THE WORST XI

Yes, here it is - the very poorest 11 players of the season

SCOTT CARSON (WBA)

Was given another chance in the Premier League at the Hawthorns but has looked hesitant and short of confidence behind a poor defence.

How he ever won England caps is utterly beyond me.

EMMANUEL EBOUE (Arsenal)

Has looked woeful at times for a player of his experience. Would surely be out the door if Arsene Wenger had serious money to spend.

No team with Arsenal's Champions League ambitions can afford a player like Eboue.

MIKAEL SILVESTRE (Arsenal)

And it gets worse for Arsenal. Not only do they have Eboue, but they also have Silvestre.

Only signed as a stopgap but when he stepped in for crucial matches it wasn't hard to see why Fergie showed him the door at United.

MICAH RICHARDS (Man City)

Has completely lost his focus. Believes he is a far better player than he really is.

Positional sense is appalling and the only silverware he cares for are watches, bracelets, earrings, and chains. Needs to change his attitude immediately.

NICKY SHOREY (Aston Villa)

Had a great chance to show the form that got him into the England squad but threw it away. Looked sluggish and overweight all season.

Martin O'Neill's worst buy. Would struggle to get into the Reading team now.

DAVID BENTLEY (Tottenham)

His monumental ego has completely overshadowed his patchy contribution at the Lane. One brilliant goal at Arsenal is not enough to make a season.

Has been placed on transfer list and it's not hard to see why. Has struggled to get near the team since Harry Redknapp took charge.

JOEY BARTON (Newcastle)

Has let his team down every time he has been called upon. Has been an unmitigated disaster on Tyneside and it's hard to see anyone being prepared to give him yet another chance.

Has utterly squandered a fantastic natural talent and there can be no greater condemnation than that.

STEED MALBRANQUE (Sunderland)

Another waster with undoubted class who only looks interested when he is playing for a contract. Has been a passenger in relegation fight.

Spurs fans were sad to see him go, but it looks like one of the few decisions Juande Ramos got right in his brief stay at White Hart Lane.

ELANO (Man City)

Has had nose put out of joint by arrival of star names at City. Has let down supporters with his fitful contribution and will be on his bike this summer.

Came off with a mysterious 'something in his eye' injury earlier this month and has done nothing to endear himself to manager Mark Hughes.

JOHAN ELMANDER (Bolton)

He cost £8.2million from second-rate French club Toulouse and five goals in 29 games sums up what a costly mistake Gary Megson made. Looks completely out of place in the Premier League and has no discernible talent - not exactly a great recommendation in a side which has often struggled for goals.

AFONSO ALVES (Middlesbrough)

His failure to adapt to the Premier League after scoring regularly in the toy-town Dutch league is seen as the biggest factor in Boro's demise.

A very expensive mistake by Gareth Southgate and one which looks worse every time Alves gets on the pitch which, it must be said, is not very often.

MOST OVER-RATED PLAYER

Shaun Wright-Phillips (Man City)

Failed at Chelsea and has shown since his return last August that he cannot inspire his team-mates in the less pressurized atmosphere of Manchester City.

WORST KIT

Liverpool Away

This green shirt and dark shorts looks like army surplus gear. Liverpool have not won a league title since introducing a green away kit in the early 1990s. Which is the second reason it shoudl be dumped.

WORST GROUND

Fratton Park, Portsmouth

This must surely take this award hands down every year. Old, scruffy, antiquated. You need to go back to World War II for the last time it was fit for purpose.

lucas is a complete idiot, how can he replace alonso??? alonso can actually pass the ball 2 yards without giving it away, lucas can bearly even kick the ball fullstop!

By Chris.. Posted August 13 2009 at 12:30 PM.

How can some of you people say that Michael owen Is Supposed to be in the worst XI He Is one of the Best Finishers in This Planet and If U dont agree with this then obviously you dont know football .

By Abid.. Posted June 15 2009 at 3:07 PM.

STEED MALBRANQUE??? completely DISAGREE with his inclusion in this poor team!! Obviously he has been added by someone who has watched the odd clip on the biased match of the day. He was one of the best performers for sunderland this season! There were far more overrated underperforming so called "star players" in the premiership this season....

By Dan.. Posted June 8 2009 at 1:53 PM.

worst premier League XI

Reina
Carragher
Skirtel
Arbeloa
Agger
Gerrard
Babel
Riera
Lucas
Torres
Kuyt

By Matt.. Posted June 7 2009 at 5:33 PM.

BERBATOV...............thank god he went to united and not city, never seen a more uninterested and self loving egotist in all my days!city to climb higher and higher, united to sink

By mark.. Posted June 7 2009 at 5:06 PM.

Liverpool's away kit was grey this season not green.

See the 4-1 win at Old Trafford for proof.

By Jon.. Posted June 7 2009 at 1:40 PM.

dossena may be rubbish but scored against man u and real

By nick.. Posted June 7 2009 at 12:49 PM.

Brad Jones - performed poorly and showed how badly they missed Schwarzer
Micah Richards - decided to go body building and lost his pace, coupled with his bling personality - terrible
Pogatez - crap thug - remember his assault on Possebon
Coloccini - Big hair, dreadful play
Dossena - supposedly Italy's first choice left back - yeah only when Grosso was injured, dreadfully unfit and out of his depth defending
Deco - a perfection representation of the Scolari era at Chelski
Bentley - shocking decline
Nani - going backwards
Ryan Babel - like bambi on ice only less co-ordinated
Kitson - reading to stoke and back again with no goals to show - the Frisbee
Michael Owen - shadow of the player he once was

By Donal O'Connell.. Posted June 7 2009 at 9:25 AM.

All you people that say Bale is a flop, i totally dis-agree with you. He has done good for tottenham! I think it should be Alan Hutton.

By Reece Barber.. Posted June 7 2009 at 8:53 AM.

Carson, Hoyte, Enrique, Coloccini, Silverstre, Walcott, Deco, Alan Smith, Boa Morte, Alves, Owen

p.s Gomes was outstanding in the second half of the season.
Bent was one of the top english scorers this season and the fool that said Modric just proves you know nothing about football.

By Gary.. Posted June 7 2009 at 8:04 AM.

SWP u sure pal. apart from the names already said how about owen or k.jones or even anderson. n i reckon dunne has a place in that team aswell along wiv richards. boro worst ground.

By jake.. Posted June 7 2009 at 12:35 AM.

I wonder if those who pick the worst 11 have any mental illness.....how on earth you guys miss the worst player in the history of English football....LUCAS LEIVA. That idiot is the worst player I have ever seen in all my life.

By Matsoko.. Posted June 1 2009 at 4:40 AM.

as a bolton fan i could hardly agree more about elmander. but dimitar barbeque, fabianski should be in there. and how could you miss fabrice muamba and gavin mccann????

By simon bwfc.. Posted May 31 2009 at 9:22 PM.

dont agree with swp as most overated.think that should go to walcott who has the vision of a blind man and cant cross a ball to save his life

What a laugh,SWP most over rated player,I think you mean the most Brutalised player by Man. Utd.
Most overated Count Dracula,I dont think he ever got out of his coffin.

By John Syred.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:47 PM.

Miccah Richards u got zat one spot on... He thinks he's the best thing zat happened to britain after tea...most overrated player must be adebayor... This one was moaning abt his pay ,even comparing himself to henry... Now he got the pay rise ,he forgot how to score goals... Keep saying the fans made him like zat ... he should have kept his big month shut in the first place... I say if wenger is lucky this time around, and some stupid club is ready to pay 25 millions for him,let this untalented prat go,and buy David villa instead...

By Zack.. Posted May 31 2009 at 3:40 PM.

Good effort, but for me you made one or two mistakes esp Eboue at right back. Hes bad but not a right back. How about

Carson
Chimbonda Silvestre Coloccini Bale
Bentley Tainio Amdy Faye Kapo
Garcia Alves

Bench: Cech, Donk, Hibbert, Kitson, Di Michele, Reo Coker, Barton

By Coledinho.. Posted May 31 2009 at 10:10 AM.

Can't take issue with much of the XI. However, worst ground Fratton Park? It's got character, soul, it's not one of the soulless identikit bowls which are coming to characterise football.

What idiot wrote that bit?

By Matthew nash.. Posted May 31 2009 at 9:15 AM.

Yes Eboue and Silvestre are not good enough, but Arsenals worst player of the season by a mile was Adebayor. He got his pay rise and just couldnt be bothered.Wenger must sell him

By Gooner Don.. Posted May 31 2009 at 7:18 AM.

silvester yeah, but as for Eboue- he is the man!

By Dennis.. Posted May 28 2009 at 2:20 PM.

SWP most over rated? What planet are you on? Are you a ManUre fan? What other explanation can there be for that. Admittedly not back to his best, but he has been good value this year. His performance this season has been the proverbial country mile better than the following:-

Deco, Quaresma, Bentley, Modric, Pavlyuchenko, Leiva, Dossena, BERBATOV, Nasri, Elmander, amongst others

By funky doopster.. Posted May 25 2009 at 11:27 AM.

WORST PLAYER I HAVE EVER SEEN IS.......GELSON FERNANDES FROM MAN CITY

By DC.. Posted May 25 2009 at 12:42 AM.

ade-cant -score should be in there. why didnt wenger take 25million at the start of the season for that mug we could of used that money to replace flamini

I can only assume that this was made up by the same clown who did the best team of the year.

Complete garbage.

By David.. Posted May 24 2009 at 7:13 PM.

eboue is good. inaccurate ratings this site have.

By 1ky.. Posted May 24 2009 at 3:47 PM.

Fratton Park is a football stadium. You go there to watch football. You dont see half the stadium in suits, you dont get spoonfed prawn sandwiches and 100% of the people in the ground are football fans, not on clowns on a free work jolly. So what if the toilets are a little out of date? Football has gone to the dogs with corporate jollies. Give me Fratton Park anyday.

By dan.. Posted May 24 2009 at 2:27 PM.

Spot on about Richards

By Chris.. Posted May 24 2009 at 12:35 PM.

micah richards shouldn't be on that but lucas should be along with wheater.
and man city's away strip (the stripy 1) is the worst its aweful.
most over-rated player should be alves

By Suzy.. Posted May 24 2009 at 2:10 PM.

eboue!! he has been exellent since febuary and has done well when called up on but the pressure of geting booed did mke him play a lil woful earlyier on

as for silvestre he has had an adequate year and has shown he is worth more than the 700k price tag

By jj.. Posted May 24 2009 at 1:10 PM.

Good article completely spoilt by the inclusion swp what a credit full of skill,running,100%,and not a bit of trouble.May take one or two players from the swamp but none instead of this true professional

By John Lockley.. Posted May 24 2009 at 11:25 AM.

If I was you guys, I would report all of these to Trading Standards. You thought you were getting footballers, instead you got a load of donkeys hahaha.

By Tally.. Posted May 24 2009 at 10:52 AM.

Fratton Park REAL football ground for real fans, no mamby pamby prawn sandwich brigade here thanks very much. Always a good atmosphere with home and away fans making a noise. Players don't like it here because they are close to the crowd and most of them think they are invincible and untouchable. Pompey fans dont want to move away from Fratton Park.

By Glenn.. Posted May 24 2009 at 9:55 AM.

TJ, are you for real? Have you ever watched football before? "Aw, don't be nasty, it's puts them off"

These people are on £50,000 a WEEK, if they can't pass the ball five yards then we are entitled to give them abuse.

By Jon.. Posted May 24 2009 at 9:44 AM.

WHAT swp over rated wat a load of rubbish now if u want to see overrated go down to the swamp and look at a certain mr berbatov NOW THAT IS OVERRATED what a joke i see no man u players in that list swp scored 2 goals on his debut there are far more overrated players in the premier league

By jamie.. Posted May 24 2009 at 9:16 AM.

What about Adebayor & Berbaflop!

By Arsenal411.. Posted May 24 2009 at 8:53 AM.

How about Curtis Davis hes useless.Next England centre half your having a laugh.

By Trust Me.. Posted May 24 2009 at 8:52 AM.

i dont agree with the list i think they is lots of under achievers so it wont help there confidence

By bluemanx.. Posted May 24 2009 at 8:52 AM.

How come there is no reference to Afonso Alves "Goal Machine" as he is known at the riverside haha

By Tj.. Posted May 24 2009 at 9:05 AM.

wat about dave jeff and tony, or y dont u all shut up and stog slagging people off, are any of u better than any of them? no my point proven

By fred.. Posted May 24 2009 at 8:37 AM.

your right to include malbranque, but the sad thing is, he is our best player

By ray newby.. Posted May 24 2009 at 7:08 AM.

How has Gomez for Spurs not made this list, or Darren Bent?

Barton doesnt even deserve to have his name on this list, he needs to be let go, and promptly forgotten all together he existed in the premiere league!

By Sean T.. Posted May 24 2009 at 7:02 AM.

no way eboue is good player.
BerBATOV( Man u)
NEWCASTLE FULL TEAM EXCLUDE OBAFEMI
fabiansky(GONER)
PORTSMOUTH BACK FOUR
MIDLESBORO FULL TEAM

By tangotango.. Posted May 24 2009 at 4:55 AM.

joey barton does not deserve to be in the premier league ,he is a disgrace to the profession , if it was up to me i would kick him out the league , he does not appreaciate the talent he was gifted with.

By brian jones.. Posted May 24 2009 at 4:52 AM.

i am not saying this cos i am a gonner. come on man eboue, no way.people like berbatov are the worst. and what about the teams below us.

By andy bas.. Posted May 24 2009 at 2:54 AM.

Arsenal finish above 16 teams in the league yet have not one but TWO players in the 'worst 11'?

If you say so...

By John.. Posted May 24 2009 at 12:08 AM.

SWP SPOT ON

By OSAMA.. Posted May 23 2009 at 11:17 PM.

Idiots.... berbatov hasnt been a huge success but he is uniteds top assister and has more than a handful of goals. Hardly worse than elmander and alves.

By mike.. Posted May 23 2009 at 10:58 PM.

what about lucas !

By mooboy.. Posted May 23 2009 at 11:05 PM.

You have got to be joking putting in Malbranque .Are you mad! He's a 100% player. I'd have put in Robinho or Walcott - overrated!

By Janis.. Posted May 23 2009 at 11:02 PM.

What about worst purchase of the season, Keane 19 million or Berbatov 30 million?

By adam williams.. Posted May 23 2009 at 10:16 PM.

Absolutely agree!

By Tungbengvn.. Posted May 23 2009 at 2:53 PM.

michael owen should have been there and viduca

By jig.. Posted May 23 2009 at 10:50 AM.

Why did you failed to include our own Berba-waste? I think Sir Alex goofed on his purchase. What he should do is to return him to Spurs and collect our money back for the onward purchase of tireless Tevez.

By ADEYINKA AYODELE.. Posted May 23 2009 at 7:26 AM.

Liverpool away worst kit? For starters, it's their European way kit and secondly, there are many kits out their that can be considered worse, even if you have no taste! I for one like it.

By DJ.. Posted May 22 2009 at 7:44 PM.

The inclusion of Carson is wrong. Yes he is a young keeper who has made mistakes this season, but he has also made some fantastic saves. He is not helped by a poor defence in front of him.

By Dave Neale.. Posted May 22 2009 at 9:13 AM.

Carson has in fact been a very good keeper this season. He has had little or no protection from a very weak defence.

I happily bet that he would be far from bottom of any performance rating for keepers and would love to see comparison stats on him v James for example.

Given West Brom get the defence sorted out for next season I am sure he'll prove the doubters wrong.

IMWT

By AKA Stairs.. Posted May 22 2009 at 10:00 AM.

If you buy goods which don't live up to the hype, you can return them for replacement or money back. Why not do this for football transfers? Off-loading all your old rubbish would then be only 'free transfers' instead of millions of wasted cash. Gary Megson hasn't stopped laughing yet selling us Abdulouye Meite. Why isn't he in your list? Most Baggies supporters have no idea what he looks like although our medical staff are on intimate terms having repaired every muscle in his body.

By Cyril Randle.. Posted May 22 2009 at 7:02 AM.

I dont agree with Shaun Wright-Phillips being the most overated player, more like Robinho

By George.. Posted May 22 2009 at 1:58 AM.

Eboue had his bad moments this season, but definitely should not be on this list.

By Obage.. Posted May 22 2009 at 12:22 AM.

Micah Richards and Wight-Phillips very harsh

By brad.. Posted May 22 2009 at 12:07 AM.

dont argree with the carson inclusion. he had a poor defence infront of him who in turn had no cover from midfield infront of them. the stats show carson made the most saves in the league but also dealt with the most shots. its the way mowbray set the team up but he'll learn.....in mowbray we trust......BOING BOING

By sunny.. Posted May 21 2009 at 9:27 PM.

I dont agree on Eboue, he played not that bad and was effective at the far end of the season, I am sure if he had played in the stead of Gibbs, our team would not have lost by that margin against Man U

By Fredrick Matsheza.. Posted May 21 2009 at 8:47 PM.

i agree with silvestre, he was shocking. but i disagree with eboue, he would be a candidate for right midfield but when he plays right back hes normally very good.

By goooooooner.. Posted May 21 2009 at 6:47 PM.

Eboue? Bit harsh, innit? He's done well as a squad player (mainly backup right-back) called into the team through injuries.

By Dave.. Posted May 21 2009 at 7:21 PM.

I agree with the choice of Scott Carson. Very poor and i think our defence would have been better with a better keeper behind them. They weren't great anyway and with the added worry of a struggling keeper behind them it was always going to end badly. Welcome back Deano!
