DAVID BENTLEY SET FOR VILLA PARK

Midfielder endures tough season at Tottenham

David Bentley
MOVING ON - David Bentley

DAVID BENTLEY is poised to end his horror spell at White Hart Lane by signing for Aston Villa on July 1.

The former Blackburn midfielder has endured a tough season at Tottenham, making just 20 league starts.

He scored only one goal, the memorable lob-volley against Arsenal at the Emirates that contributed to a 4-4 draw.

The 24-year-old has fallen out of favour with Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, who has been keen to cash in on the seven-cap England international.

Redknapp is keen to raise funds for his own summer spending spree as he attempts to turn Spurs into a top-six outfit.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill was chasing former Gunners trainee Bentley last summer.

He has acted quickly this time around to bolster his midfield following the departure of Gareth Barry to Manchester City.

The final fee is expected to be little more than half the £15million Spurs paid for Bentley last season so Redknapp may have to sell again to afford his summer targets.

actually mr wan king, the reason that villa fans have turned against barry is that he said all along that he only wanted to leave villa to play in the champions league - and most supporters could accept that. the fact is though that he left for a club who wont even be in the uefa/europa league next season but will get twice the money that he would have got by staying at villa (a deal was offered to him that would have made him the highest paid player in the clubs history). barry sold his ambitions for money when he signed for city.

WOW! Villa fans caling Barry Judas after how many? 11/12 years of service? Not very human of you really is it. Probably the best player any of you have seen there for years and that's how you thank him! Hardly reasonable to expect a player to spend his whole career at the same club these days is it? Especially a 2nd rate one.

I'm pretty sure that £15m quoted in this article is what the price would have been with all the whistle and bell addons that never came to fruition for Blackburn, I'd think it was no more than about £12m, in which case the fee will be a lot more than half, won't it!

It's July 1st because that's when the window opens and he lays for an English club. In fact all signings in England only become official (rubber stamped by the FA) on July 1st I think.

I hope he exchanges jj and bently for ash young :D

i thought harry redknapp gets the best out of washed out players...?

Did I just read that Villa are making (ha-ha) another assault on the top four next season. It is even more of a joke that MON is looking to achieve this with a collection of Spurs and Newcastle cast-offs. I hope that Spurs insist on a generous sell-on clause, snigger-snigger.

I will be glad to see the back of Bentley my old gran can run faster and he may aspire to be a beckham like player, it ain't gonna happen. We paid too much for an overrated player. Jenas is a top class player who I think Harry can make more consistent.

Why and we trying to replace our 'best' players which second rate players from second rate clubs. Bentley is not what we need and it would be a backwards step. Come on MON actually look for quality players. Benoit Cheryou is perhaps the kind of player to replace Barry not Bentley

Another backward step by spurs selling players to our rival like last year .Will mean another three points lost or maybe six .Get real levey and give signings a chance one season is not enough to judge a player .Aston villa will have good english players and we will have all mercenarys.

I think Rich Clark is right. I think Milner will fit in really well in the centre. He is a workhorse, he may not have the pace, but he can run and run for 90 mins. Hes a very good player. Jenas and Bentley will be good signings, however Ashley Young has to stay if Villa are looking to break into the top 4. We can get rid of the best talent we have for two below average players. Tottenham are having dilusions of grandure. They want to break into the top 4, but have shown no signs last season that they are challenging for Europa League. My opinion to Redknapp is to build his squad, then 2 years time try and compete for Europa League, then after a few year there, try and compete for top 4. My Prediction, Villa 7th behind Man City and Everton, and Tottenham 11th.

You can have JJ And Bentley just make sure we have Ashley Young in return :) btw Bentley might suit Villa better then us as you have a few target men and he might actually remember how to cross now he is leaving us.

By Rated 25 THFC. Posted June 14 2009 at 1:32 AM.

milners no winger anyway mate, he cant cross, he struggles to beat his man, he doesnt have half the pace of gabby or ash young, so bentley, as a winger, is a better player, i can see milner filling the void left by judas to be honest

By Rich Clark. Posted June 13 2009 at 11:49 PM.

Is it to do with paying wages from the start of pre season training in July and not before ?

By jayne. Posted June 13 2009 at 11:46 PM.

Be a good signing but why july 1st ?

Also i cant see how he will fit in when we have James Milner unless martin has plans for playing milner in a new position for next season
