The Scottish giants will give the Newcastle striker a pay-as-you-play deal worth £50,000 a week, plus huge bonuses for goals and success.
See why Michael Owen is the most clinical striker in England - click here for the full story
Former England star Owen currently earns £115,000 a week but is out of contract at the end of the season and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is unwilling to commit to a deal on anything like similar terms.
After Owen's injury-ravaged four years on Tyneside, the club have long been resolved to allow him to walk away as a free agent, especially if they are relegated.
Such are the doubts about Owen's durability coming up to 30 that no club has made a firm offer for a striker constantly overlooked by England boss Fabio Capello.
Although Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa are all believed to be interested, not even cash rich City are prepared to come close to Owen's current deal.
But Celtic would offer him a significant signing-on fee, plus top drawer wages. And the move could appeal to him, with the prospect of Champions League football and enough goals to persuade Capello to consider a World Cup recall.

By anne celtic fanannefriel@yahoo.com.. Posted May 16 2009 at 1:48 PM.
owen would be great at park head becoz of the rubbish standards of the spl he would score a head of goals 4 the glasgow giants!
CUMMON THE HOOPS:)
By zmzackie.. Posted May 12 2009 at 7:18 AM.
As a England fan. Its sad to see Newcaste plummit this season since it has really affected Capello's judgement on Owen.
The mad has not lost anything, Rooney would struggle to @ St.James park. Come to WC next year, he is still the next best natural goal-scorer after Wazza.
So hopefully. A EPL club like Everton would buy him. Celtic seems a bit too easy for me.
By Dipset.. Posted May 11 2009 at 6:28 AM.
Michael Owen will get injured just reading this!!!.His career more or less ended the day he left Liverpool for Real Madrid!.The Anfield giants won't be interested in resigning him and neither will any other top club but in the poor SPL he may just last a few seasons.
He wasted his entire career by leaving Liverpool FC!!
By Imran.. Posted May 11 2009 at 1:42 AM.
Let him play for nothing and get 'commission' for anything he then achieves. That way no one loses out except, possibly, the player if he doesn't produce the goods.
By Celtic in Singapore.. Posted May 11 2009 at 12:45 AM.
Celtic should buy him, just so he can drag the club under, playing for the reserves and eating all there money up, just like keane and gravesen, another 1 to laugh at i guess, WATP
By AJ.. Posted May 11 2009 at 12:28 AM.
WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED. Owen will just get injured. Vinegar of Castlemilk will still get a game ahead of him haha. WATP

Michael Owen is a better player than going to the scottish league, he needs to be playing in the premiership at his level. Michael Owen is one of the best strikers in the world and will be for many more years.
Alan Shearer got it spot on Owen is doing all the work for newcastle and the players are not making opportunitys dor his. In my opinion if he stays in the premiership next season, in a different team than newcaslte maybe either manchester city, spurs or wigan which would be a good choice for him as i think it will suit Owen style of play. He will be included in the next World Cup as, he will have a proper team will will provide him with opportunitys to score.

owen will be pyoor brulliant know, canny wait to see him in the hoops with nakamura, crespo and some othe 'blue chip' signings know?
By Brendan O'Brendan.. Posted May 10 2009 at 8:56 PM.
I'd rather we went for the Danish youngster Laj-Jon Wasawar. Heard he's ripping up their league.
By Robert Sands' Dietician.. Posted May 10 2009 at 7:55 PM.
I used to be the head of youth coaching at shellick and i have to say owens too old to get a game for us. I would prefer celtic to bring through the cream of the youth system. Ill supply the cream. Alan Brazil knows what im talking about ;-)
By Jambo Torbett.. Posted May 10 2009 at 7:27 PM.
I cannae wait to see Owens babyface running wild around the pitch at paradise. He's still got a great set of legs on the wee lad.
By Jim Torbett.. Posted May 10 2009 at 7:06 PM.
I think celtics special relationship with newcastle will be the key to Owen becoming a bouy. lets hope he is celtic minded though unlike gordon strachan.
By Susan Sands.. Posted May 10 2009 at 7:00 PM.
I think we shud sign Owen incase we draw Artmedia Bratislavia in the Champions Leegue qualifiers again.
By A.Rogan.. Posted May 10 2009 at 6:47 PM.
He should have gone to Sellik years ago. They used to put much more into their players then.
By Alan Brazil.. Posted May 10 2009 at 6:41 PM.
Michael Owan would bee a great singing for us. We have the bigest and best support in the world and with the speed of hesselink, the finese of Brown9 and the calm authority of arthur borat we would be onto a pure winner. Welcome to paradisimo micheal, we love you already. Please love us back.
By Vic Tim.. Posted May 10 2009 at 6:23 PM.
Michael Owen would LOVE IT up a parkhead. We play in front of 120,000 fans every week and have the utmost of sporting integrity. Our fans are amongst the most affluent in the UK and we sell the best chicken suppers out of any ground you'll ever visit. We are so kind-hearted we even throw money at referees from time to time.
Owen and Rooney for celtic next season!
By bobby sands.. Posted May 10 2009 at 6:01 PM.
That would confirm us the new Galactigo's Club any club that can take 1,000,000 supporters to Seville deserves this kind of signing
By Hugh Janus.. Posted May 10 2009 at 6:03 PM.
Excellent move for the player and club, linking up with crespo, koki mizuno and pat mccourt the cream of europe will take note, we're coming for number 2
By Robert Sands.. Posted May 10 2009 at 6:02 PM.
Owen is too old, we need to bring in some young guys. Younger, fitter, better looking young guys.
By Peter File.. Posted May 10 2009 at 5:55 PM.
The hoops are the biggest club in the world. We should be aiming to sign bigger players like the German Ratzinger. We are also the greatest fans in the world, I would gladly give half my giro money to see him bless our stadium. My season ticket holding friends at Glasgow City Council would also contribute. Nice to see our boys waving the IRA flags at the game yesterday.
By Bredan O'Declan.. Posted May 10 2009 at 5:24 PM.
I'd love to see Owen at The Piggery. Sellick are the biggest club in Europe - no, make that the biggest club in the World. They'll open up the biscuit tin, and find the 50K, nae problem. If they sell Boruc for 11 million (remember that one?) they can buy a player who's not past his prime.
By WDYGH?.. Posted May 10 2009 at 5:01 PM.
why is drogbs still playing football for chelsea? are they that afraid of him that they can't leave him on the bench? after his display on wednesday against barcelona he shouldn't be playing at all!!!. if it were any other player they wouldn't be.
By sarah crooks.. Posted May 10 2009 at 5:00 PM.
This is an outstanding signing for the sellik, honestly, he is better than Gazza and we would make 50k a week selling the strips in Japan anyway.

By LALALA.. Posted May 10 2009 at 4:24 PM.
thats what celtic need, a player who Will score goals on a regular basias ( when fit ) perfect partner for mcdonald, jvh is out the door, samaras is not performing, plus if newcastle go down u wont need to pay big money, the money saved from not paying big money would allow celtic to fork out a big wage packet, at celtic u fighting every season for the league and 2 domestic cups, geting to play in one of the biggist if not the biggist derby in the world, and playing in the champions league everyseason againsit the biggist teams in the world, or stay at newcaslte n play for .............a goal bonus, rumers are hes a celtic man throo n throo if true owen will no tht playing for the hoops jersey meens soo much more than ur avarage football club
By Higgybhoy.. Posted May 10 2009 at 3:25 PM.
celtic are the biggest team in europe and with owen we would finally have replaced european footballer of the year henrik larsson in the hoops attack.
By dermot mcgreen.. Posted May 10 2009 at 4:14 PM.
celtic are the biggest team in europe and with owen we would finally have replaced european footballer of the year henrik larsson in the hoops attack. we have worl class players throughout the team and all we need is the missing link for british player of the year scott brown (he always gets 9 out of 10 in match reports) to provide for
By dermot mcgreen.. Posted May 10 2009 at 4:09 PM.
Owen would cost us peanuts. If he was on a pay as you play then he'll be injured for most of the year.
If he ever hits form Strachan will inexplicably drop him before every big game anyway so no bonus paid for those either. He wouldn't cost a thing. I can't wait to see fleeting appearances against St Mirren and Kilmarnock.
..........Will never happen
By Craig.. Posted May 10 2009 at 4:09 PM.
WOW I'm so excited at the thought of Michael Owen being at celtic next season! When we get him and Crespo we will be a force to be reckoned with. I reckon we can go far in the champions league next season, maybe to the semi-final. Makes you proud to be Irish!
By declan o'murphy.. Posted May 10 2009 at 4:02 PM.
if micheal owen had any commitment 2 newcastle he would take a pay cut if they get relegated and spend a season in the championsip maybe scoring 20-30 goals in a better leauge than the spl
By ourkid.. Posted May 10 2009 at 2:57 PM.
A good move for Owen and England. Celtic is the top-flight team he needs to play for to get back into top form, the present Newcastle side is just not up there. Also, it would be good for England as we need an in-form Owen to partner with Rooney, Crouch and Walcott if we are to be real contendors for the World Cup next year.
By HYUFD.. Posted May 10 2009 at 2:56 PM.
50k a week! Lawell will recoup our money no probs, he'll just open a bookies up next to the training ground. I'd rather him than McDonald, I was rather annoyed at his theatrics. Clearly trying to win us free kicks as it was the only way we even half looked like scoring past Weir, Bougherra and Alexander. At least we have McManus and Caldwell. We'll surely be able to get 10m + for Boruc - I mean what world class goalkeeper doesn't lose at least 25 soft goals in just over 3 years?
By Seamus O'Brannigan.. Posted May 10 2009 at 2:55 PM.
Hey, what's with all these so called Tims talking about having lost the league yesterday...
Are you just chocolate Celtic fans? IT AIN'T OVER GUYS...
I agree with those who say Owen is finished and the fact that no way will Celtic agree a 50k per week salary! The biscuit tin may have been chucked out but fiscal probity is the name of the game at Parkhead...
Keep the faith - the Rangers may yet end up chumps instead of champs (again)...
Hail Hail!
By Jmac336.. Posted May 10 2009 at 2:47 PM.
Love to see Owen at Parkhead.
50K a game is chicken feed and small potatoes to a club like ours.
TGFITW would welcome him with open arms as he is "Celtic Minded"
By D. Luded.. Posted May 10 2009 at 1:39 PM.
Why would he want to goto a team who will not even be in the champions league group stages?
By dmgers.. Posted May 10 2009 at 1:21 PM.
yes i think owen should consider such move.
as far as he is playing with a team like newcastle his tecknique will be wasted
By ali mohsen.. Posted May 10 2009 at 12:54 PM.
Good riddance...let Celtic have him, let anyone have him. My only fear is we may have to keep him, who in their right mind mind would pay $50,000 a week for a pig in a poke. His day's of brilliance were gone the day he left Anfield and then Freddy Sheperd tried to look like Mr Nice Guy after he sacked Bobby Robson by paying stupid money for an injury prone, one time great.
What would Owen do to one of his horses that came up limping after every race as he does after every game??? It's time for M.O. to be put out into the meadow for the rest of his day's.
By Kenneth Straw.. Posted May 10 2009 at 12:06 PM.
50K a week is only two races at Redcar. How's he going to cope, that's peanuts.
By Rob.. Posted May 10 2009 at 11:32 AM.
these comments are very funny, so called England & Newcastle (& Rangers) supporters laughing at Owen's proposed move to Scotland? the EPL is a great league but what about all the scottish managers that have won it or the foreign players that win player of the year award. If this story comes to fruition then I'll attend a Church of Scotland every Sunday for the next year.
Scotland's biggest club won't touch him with a barge pole, But Strachan will back down to England in the summer & take the job at St James's Park. How long is it since Newcastle or England have won anything?
By smoky woods.. Posted May 10 2009 at 11:22 AM.
Michael Owen is an absolute disgrace. As a Newcastle fan, I feel he personifies Newcastle United...an aging former great on big wages with no passion and nothing to give. Personally, I would carry Owen to Glasgow if it meant we would be rid of him. Newcastle would be in the top half now if we had any players who cared for Newcastle as much as Shearer does, sadly this is not the case.
By Richard Saint.. Posted May 10 2009 at 11:09 AM.
Owen would be okay in the spl, no better than McDonald though but with those two up front we would be quite clinical
By Alexander Backhander.. Posted May 10 2009 at 11:01 AM.
Owen would be a an ideal striker for the hoops him any day over the likes of Samaras!! and you just gotta remember the likes of thompson & Sutton who got there careers back on track if you honestly think that Raf, Schite & t Gravesson were top of there game then you clearly know nothing about football. any footballer who signs for newcastle Knows there career is gonna go down hill, with Celtic having no debt and not really splashing out over the years i think the fans deserve a few top signings and cash earned from champions league could provide that easy.
Remember that Celtic are in the top 10 richest clubs in the uk! a lot of people need to remember that
By darryl.. Posted May 10 2009 at 10:39 AM.
couldnt be scripted better, past it player goes to celtic/rangers for last big pay day a la keano etc. no one else will have him because hes rubbish, so get off to a poor league where he might look good. get lost owen. disgrace to the shirt.
By junior.. Posted May 10 2009 at 10:13 AM.
owen is like an out of date can of spam.. id love him to pull on a celtic top as big madjid bougherra would have him in his back pocket without a doubt. gers for the title.
By andrew robertson.. Posted May 10 2009 at 9:33 AM.
We MUST sign Owen if we have any ambition to regain the SPL next season. He would guarantee 8-10 goals a season up here - surely we cannot look this gift horse in the mouth?
By John Newitt.. Posted May 10 2009 at 9:04 AM.
Michael Owen..... just what we need guys, another guy who will skin us every week once big bobo has left.
Be careful with this one
Just cause he played for madrid
Kounts for nothing
By Ohit hurtz.. Posted May 10 2009 at 8:17 AM.
Just what we need Owen will score for fun, after yesterdays humilation by Rangers we need a top class signing if we are to get to the champions league next season, Owen will get us the goals in the qualifying rounds, everyone will be terrified of drawing the hoops next season, is it true Owen really wears a celtic traing top under his geordie top.
By F. Amine.. Posted May 10 2009 at 7:46 AM.
mr owen not worthy of a place in celtic fc team since he left liverpool he has took the wages and gave nothing in return to the teams he has played
for always injured tell him to try non league that is his leevei now
By allister dall.. Posted May 10 2009 at 8:01 AM.
Better players at his present level have failed in Scotland.I give Ralf Schite Tommy Gravesson both at the top of their Game.Celtic would be better sticing with Spud Mcourt imo.4 in a row Bubble just Burst !
By tam Bro.. Posted May 10 2009 at 6:34 AM.
I herd that Crespo is a dead cert for the hoops next season. My mate Cully is dead on with his stories
By jimbo.. Posted May 10 2009 at 4:49 AM.
Owen is so bad now even in one of the poorest leagues in the world he will surely fail. A singular striker who is always injured you chaps that rate owen and love to point at his goal scoring record need to ask yourselfs one question which is better a striker that scores 25 goals a season and has zero assists or a stiker that scores 15 goals and creates another 20 for the team. Scotish fans need to wake up. Your league is only a dumping ground for has beens.
By brian ashford russell.. Posted May 10 2009 at 3:47 AM.
He's no any better than Scott McDonald. I'd rather we signed Hernan Crespo.
By monobrow.. Posted May 10 2009 at 2:10 AM.
I'd love him to come to my beloved Celtic.
With Robson and Flood on the wings, Hartley and ex Barca star Crosas in the middle and Owen upfront with hitman Samaras we'd be unbeatable.
Here's to 4 in a row after a great result yesterday.
By Patrick McCourt.. Posted May 10 2009 at 1:52 AM.
I think owen is finished as a top class player (has been for about 3 years) Had he still been a top drawer player he would never have joined a second rate team like the mags. I think he is just seeing out his career, picking up mega bucks as long as he can. he has always relied on pace but when that went due to his hamstrings being short and a never ending injurylist he was basically finished.
By Mr Beaver (colchester).. Posted May 10 2009 at 1:34 AM.
Can this weekend get any worse?
We lose the league to the biggest team in Scotland, then try to buy the biggest dud striker in England.
By Faiden Already.. Posted May 10 2009 at 1:28 AM.
He prefers his horses now anyway, had the chance to be the greatest england scorer of all time and blew it going to spain .......... and now he's off to scotland hahahahaha my how far a player falls!
By Luke B.. Posted May 10 2009 at 1:25 AM.
With 80,000 fans coming to Celtc Park every week we should be aiming higher than Owen. Desmond Dermott is a billionaire and should put his hands in his pockets and spalsh the cash on someone like Ronaldo. With a dream team of Macdonald and Ronnie I genuinely think we would have a real chance of reaching the champions league finale next year, expecially if we can tie Gary Caldwell down. To a new deal.
By D Lucian.. Posted May 10 2009 at 1:21 AM.
"no owen don't leave England again."
As Michael is Welsh and lives there, he leaves England after every game
By Keith Price.. Posted May 10 2009 at 12:53 AM.
Owen has no place at any club with his injury record ...what are these clubs thinking ? Can't blame him for milking it .
By vox pop.. Posted May 10 2009 at 12:38 AM.
no owen don't leave England again.
By kau.. Posted May 9 2009 at 11:57 PM.
Michael Owen's fitness record makes Craig Bellamy look positively athletic. Wouldn't touch him with a barge pole. His old man is a Celtic supporter so maybe there would be a bit of an emotional pull for him but, as much as we are suggested to be offering (and I don't buy it for a minute) he can earn so much more playing for a middling little premiership side in the land of milk and honey.
By Marko.. Posted May 9 2009 at 11:57 PM.
Makes Gary Caldwell look like pele with his scoring record. Irrelivent though, it's time to renew that season ticket. best go do it now before we sign Owen and they sell out eh...lol
By finner.. Posted May 9 2009 at 11:55 PM.
£50k a week 'pay-as-you-play'?
That'll be about £100k a year then...
By John.. Posted May 9 2009 at 11:54 PM.

By Paul.. Posted May 9 2009 at 11:36 PM.
This is just what we need, a proven EPL striker. Michel Owen would score for fun in the SPL, I hope we really do sign him as he would be the perfect partner for Samarass.
