scored to keep Newcastle up, the tune from the fans would be to sign hium up, whatever the cost, thus is the fickle nature of football fans.
As for being a has been, he needs time after his injuries to recapture form, like any other player. Henry at Barca is an example, but now injury free he is back to his old form.
The fact of the matter is, he saw out his contract and thus has no obligation to continue to or even want to play for a club that is now beneath his level of ability and though it may seem desperate that he has produced this 'flyer' advertising himself, at least it shows his desire to play football at the top level.

By Alex Slater. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:21 PM.

the fact of the matter is owen was used too much for the red scum was forced back quick and lost 2 yards of pace goin back 10 yrs. i'm a bluenose and admit he was once a great finisher with pace bu7t so was dixie dean in the past. we got saha for nothing and he said to us if i'm not fit i don't get paid now has owen done that and has hed done anything for the barcodes. jumping out of a plane without a parachute is a gamble and so is the wlsh wizard owen, & the wages he gets. but to be honest newcastle are a city with 1 team who pay over the odds and pay the wages to attract players look at very average players they've had with the wages they've paid. owen captain what a joke and newcastle never had 1 leader in their squad they al failled great geordie fans who spent their hartd earned notes loyally to see their team. the only studds owen should see now are at his stables or in his head he's a disgrace. how can a managment company put a glossery together of some1 who is constanly injured and has just gone down like the titanic its hierious as a blue. everton don't need owen please don't take a gamble on him. ruud van is being touted aparently for 1.25m who would u rather have for a gamble?

By robert sorenson. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:21 PM.

i agree with john murphy. if micael owen has any decency, pride and scruples about him, he would stay at newcastle on vastly reduced wages and do everything in his power to help them back into the prem at the first time of asking. sadly, i fear no chance of this happening, and a once great club with fantastic support has now, sadly, become a laughing stock. come on michael, do the decent thing and help a club which has given you so much. it's time to give something back.

By wisey (not dennis). Posted June 14 2009 at 12:34 PM.

Disgrace? Why would you care about Newcastle once they have been relegated? At the end of the day the only person you can truely rely on is youself and he is an established Premier League player. I personally would get straight away from that club if i was part of it that got relegated, every english player wants to play in the best league in the world, and the best league in the world is not the Championship. He's not being greedy, he just wants to be part of a Premiership club like every other top englishman. Form is temporary but class is permanent.

By Josh. Posted June 14 2009 at 11:47 AM.

have said for years this lousy little parisite should never have been signed, possible ,someone at the signing stage must have had a vested interestto bring this waste of space in, he made it clear he didnt want newcastle

By richard cole. Posted June 14 2009 at 11:53 AM.

He should now be known not as Mickey Owen but as Mickey Mouse and take his show on the road to DisneyWorld. Seems to me he's living in a fantasy land inside his "Owen" head to think some other team in the Prem will pay the idiotic wages that he seems to think he deserves.

I've never yet seen a flashy brochure printed to advertise an old clunker of a used car. What kinda warranty will his agency offer should he break down (which we all know he will).

The man has no shame, no loyalty, no committment other than to himself. Washed up little Git.

By Kenneth Straw. Posted June 14 2009 at 12:00 PM.

Has been, greedy little runt. Any club would be stupid to buy him but then again Joey Barton will also play PL footie next year so it just goes to show the clubs are as greedy as the players themselves. No Loyalty in today's game.

By Jimmy B. Posted June 14 2009 at 11:20 AM.

If you're Michael Owen and looking for a new club, presumably the reason you had a brochure printed was to encourage Managers to think you still had something to offer and to dispel the beliefs that
1)You used to score a lot of goals for Liverpool when you were much younger 2)You now get injured ....often! 3)The only honours you have won in the last 5 years involve wearing a top hat to collect them 4)You haven’t played much for Newcastle and when you do you miss plenty of sitters
The choice of photos on the cover of his brochure says it all!
Speaking as someone who has worked in Marketing for 30 years, its very sad to see a communication that backfires quite so badly, for who seems a decent bloke (but crocked footballer).

Sad!

Martin

By Martin. Posted June 14 2009 at 11:18 AM.

DISGRACE. he didn't even care when newcastle went down, i hope he ends up at burnley.

By scott. Posted June 14 2009 at 11:07 AM.

I think he has got plenty of cheek..He and most of the lazy, greedy players got Newcastle relegated...bit much that he has to send a brochure out...Don't know what he could put in it..been missing for the last few seasons..even when he was playing..As for the comment about the fans getting rid of Allardyce....I think Ashley has to hold his hands up to that one..Truth be known he did'nt like the guy.As for Alan Shearer...I think he deserves a chance to bring us back up...Ashley approached him to try to keep us up..but with greedy, lazy, unfit players we had he was in a no win situation. When you think what A shley was paying Dennis Wise to bring in players that have never played..makes you wonder what sort of business man he is.The players took us down, they should show a bit of loyalty, take a pay cut and try to get us back up.I paid £500.00 for a season ticket last year and certainly got no value for money what so ever.

By amy. Posted June 14 2009 at 10:35 AM.

I cannot believe how deluded the majority of Newcastle fans are. All this fuss to install Shearer as manager and why?. This is the great Alan Shearer who managed only 4 points from a possible 24.

Ashley may have made some mistakes, but he ain't that silly to appoint Shearer as manager and rightly so.

By bernie the bolt. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:22 AM.

i remember fernando morientes signing for liverpool on relativly low wages but with a huge bonus for every goal and game he played.
i reckon this is the only way that Owen is gonna get a contract. no sensible club will touch him otherwise. he's a has been. i for one am still laughing at his move to madrid so he could win a champions league medal, what happened a few months after that?? king rafa and sir stevie lifted it and owen couldnt buy a starting place in his new "super team". the grass isnt always greener on the other side.

Micheal Owen is a greedy, money grabbing looser. i hope he gets what he deserves.

By red. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:44 AM.

Let's be clear. We owe nothing to Allardyce. That puffed-up fool saddled us with some truly awful players who have caused us to be relegated while drawing huge salaries.

Geremi, Smith, Cacapa, Rozenhal, and the ultimate act of idiocy, Joey Barton. He also spent a fortune on staff and other unneccessary changes at the club.

He was sacked hastily, true, but it was surely just bringing the inevitable forward a few months. His arrogance was causing problems at the club.

By Tim Harvey. Posted June 14 2009 at 9:44 AM.

Still think Owen will get goals if he plays for a club that plays better than Newcastle did. But he has a very questionable attitude most of the time that is different to his public image. He treated Liverpool with contempt from a very early age saying he was only there until a big European move came along. Fell out with Robbie Fowler because he was jealous that Robbie was a better finisher. Fabio Cappelo obviously saw something he didn’t like at Real even though Owen was scoring for them. And not once had he apologised for the mess a NUFC of which he was a part of, never mind being at the races instead of training to save the club he was at.
Still have a funny feeling that he may end up back at Liverpool. After all Torres needs someone to clean his boots, and the way Liverpool play, Owen will be back amongst the goals without having to do too much work which will suite him.

By austro. Posted June 14 2009 at 8:49 AM.

Njau, Dixie Dean is one of the greatest strikers ever. He holds the record for the most goals scored in a league season.

He scored a record breaking 60 league goals for Everton in the 1927/28 season.

He also notched up 37 hattricks in his career.

By Richard. Posted June 14 2009 at 7:21 AM.

Blame the Liverpool fan in me but all you Geordies cursing now made Newcastle Hell on that day to welcome the Golden boy. Your Rot started with that game in Villa where Sir Bobby Left your ver inferior "god" and got the boot, whose cycle went went full cycle at... Villa, where Gullit got it too. Poetic justice that. Well Point is I'll have My money for Owen to be in the World cup as you recieve your last Parachute payment and SJP is auctioned

By Njau. Posted June 14 2009 at 6:46 AM.

Who on earth is Dixie??
Anyway back on topic.. my how the mighty have fallen. Owen was once the 2nd most sought after striker in the world after Ronaldo post France '98 with a 50 million price tag.. to this, its incredible. After that World Cup, he scored a hat trick at Newcastle and ran from the half way line taking it past 3 before scoring..and Andy Gray in commentary stood up and applauded and said..."i've not seen the likes of this young man in my life"
As a United fan, the man MOST culpable for Owens decline is Houllier...he overplayed Owen when his body was still growing and developing (rather than protect him as Fergie did with Giggs at same age) and Owen then incurred a series of hamstring injuries... the real killer being April 1999 at Leeds when he pulled up in agony and fell to the ground... he was out for 5 months and the damage/weakness had been inflicted. Owen while being a fantastic goalscorer was never the same player post Elland road.. that lightening burst to breeze past defenders was gone so he became much more one dimensional.
Owen has 3 stages...
1997-1999 - borderline Superstar
1999-2004 - no longer blistering pace but excellent finisher
2004-2009 - gradual decline, physically shot

By jeff. Posted June 14 2009 at 4:50 AM.

It' not the players that you should blame Toon Army but the joker that is your club owner. 3 managers in the space of months disrupted training patterns as each manager coaches differently. I remember when Owens contract was up a couple of years ago that Newcastle supporters 'begged' him not to leave. I think Smith was a bigger flop!!

Yes, Gemmill 0 that's why you are in Div 2 next year and Div 3 the year after

By Keith Price. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:03 AM.

In the past, I kind of defended Owen. He was the wrong signing at a bucket club - and I'm a long-time season ticket holder. He has had to put up with rubbish management, but he hasn't suffered as nuch as the fans. And he has been well paid for it. He is still getting paid by NUFC yet, even as club captain, he has not once said "I'm soory we have gone down". And that has lead to over a hundred redundancies. He is a disgrace. He could give up a month's salary (June), when he hasn't played (although he's done nothing in ages) and give that money, almost £500k to help out those who lost their jobs. Please, any club, do not employ this charlatan. He is a vile "man".

wake up,wake up ,give yourself a shake up,do you seriously think hotshot martins will hang around to play in the fizzy pop league 09-10 i don't think so.prolific? exactly how many did he put in the onion bag last year, though compared to the rest in the team he could be likened to dixie dean

As a toon fan this does not surprise me. You can add the following sentence in to the brochure "known to many as a spineless little slime ball who will take fans hard earned cash to fund his lavish lifestyle and turn in gutless performances." He is a joke, an absolute joke and no one in the top four will touch him. He is a spent force, injury prone, dishonest. He is not worth 50p a week never mind £50k. Good luck Mighty Micky Owen you will need it - a complete div!

Days before we played the Boro he was pictured at chester races whilst the rest of our players trained and prepaired for one of the clubs most important games in recent times !!!!! if he had any balls about him he would take a pay drop and sign up to play ,keep fit, with max effort to bring newcastle back up thus showing the football world that he is what he percieves to be !!!
