MICHAEL OWEN will make an early return from injury today if Newcastle need a goal to stay up.

The striker will start on the subs' bench at Aston Villa despite having only trained once since a groin injury a fortnight ago.

Although he will be short of match fitness, interim boss Alan Shearer wants his old England pal on board in case of emergency. Owen will be thrown into the fray if the Magpies have to chase the game.

It could be a dramatic end to the hitman's unproductive four-year spell at St James' Park. Owen's contract runs out at the season's end and he can leave on a free transfer.

Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester City are interested but Shearer wants him to stay if the Toon avoid relegation.

The headline states that MO will come on IF Newcastle need a goal.

Anyone can tell you now that Newcastle will need a goal so he may as well start. He will be injured within 10 minutes so at least then he can be substituted.

I'm sorry but Michael 'Sicknote' Owen, although great between 98 and 03, is now completely washed up. He needs to be put out to pasture with his 'orses!

Am a big fan of michael owen but i think persistent injuries have taken its toll on him.i will retire at the end of the season if i were him. history will always remember him for his great achievements with liverpool and england.

Has-been, retire and leave with dignity.
