FORMER LIVERPOOL and England winger John Barnes is set to be named Tranmere Rovers boss this week.

Barnes, now managing Jamaica, has been approached by Prenton Park chairman Peter Johnson to replace sacked Ronnie Moore.

And he'll be joined as an assistant on Merseyside by ex-Kop team-mate Jason McAteer.

Barnes, 45, had a stint as Celtic boss in 1999.

I completely agree with you C.K. Barnes is definitely the right man for the tranmere job. As a lifelong tranmere rovers fan myself, I am over the moon at the appointment, and I echo the toughts of most tranmere fans i have spoken to, in saying this. An absolute living legend, and he can revolutionize the english game and the way in which it is played. The progress he has made with the Jamaica national team has been absolutely astounding! I have no doubt that Barnes will go onto become a very big name manager in the english game in the future. Long live the rovers!!

lol had celtic playing attractive football lol not when I was watching,he was the worst manager in celtics history, and as for the fans been prejudice against him thats bull he had 1 of celtics all time legends behind him in kenny dalglish and had plenty chances just never took them,he was a bad manager end off but then again that was 10 years ago or so so maybe he has learnt.

You are an absolute idiot. An even bigger idiot than Peter Johnson. Barnes is an appalling manager and would ruin the club, as would McAteer.

That's brilliant news for English football. A living legend, it's a crime that John Barnes has been treated so callously by the English football world. You see how managers, like Mowbray, Bruce, Dowie, Coleman, Southgate, Adams, Hoddle, Allardyce, Pardew, et al, have failed at their jobs and yet get hired over and over again, perpetuating the same rubbish at their new clubs. It is a travesty that England's most skillful player for a generation and one of the most successful has not been given a chance to manage a professional club in England. He had Celtic playing some attractive football before the prejudice of the fans resulted in his early dismissal and for Barnes to be ostracized ever since shows how racist this country remains at the top level. Tranmere will offer Barnes a chance to get rooted in the coaching game. He can rebuild Tranmere as the 3rd team on Merseyside. In a couple of seasons, I am sure many fans will come out to watch Tranmere just to be entertained by the football Barnes can inspire. If he is left alone to put his ideas on the pitch and blood new and exciting youth players, then Tranmere can provide the platform for promising youngsters to make it to the top. Somebody has to revolutionize the English game and give English players a place to become technically sound but with flair. Where is England's Messi or Ronaldo? It's not coming from managers like Allardyce and Phil Brown, I can tell you. Barnes is the man to offer that environment.
