MICHAEL OWEN will have to take a staggering £70,000-a-week pay cut if he wants to resurrect his career at Aston Villa.

The out-of-contract striker was picking up £120,000 a week at Newcastle. But Villa boss Martin O'Neill has made it clear he is not prepared to smash the Club's pay structure.

Villa chairman Randy Lerner has already made contact with Owen's representatives and the 29-year-old believes that teaming up with O'Neill could help him rediscover his form and force his way into the England squad.

Everton are also interested but sources close to Owen say the ex-Liverpool striker is wary of the move.

His hopes of returning to Liverpool have been dashed after Kop boss Rafa Benitez shunned a last-ditch plea to take him back to Anfield.

Spurs are also monitoring the situation.

With Agbonlahor already on the books, why would Aston Villa want a similar type of player like Owen?
Villa have lots of power and pace up front with Heskey, Harewood and Carew, and wingers Milner and Young. Agbonlahor can play either on the wing or up front. I don't see the need for Owen even if Villa sell one of their target strikers.

owen shouldnt leave liverpool.but, wthout him,the reds won the champions league the next year ryt?so,do the reds need him?i dont think so.he left 4 madrid's money,n clearly pocketed more than enuf at newcastle.eh?he was at newcastle?sorry mate!cant say dat i notice you playing.owen dearie, why dont u cme n play here in malaysia?semi-retirement maybe?HAHAHAHAHA

By sid.. Posted June 8 2009 at 8:54 AM.

Michael Owen should never have left Liverpool for Real Madrid! But he did and so he has to live with that decision. Now it is only right he return to the best team in England-LIVERPOOL FC.The only place where he is totally appreciated for the great footballer that he is!

By carolc.. Posted June 8 2009 at 4:41 AM.

now that owen is out of contract maybe newcastle should pay a £15m transfer fee and pay 130k a week wages to another asbeen messiah who is only interested in his own publicity and playing for England. i know why don't they sign david beckham!

By tomdoyle.. Posted June 8 2009 at 12:03 AM.

to dec (posted at 3.12) NUFC will be above villa in two years - you realise of course that owen will then be 31? he isnt very fast now so how will he cope then? providing he plays more than 1 or 2 games through injury AGAIN. enjoy champ footy, it may soon be lg 1 when all your players leave. remember, no one like poor losers, your no better than west brom and borough.

By platt.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:28 PM.

Mug (Entry at 3.09pm)!! Clearly, this entry is a classic case of Mug by name Mug by nature. NUFC are not a Big club by any stretch of anyones imagination. I think even J K Rowling would struggle with her imagination to write any acheivements made by the North East side over there history. I do concede that AVFC have not won anything considerable for nearly 30 years (By considerable I refer to a european accolade) but no matter how distant there is a history that has been developed that will stay with the club forever. (Infact only Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Notts Forest have achieved more. If I have missed anyone else off i apologise, I do not have a football encyclopedia infront of me) NUFC are now gradually losing their `potentially big clubs` reputation and now lie beneath Sunderland in the North East rankings. Please, Mug, do not write utter garbage on the forum. if you have nothing factual to back up your big club claim then it is because it is nonsense and only Geordies will agree with you. The country is much bigger than who and what lies in Newcastle. Enjoy championship football where you will face Notts Forest, who in there history have achieved more than you will ever achieve. A large stadium with large fan base is not a big club it only thinks it is.

Anyway, Owen will do a job given time in the squad with creativity around it such as Young and Milner. i would welcome him with open arms!!

By Jimmymyt.. Posted June 7 2009 at 6:45 PM.

I think owen would be good singing for villa because he is a big names player and he has planty of experince for his former clubs.
plus he would give the youngsters a run for their money cus they know they are going to even harder to get their 1st team place.

By weeman.. Posted June 7 2009 at 6:36 PM.

As a season ticket holder at Villa Park, I would welcome him to the club, He knows deep down no club will pay him the same wages as Newcastle did and i think what a lot of fans are concerned about his injury problems.

We can offer him first team football, he has a lot of experience which is a priceless thing to have in a changing room. Owen will not go to Everton because of his links to Liverpool. Heskey on the books at Villa is another plus, I say £50,000 a week on a 1 or 2 year contract is the best deal for both clubs.

Welcome to Villa Park Mr Owen.

Would only have Owen on a performance
related contract, but could be a good move, trust in M'ON, as they say. As for Mug at 3.09, presuming your a Mag, look where you are pal, in the fizzy Pop League, I've seen a Villa team win the European Cup !

By Rotterdam 82.. Posted June 7 2009 at 5:41 PM.

I think Michael Owens should stay at Nufc and repay them by trying to play a few full games and maybe help them get back up to the premiership. He still recieved his huge wages with NUFC but did not play very often, its about time he gave something back. As for playing for England Owens should not play again until he can prove himself for the team he is with. I also agree that whatever club he is with it he should be paid by the games he actually plays

By Anne.. Posted June 7 2009 at 5:32 PM.

I'd love to see Owen at Villa, being a Villa fan myself.

He's an amazing striker, with unbelievable talent, just that he's was knocked off his perch at Real Madrid and now Newcastle have mad him worse. Martin O'Neill is the perfect man to get him back to top form, and playing alongside Agbonlahor will help him with his pace.

If he joins Villa he will be scoring goals just like he did at Liverpool, and before you know it will be in contention for an England call up.

PLEASE JOIN US OWEN, UP THE VILLA AND OWEN!!!!

By Chris Barnes.. Posted June 7 2009 at 5:23 PM.

why on earth did newcastle pay 16million for owen in the first place. it was obvious that he was well past his best and i find it a disgrace that he bailed out of liverpool when rafa came in and now he expects rafa to be interrested in buying him. what a joke

By richard eland.. Posted June 7 2009 at 4:41 PM.

At least half of the Premier League should be interested in signing Owen if he agrees to a performance related contract.

By Tommy.. Posted June 7 2009 at 3:50 PM.

Michael Owen is a spent force. I am amazed that NUFC have been milked £120k per week by as useless a player as him. DO NOT TOUCH HIM WITH A BARGE POLE! His knee injury is worse than he's letting on.

By NDLOVU.. Posted June 7 2009 at 3:49 PM.

everyone said beckham was dead and buried, admittedly he was not as injury prone. but he went to a better club rather than an american team that would struggle in league1, similiar to newcastle i suppose.
if owen could keep himself fit and join a decent side, with a good manager. ie: redknapp of spurs, o'neil of villa or maybe hodgson for fulham he would be as good as any striker in the prem. he needs to put a string games together and build his confidence up.
as for england thats a million miles away at present. as capello says he would not consider any players who do not play regular for there team. then again gary neville..........say no more!!!!
i would rather have a fit owen playing for england rather than crouch or carlton cole on the bench!
as for the money, i am sure if some silly chairman wants to pay me 120k a week then i would accept like any other normal human being.........

By lee james.. Posted June 7 2009 at 3:41 PM.

Owen should stay at NC for next season
that way he will repay back all the faith they showed in him,get his form back to where it was.
May-be and help NC back up to prem.
He's not good enough for England,
at this point in time maybe never will-be again,it's called old father time.but that's life im affraid
£50,000 a week----well ?

By Dec.. Posted June 7 2009 at 3:21 PM.

If he leaves NUFC he won't go to a smaller club with no ambtion like Villa who've not come close to winning anything for over a decade!

Stay where u are Michael. NUFC will be back above Villa within 2 years!

By Mug.. Posted June 7 2009 at 3:09 PM.

owen was finished the day he left liverpool for madrid. His confidence was shattered there and he has never regained it and looks like he never will.

By johnny b .. Posted June 7 2009 at 2:46 PM.

By johnny b .. Posted June 7 2009 at 2:43 PM.

what a shame only on £50.000 a week then

By frankly.. Posted June 7 2009 at 1:53 PM.

Michael Owen should be given a break, he's not a mass murderer. Put him in a good team with service and he will deliver. The rubbish Newcastle team last season, Rooney or Ronaldo would have struggled!

By Jeanettecheshire.. Posted June 7 2009 at 1:30 PM.

i think owen should stay where he is demand his full wage and hopefully take newcastle to league 1

By Tomo.. Posted June 7 2009 at 1:03 PM.

pooe owen his career is going down the pan he left liverpool went to madried then did not get first team play then lowly n/castle sighned him which he did not want to play for was holding out for possible man u or for liverpool to take him back then at the last minute sighned for n/castle so he could get in to the world cup poor guy it has not worked out for him liverpool have moved on big time he should stay at n/castle and try and get them back in the p/ship and repay them for all the time and money they have invested in him i am not a n/castle fan but owen has taken and given nothing back in return the least he can do is take a massive pay cut and try and get them back up as i feel he owes them playing in the top flight is not everything there is such thing as loyalty

By jade.. Posted June 7 2009 at 12:56 PM.

i think mon should look elsewere for a striker owen is dead wood

By shay connolly.. Posted June 7 2009 at 12:45 PM.

Anybody thinking of signing Owen should do it on a "Pay per Play" basis, the guy is just carrying to much history over recent years with reference to injuries. Owen will not help push the Villa towards that 4th Spot. We need defenders and midfield players. We have already have one reject from Newcastle, Milner who has no pace, can not cross a ball, brings nothing to the team and cost us 12 million. It's time MON took a close look at some of his recent signings and question what he is trying to achieve for the club.

By Relayer.. Posted June 7 2009 at 12:01 PM.

Owen is sooooo washed-up, he's rubbish now. He needs to be put out to pasture with his horses!!

By CAM.. Posted June 7 2009 at 11:09 AM.

yeh I agree that Owen should take that pay cut and stay at Newcastle to help them back up and pay them back. BUT if he does goto Villa it could be a good move. MON could get him back to a good scorer again but would his pride swallow the big paycut .....I doubt it..if he does take that pay cut in the interests of getting himself back to best and to be available for England...respect I suppose is due.

By richard.. Posted June 7 2009 at 11:20 AM.

normally would advise players with such poor form to walk away but in Owens case probably wouldn't reach end of the road without picking up another injury......

By Gerry Keegan.. Posted June 7 2009 at 11:02 AM.

I think Owen or Martins would be a good signing for Villa. MON has a great success of giving players confidence and getting the best out of them. Could be a good move for him... if he wants to be playing for England again he cant be playing in the Championship but depends on whether he shows the toon any loyalty..

By Gaz Villa.. Posted June 7 2009 at 11:03 AM.

As a Villa fan, why do we seem to buy second rated strikers?

By Thomas Lawrence.. Posted June 7 2009 at 10:13 AM.

This certainly gave me a laugh!!...as a season ticket holder at ST JAMES...i can honestly say Owen is so bad now...he would not score goals in the championship!!.....i respect villa a lot, but it would be a step backwards if they sign Owen

By jack arnold.. Posted June 7 2009 at 10:01 AM.

I think Owen should repay the Newcastle fans for their loyalty and timer spent injured by donating his last 6 months wages to a childrens charity then stay at Newcastle for another year on a reduced salary to at least get some respect back. A few other toon players should also do the same. We don't demand success, we know the clubs limits but we do demand passion and effort

By Steven.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:51 AM.

Michael is still one of the best goalscorers in the country, he just needs confidence and to be playing with good players. Villa is not a good move they will go backwards next season, Everton is just a no no because of liverpool past. Newcastle he needs to be away from there. We all know michael wants to be at anfield, but will rafa take the gamble? With not much cash to spend you never know! And Gerrard is bending his arm.

By Craig Nichols.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:47 AM.

Probably one of the best players England have ever had, capello WILL call him up. I am certain Michael Owen will do whats best for Michael Owen and if that means joining Spurs = FANTASTIC

By colin.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:30 AM.

In his present vein of form 70gs a week he should jump at. I would pay £70 quid on the return he gave newcastle. Should now stick to selling property in Dubai.

By bobthebaggie.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:30 AM.

You guys weren't complaining when Newcastle signed him up. How fickle are you? It is not his fault he gets injured so easily. Give the guy a break. If I was him I would want to leave Newcastle as well.

By Tally.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:18 AM.

The day Owen Shocked me was at the begining of 2006 he became injured but all of a sudden he was on the plane toward Germany, he knew he wasnt fit, but went along, goy injured against Sweden and was out for another 6 months, then had the guts to blame Sven Goran Ericksson for taking him along.

By Ola Ray.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:19 AM.

there was that one season Owen played 2 games for Newcastle through injury, but since then he's played 2/3 of the games. Admittedly that's not perfect but its a free transfer and we can afford 50k a week. For a player of his quality, When fit he will score for fun in our team. It's risky but could turn out to be one of the best transfer deals ever.

By mark.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:08 AM.

Owen,
If you are human enough, my suggestion is:

"Stay with Newcastle with a token wages of $1 a year".
This is the only way for you to repay the club who has stood by you through thick and thin, especially when you were injured. If I were you, I will not forgive myself if I abandon Newcastle at this stage. In life, money is not everything, sometimes it's the GRATITUDE that matters most.

Persevere, you can still perform at Championship level, Capello still keeps his radar on you.

By YNWA.. Posted June 7 2009 at 5:07 AM.

He gets a lot of injurys so yeh he should be prepeard to drop his salery

£60 Grand a week villa should offer him no more than that cause he will probably be in for a month out for a month

By Dan.. Posted June 7 2009 at 4:55 AM.

Owen is finished he is just a greedy parasite with no loyalty if he wants to boost his career again at villa and if he says it isn't the money then offer him a grand a week then see where his morals are.

By mal l.. Posted June 7 2009 at 3:11 AM.

i do agree he shouldnt walk away from Newcastle, he owes them that much....

But i would love to see him at Villa

By AaronVilla.. Posted June 7 2009 at 2:42 AM.

Michael Owen is past it. He would play 1 maybe 2 games, get an injury and be out for the rest of the season. £50,000 a week to make 2 appearances and be sat on his arse for 36 weeks.

MON & Randy.... if you want to waste that much money spend it on something worthwhile.

Even better... don't sign Michael Owen just put that 50k a week into a jar and use the 1.5Million you'd save in wages to spend on someone else.

By Stevieblueyez.. Posted June 7 2009 at 12:12 AM.

He stalled on his contract making all the right noises, and then wlked out on us for Madrid. The boy has no loyalty and is reaping what he sowed.

By Chris B.. Posted June 6 2009 at 11:52 PM.

Yes, but think of what he could pass on to the youngsters at Villa Park!! I'd rather have Martins though!

By Gdzvilla.. Posted June 6 2009 at 11:37 PM.

Blyth Spartans are too good for this mercenary individual.
Not said a word since he helped the Toon get dumped.

By Tommy H.. Posted June 6 2009 at 11:11 PM.

I think mon is mad to take Owen, he.s finished and well over paid. Owen should take pay cut and help Newcastle in the championship were he belongs. He owes that to the team whopaid 18 million pounds for him and he hardly played, he.s a joke if he walks away.
