TEVEZ AND BARRY TO JOIN CITY

Eastlands bosses believe they have clinched deal

MANCHESTER CITY believe they have won a £42million race for Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry.

The richest club in the world are ready to rubber-stamp a £32m deal to steal Tevez away from city rivals United. And they will offer £10m-rated Barry £90,000 a week to see off Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs.

The move for Argentinian striker Tevez, 25, also blows Liverpool and Chelsea out of the chase with City happy to meet Kia Joorabchian's £32m asking price.

Liverpool's bid for the former West Ham forward was the lowest offer received. Boss Mark Hughes will also pay Tevez nearly £140,000 a week in a four-year deal.

Joorabchian will have one final meeting with Old Trafford chiefs this week to find out whether Sir Alex Ferguson sees Tevez as anything more than a bit-part player.

Those assurances are unlikely - leaving the way clear for City.

Hughes is in the Middle East to talk about transfer targets with City's Abu Dhabi owners and has made it clear he sees Tevez as vital to the club.

City are much further down the road with Tevez than Barry. But they are confident their financial clout will get them the Aston Villa captain.

Liverpool felt they were in pole position after their abortive attempt to land Barry, 28, last summer.

But the Reds are unable to match the Arabs' vast wealth.Barry could yet decide he values Champions League football over money but Eastlands officials are confident of getting their man.

Im a Man Utd fan and despite the fact that i idolize Tevez. The fact is if he is released it will clear the way for Benzema and Huntelaar at Old Trafford!! Tevez is quality but Huntelaar is the same age and with a boss like Fergie he'll prosper and hit top form. As for Benzema (the next Zidane), he's only 21 and already a world class striker netting 18 goals in 21 Champions League appearances. Hard to see Tevez leave and especially to the scum down the road but i cant help but think it will have major benefits too!!

By Anthony.. Posted June 4 2009 at 4:21 AM.

Haha... Barry signs and thats part one complete!
Now watch Tevez come to the blues and put the winner past united next season boys :)

Does'nt seem like such a dream now does it???

By Pete.. Posted June 2 2009 at 7:21 PM.

Im a Man U fan and I definately agree that Carlos can go to City becouse Furgason has shown to the world that he hates Teves in his team. I pray that god gives Carlos Teves a talent to always distroy Man Utd anytime they will meet in they ties whether in premier or in any other competition.

It's laughable, all the idiots slagging off City. Robinho: he didn't play a full season yet still had one of the best Premiership goal returns (which is what he's always going to be judged on). City gave all the so-called big 4 decent games last season, including a 3-0 home win over Arsenal, drawing at Anfield, winning at Everton etc. What cost us was the inconsistency of losing away games on the back of UEFA cup games; Kaka: embarassing, yep, but Milan hardly came out of it with any credit did they? I seem to remember Ronaldinho and Obi Mikel turning down Utd in recent years and the reality is, they no longer have real financial muscle when it matters. In reality, City are 2-3 seasons off being a top 4 side but will get there...a decent centre back and a quality tall striker will do for starters!

By GW.. Posted June 1 2009 at 10:30 PM.

the fact is even though city do have all the money they are a second rate team no big players want to go there like kaka for instance, city myt get signing but at the end of the day its the results that count not money

By andy.. Posted June 1 2009 at 8:54 PM.

I have to laugh at the claims that Man U still bring through the best homegrown talent. Get with the program. The generation of the mid-late 90s was quite something, but there's nothing like that at OT now, the only new English player at OT who looks much cop at all is Wellbeck.

You can't list expensive signings like Hargreaves and Carrick as reflective of Man U 'bringing through homegrown talent'. what planet does this person live on? The best academies are Leeds, Man City, West Ham, maybe Boro.

By Matthew Nash.. Posted June 1 2009 at 8:30 AM.

big signings don't guarantee success. as people have pointed out, robinho hasn't exactly been amazing. look at fulham, hardly a big name amongst them and we got europe this year by having a great manager. pretty much the same at everton. man city have a has-been in hughes, second-rate manager, and they now have too much money as well. position in the table says it all.

c'mon you whites!

"....tell me one other prem club to bring through as many world class winning players???? I'll wait for you answer...."

Actually I would say Westham being a Chelsea fan......Defoe, Ferdinand, Carrick, Lampard, J Cole plus many others to name a few.

The person that said the FA Cup is a mickey mouse cup is a complete idiot!! Next the champions league will be a mickey mouse cup.....then the premier league. What a moran!!

By Marc.. Posted June 1 2009 at 1:55 AM.

you guys are idiots by saying city can't deliver champions league football.....they are the richest club in the WORLD now.....they are going to BUY a championship caliber team- they are the next chelsea

i wouldnt be surprised if they won the EPL in 3 years from now or so, i mean Robinho, Tevez, Barry, Ireland, and whoever else they get....geezus

By Dave.. Posted June 1 2009 at 1:24 AM.

im sorry but there is a load of crap on here, im a villa fan and its quite obvious barry wont go to tottenham or city as they haven't got champions league football, liverpool or arsenal do. hes not arsed bout money we've offered him 80,000 a week so why would he change to city for an extra 10? tevez will go city or liverpool as he likes where he lives and kids have settled well at school so doesnt want to move, man city is closer but liverpool is close too and mascherano is there.
another thing, man utd are absolutely class, yer they got beat but city are nowhere near them in terms of class or reputation. with fergie at the helm they will always be challenging for the title.

By ben.. Posted June 1 2009 at 12:06 AM.

Villa should not let Barry go anywhere unless it's to a Top 4 club. He said he want's champions league football, if that's true, then Man City or Spurs can't deliver.

Arthur - 6:25pm

i agree with your comments in general. However you will find the Jonno Greening is a product of the York City youth set up and therefore cannot be regarded has homegrown Man U talent.

As a York fan, I take pride in the players who have come through our ranks, and alongside Dean Kiely, Greening is up there!

By javi.. Posted May 31 2009 at 8:56 PM.

If Tevev goes who cares? look at the faces and tell me if he has the looks of a Man utd player? look at Olegunner ,look at rooney, look at Ronaldo,Keane,Berbatov,Carrick,Giggs,Scholes, and take a look at Benzema

By Desmond Browne.. Posted May 31 2009 at 8:13 PM.

Is it just me in the whole country who doesn't think that Barrys that good? he's neat and tidy but by god he's the most over rayed player on the planet!!

By paul.. Posted May 31 2009 at 7:45 PM.

So Ferdinand, Hargreaves, Rooney aren't home grown players? ok, hargreaves is actually canadian, but the others are pure english. UTD have proven season upon season that they have the best youth policy in the country....i could go on to mention beckham, scholes, giggs, the nevilles, butt, evans, etc...oh sorry I have....tell me one other prem club to bring through as many world class winning players???? I'll wait for you answer....

By dan.. Posted May 31 2009 at 7:41 PM.

Some of the comments on here a hilarious. Bitter reds, idiot pundits and armchairs fans across the country line up to take digs at a club with new found wealth. What utter rubbish being spoken about how we are ruining the game... err, WRONG! Utd did that years ago.

As for homegrown talent, City have one of the best youth set ups in the country, the list posted of the 'recent' (recent being key in this point) kids breaking through at OT made me cringe.

By arthur.. Posted May 31 2009 at 6:25 PM.

lewis,

Don't be such a prat all your life, John O'Shea, Evans, Welbeck, Macheda, Campbell, Neville, Giggs, Scholes, Simpson, Brown, Gibson, Fletcher and whole lot more have come through our youth ranks, United mix homegrown with International talent, we also feed out some of our homegrown talent to other clubs, like Eagles, Greening, Shawcross, Bardsley, etc.

Your club is going to go the same way that Chelsea has gone, moving away from academy football to making large signings in hope of buying success, its a pity because your youth team is a quality team

By adam.. Posted May 31 2009 at 6:09 PM.

Well the worm has turned in Manchester!!!! Man U are now on a downer so their players are jumping ship, City are on their way to the top again and by 2012 will have won everything!!

By andrew J Roberts.. Posted May 31 2009 at 5:41 PM.

this is a very nice story but i wouldnt believe anything until its official because then another kaka saga will happen but also dont have a go at city because the paper have another story and your all jealous that it is actually a possibility now

By evan.. Posted May 31 2009 at 5:08 PM.

tevez should go 2 a weaker team so we get 2 see wot he can do.Ronaldo should stay because he is the best at united wont be the same at real madrid money talks???????????

By by antonio.. Posted May 31 2009 at 4:29 PM.

Errr hello? Barry wants to leave Villa so he can play Champions League football so why one earth would he go to the middle of the table mediocrity that is Manchester City???

Tevez isn't that stupid either.

Not all the footballers are as stupid and money orientated as Robinho.

Money will only buy you champions league and titles if you are decent to start with and Manchester City are still fundamentally a Championship side.

By Carrie.. Posted May 31 2009 at 4:03 PM.

I firmly believe Man. Utd should change their strip to GREEN, to match their faces, what a bunch of GREEN WITH ENVY LOSERS,we will forgive them this time as they are still smarting from the football lesson they received from Barcelona.

THE JOLLY GREEN GIANT.

By John Syred.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:18 PM.

how can anybody even say man city has no ambition? if we didn't have ambition then why would we be spending all this money, why would we be speculating over all the players united and liverpool would love to be able to afford?

fact of the matter is, city will be up top in a few seasons, it took a while for chelsea to build there current squad so it will do for city. its that simple!

By jimmyboy.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:18 PM.

Great players have their place in great football club.i am sure they want success . playing champion league is for great players like tevez and gareth barry .I am sure we will see them both in liverpool fc next season.

By fareed .. Posted May 31 2009 at 2:58 PM.

when im down i always come on here to read all these funny posts, people saying man city will win PL,players only coming for money, always have always will, liverpool dont have enough quality to keep up the challenge, same as arsenal and chelsea, they also sayin man utd bought way to top, they actually bought big players WHILE they were top, stop living in the dreamworld every1 and get a grip on reality, its gonna be the same top 4 for years to come, city, get used to it

By hibo.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:03 PM.

Barru is set to go - so lets do what most of the other clubs do & ask too much for him - £18m if Man City want him & over £14m if any other team wants him - realistically he will only go to Pool, Arsenal or possible Chelsea.

All the best to him, he has served us well but you cannot knock him for having ambitious - we had a good chance to finish 4th but blew it !!

UP THE VILLA

By Bill Aulak.. Posted May 31 2009 at 2:47 PM.

There's no chance of this happening. Barry will either stay at Villa or go to Liverpool and Tevez will probably stay at United but if he doesn't,I can only see him going to Real Madrid or Chelsea.

By ha ha ha.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:57 PM.

if united dont keep tevez, its because he's ganna be a bit time player, so basicly he's not good for united first team, and how are city ganna win title's if there signing players that the big clubs dont need, and barry, i'd love to see him go to liverpool, because he's only going to make them weeker, there's a reason why he's 28 and hasent played in the champions league, and to compete for the tital all clubs have to spend and liverpool wont win it again intill they start splashing out 30million on quality players, if i made a dream team the only two players i would have out of liverpool is gerrard and torres, and two quality players ent anuff to win the league, united and chealsea have more than two good players, thats the reason united got to the final in rome, won the premier league and league cup, and won the club world cup, and chealsea won the f.a cup, the best liverpool could do is finish second, thats a poor season for united to finish second with no silver ware att all, so liverpool fans , wake up keep on saying that your ganna win every fink next year , but the truth is , ur not, in fact i fink city will finish above you in the league, united will win, chealsea second, man city 3rd, and liverpool 4th , good luck

By lewis.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:57 PM.

Dean

What do all the following have in common...Ferdinand, Hargreaves, Rooney, Veron, Berbatov, Anderson, Nani, Van Nistelrooy , Ronaldo? None of them were homegrown and were big money signings. Stop bleating just because 'The Swamp' don't have any financial muscle anymore and are following the Leeds Utd business model. By the way, Richards, Ireland, Sturridge, Onphoura, Evans etc. are all homegrown talent so smoke on that!

By GW.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:47 PM.

Manchester City are going to be a very successful club in the future.Get used to it.The owners, who are in for the long-haul, have declared they want to blend players coming through the excellent Academy with World class stars.Fact.
Robinho has had an excellent first season in the Premier League scoring 14 goals.Only Anelka,Ronaldo and Gerrard have scored more and they have had the benefit of this league before and are currently playing with better squads.
We have several top internationals now and this situation will carry on developing.
We are all looking forward to exciting times and I hope you all are to.

By Piers.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:46 PM.

I love this time of year, the football season's just ended and Man City Fans can begin their annual round of 'day dreamin' - Oh its not just since they become a 'rich club' (that does not own its own Ground!) they have had this annual occurance ever since the days of Colin Bell, Franny Lee, etc. which was the last time they had a decent team. For the next few months they have the luxury (of not having to look at the Premier League table each week and seeing reality) but of being able to delude themselves that they have 'potential' -in this case Arab money that will buy them success -it can happen you know, look at Chelsea! Tevez, Barry? Dream on all at Eastlands, the summer would not be the same without you!

By BlueMoonobserver.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:37 PM.

Some supporters make me laugh; they sit there and say that just because Man City and hopefully Portsmouth are going to have serious spending power and be able to pay the wages for top players they are buying a team of mercenaries. (What did Blackburn and Chelsea do)

What some people seem to forget is that Portsmouth have a 22 000 seated stadium, that is well under a third of the seating capacity at old Trafford so think of how much money per game you get in gate receipts than us.

What current top 4 supports should start to think about is the other teams that are in the division and do remarkable jobs with out the huge gate receipts and TV money and these still have a great support from locals ( I do believe that City is the main supported team in Manchester) .

Take Everton for a start, if the top 4 are so great why is their boss that won the manager of the season award a record 3 times. Portsmouth winning the FA cup last year. Tottenham winning the carling cup last year remember these are so called little clubs not considered good enough to win things; the top 4 should win them all or so some little minded people think. Yes the trophies may have gone back to them this year but who knows what the future now holds.

I hope a shift of power is coming and then there will be more than just 4 clubs fighting to win the best division in the world and this can only be good for the entertainment value of supports.

By CDX.. Posted May 31 2009 at 11:09 AM.

ManU haven't bought their way into top4. All the expensive signings in the last 10 years have been made to maintain their position at the top in UK/Europe and they were already a top club having won prem league and CL when these signings were made.

A bit different from City who are a mid ranking club and are trying to break into top 4 by making expensive signings. Even Chelsea in the pre-Abramovich years was a top 4 club.

By Viv.. Posted May 31 2009 at 10:43 AM.

Oh dear, this seems to have ruffled a few feathers, I would love it if Tevez came to city, he's the right age has a fantastic mentality and great feet. As for Barry, if he came i would see it as a useful signing but if he went elsewhere it would be no great loss as we could easily find someone else of equal/better talent to fill his role in the squad.

By dougie.. Posted May 31 2009 at 10:14 AM.

I find it all so funny that UTD and Chelsea fans are writing on this subject about City going in for them. Sounds like they are all scared to me. Whats wrong lads? We taking the players you want/can't afford?? Well boo hoo. Like most paper talk, this is going to be rubbish, but you can bet on your life that there will be some very good players coming to City this summer. So keep moaning UTD and Chelsea fans, as you know with each season from now on, we will be closer to knocking you into 5th place.

By Owen.. Posted May 31 2009 at 10:12 AM.

simeon do you actually go to a game you sound like a sky red, a know nowt. city have now got the financial clout to do exactly what the top four have been doing for years, namely buying or stealing the best talent from other clubs. the rags and chelski are indeed world class at the later. as for your players past and present did you get shrek, tranny, berba, ferdi, hargreaves, carrick, veron, out of a 3p lucky bag. plus we are still better than solvent as a football club. i said in my earlier post i was happy for pompey which i am. show a bit of class and congratulate them and rags call city fans bitter lol. the number of rags that come on our web site is unbelievable how sad are people like that.

By paul kirby.. Posted May 31 2009 at 9:13 AM.

Simeon get your facts right. Man utd have spent their way to the top. Hagreaves (£20m), Rio(£30m), Anderson(£18m), Berbatov(£30m), Rooney(25m), Carrick(17m), Nani(15m) only to mention but a few. There ae no difference to Man City. Your point applies at Arsenal and Everton

By mkuleko.. Posted May 31 2009 at 9:17 AM.

All These united fans saying city are buying there way into the top 4 and that united did'nt what a load of rubbish. How much did they spend on the likes of Rooney,Ferdinand,Berbatov, and lets not forget that worldbeater Veron. And we hav,nt forgot our youth policy either we have still had accademy players in the team all season with Joe Hart.Micah Richards,Nedum onouha Stevie Ireland,SWP,Danny Sturrage, Ched Evans To name just a few and more will break through next season
The blues are going to be a force within the next 5 years, im not thinking it will happen overnight it will take time. How long did it take fergie before he won something

By Wayne Smith.. Posted May 31 2009 at 9:16 AM.

Man City fans are as delusional as the "Toon". No history, no class, a second rate manager, lot's of overpaid mercenaries plus a load of journeyman work donkeys. laughable.
I don't care about their money, good luck to them, but it will take 10-15 years for it to make them a top four club, if then.
It took my team (Chelsea), from 1993/94 until now before we have become a real top club, these Arabs won't wait that long.

By Kerry Trubee.. Posted May 31 2009 at 9:23 AM.

Simeon who posted at 7.52am what a load of rubbish.

"teams like man united and arsenal have worked for that place ,nurtured youth teams so that they have good players for the futere"

Man United nurturing a youth team...behave, all the youth players that United bring into the first team have been bought in from other clubs. You also want to check your facts as City have in fact the best academy in the country, first team regulars include Richards, Onuhua, Ireland, Johnson (when fit), Wright-Phillips are came through ours.

And to say that Man United haven't bought there way to the top is a joke, Ferdinand £30m, Rooney £25m, Hargreaves, £17m, Berbatov £32m, Ronaldo £13m, Anderson £18m, Carrick £18m and thats just the current squad.

By JC.. Posted May 31 2009 at 9:37 AM.

teams like man city ruin football, with all their finacial clout, they just buy their way into the top four, when teams like man united and arsenal have worked for that place ,nurtured youth teams so that they have good players for the futere, man city wont do that , when their old players need replacing they will buy the youths when they are at their best. anyway who says that players want to move just for money, robinio tried it and had an awful time, look at kaka he rejected an massive deal in january, won't happen. man city ahve no ambition.

Jeez, man city fans must be the most dilusional people in the world,do you really think that by just buying a load of players and slinging them together is going to bring untold success?
not a hope in hell, took chelsea `a few years to do it even with all their money and they were top four allready.while sparky is in charge top 7/8 at best.
theres more to it than spending big dough, robinho hasnt excactly set the pace has he?
players will come for the money only, they are not the sort of players any team needs, especially one that wants to challenge, you will do no better than spurs, inconsistent with the odd euro challlenge or intertwo bob cup competition now and then.

Are all the other teams going to lie down and roll over for a bunch of mercenaries that are off to a club that's a non-entitiy football wise. This Arab wants his head feeling wasting his brethren's oil wealth on that lot. He'll be off and that great little club will go straight into administration.

Chelsea have a lot to show for their massive outlay, don't they, the Mickey-Mouse FA cup that United put their reserve side into the semi's and still nearly got to the final. Well at least all of these stars are gauranteed a rest if they go to Man City, usual forty game season, it's a better gig than butlins. Mark my words they'll be doing a Newcastle a few years down the line and asking Big Sam to keep them up.

To all you none believers, city are heading for the top rather than scrambling about around the bottom of the league. It probably wont be for 2 or 3 years, but we are coming, a top six this year would be nice.

And no not every player we go in for will want to come for varying reasons, but some might be excited, about coming with us on the journey, Then of course the money we can offer isnt a disinsentive is it. ;)

So to all those that think this years top four are the only ones entitled to aspire to win anything major, and the just plain jealous, tough suck it up. ;-) oh, and best wishes to pompey and there new found wealth,

Heard Tevez was house hunting in Alderley edge so he seems to be definitely staying local (although could be Liverpool, United or City).

Would be a great buy.

United and Chelsea wouldn't be there without spending enormous amounts of money. City will be too

By Mike.. Posted May 31 2009 at 6:26 AM.

Tevez off to Real madrid, Barry off to Arsenal or Everton.

Barry Ferguson in for birmingham & berba anywhere his agent can get him... pulling carts for budwiser the "donkey"

By angus cooney.. Posted May 31 2009 at 6:23 AM.

Doesn't matter, City will just waste them anyway, same as they did with Robinho. Second rate team with too much money.

By Joe.. Posted May 31 2009 at 5:45 AM.

Anyone who thinks these players will only join city for money and have no ambition are crazy. It could be true if it was just one world class player playing in a team of average players but, by the end of 2 more transfer windows the team will be full of world class players and these guys know that.
In Barry's case think of it as 1 step sideways to make 3 steps forward.

By zooma.. Posted May 31 2009 at 5:25 AM.

Do you honestly think Villa will sell Barry for 10 million to Man city when they could get alot more for him, remember Wright-Phillips when Chelsea bought him from Man City. Villa will demand double and man city will pay it. Just like Chelsea in there 1st 2 seasons with Abramovich. Villa can get better than Barry for 10-20million. Up the Villa!!

By Mark.. Posted May 31 2009 at 5:19 AM.

why would barry leave villla for man city he wants euorpean football more likely liverpool or arsenal but hope he stays at villa

By chris nicholls.. Posted May 31 2009 at 4:37 AM.

Great news for United fans, now we can concentrate on getting Benzema.

£32m is way too much considering Torres cost £21m. Lavezzi will cost £18m max. Barry will sign for LFC when Alonso goes to real madrid next week.

By GAMBINO.. Posted May 31 2009 at 2:15 AM.

City will have a squad to match the big 4 after this summer, these players know this, and City,s current squad know it as well, this is the reason why we have struggled this season, these 2, bulldust or not, will be 2 of 7-8 some will be better

By at st marks.. Posted May 31 2009 at 1:56 AM.

£32million for teves? why dont United buy him for their pre agreed fee and then sell him on and make a bit of cash from it?

By peter.. Posted May 31 2009 at 1:13 AM.

I heard Tevez was going to Celtic in a swap deal with Patrick McCourt and £5million.

By Aiden McPlastic.. Posted May 31 2009 at 1:19 AM.

Yes please to both. All the Liverpool fans will say Tevez is not worth the money but they would be glad if they got him for that price.

Barry is not as good as everyone makes out, but he's better than what we have at the moment.

By Theo.. Posted May 31 2009 at 1:26 AM.

Gareth Barry has said on numerous occasions that he would only leave Villa for Champions League football. He would look pretty stupid going to a club that is not even in Europe!

By Rickmeister.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:35 AM.

maybe it could be true as rafa looks to hav set sights on lavezzi.

By embadur.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:40 AM.

If Barry goes to man city the man is a joke and have no ambiton at all. He cried how he wanted to play CL fotball and by the time Man city reaches CL he wont be playing fotball anymore

By saas.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:45 AM.

Shawn..where do you think City will be challenging with these two players? As I think you underestimate how good our team will be next season without the distraction of a uefa cup campaign.

By ste.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:42 AM.

I think there will be many players excited by the thought of playing for the richest club in the world. Whilst the Kaka's and Messi's might have to wait another year or so yet a lot of top players will understand the unique position Manchester City are in. With the great leap in quality of signings success is just around the corner... Mind you, the money aint half a bonus !!! Tevez and Barry will be just the start of a mind blowing summer.... And to think only 10 years ago this week City were celebrating climbing out of footballs 3rd tier... Funny old game...

By Phil.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:59 AM.

City will be challenging top 4 next season so any player with ambition will want to play for them, just wait and see....

By James.. Posted May 31 2009 at 1:04 AM.

I hope it's true cos Barry ain't good enough to tie alonso's boot laces, and although tevez would have fitted in? he's not as good as a 32 million price tag warrants.

By bonnythescouser.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:10 AM.

This is great news IF!!! it's true. I'd be very happy if this happened, although it seems unlikely. You never know with City though!

They'll get Tevez, but at 28 I reckon Barry probably wants to play in Europe & challenge for titles more than extra cash, and ManCity are still years away from offering that - Liverpool or Arsenal for him...

By John.. Posted May 31 2009 at 12:17 AM.

What you have to question is if these players have any desire to play for a mediocre team like City. If they do they are nothing more then merchenries opting to stack up as much money possible rather then join a team that will be challenging not just domestically but abroad.
