NEDUM ONUOHA is on the verge of signing a new three-year contract at Eastlands.

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes sees the powerful defender as key to getting into the Premier League's top six.

Onuoha, 22, will be at City until 2012. The central defender turned down a call-up from Nigeria in 2007 and will lead England's Under-21s in this summer's European Championship. He is on the verge of making Fabio Capello's full squad.

City keeper Joe Hart also wants talks with boss Hughes after being shoved down the pecking order with the arrival of Shay Given.

Birmingham are interested in taking Hart on loan and he has also been linked in the past with Arsenal and Aston Villa.

City are expecting to see third-choice keeper Kasper Schmeichel leave for around £2million in the summer.

And Roma are keen on Bulgarian striker Valeri Bojinov but will not want to match the £5.75m City paid to Fiorentina two years ago.
