Real's president-elect Florentino Perez was desperate to lure the Frenchman to Spain but the Gunners boss has decided to stay in England.
Wenger would have been handed a five- year deal which, with bonuses for winning the Champions League and La Liga, would have added up to almost £8m a year. He was also promised a free hand on recruitment by Perez, who also wanted him to eventually become Madrid's sporting director.
However, despite being flattered by the deal, Wenger has decided to stay put and will sign a new deal at the Emirates which will tie him to Arsenal for at least another three years.
That will also give him the platform to begin the restructuring work Wenger knows he needs to carry out on his latest Arsenal team - starting with the sale of Emmanuel Adebayor to AC Milan.
Wenger's current contract is up at the end of next season and the Arsenal board are anxious to get another deal in place as quickly as possible.
They were fully aware of Madrid's overtures to their manager and that Bayern Munich were also interested.
But they will now be delighted to discover Wenger has no plans to leave as the club prepares for its Champions League showdown with Manchester United.
He has always insisted he would never break a contract but influential members of the Arsenal hierarchy were concerned Wenger was simply running down his present deal. Now, however, they can start planning for the future safe, in the knowledge Wenger, 59, is still committed to the cause.
The search for new talent to bolster the Gunners squad is well under way with scouts monitoring Charlton teenger Jonjo Shelvey and 17-year-old Lille midfielder, Eden Hazard.
There are major funds at Wenger's disposal with Stan Kroenke, who became the club's major shareholder this week, making it clear there is around £40m in the transfer kitty.

wenger just leave let fresh blood flow in emiratres for the better of arsenalis
By chitui.. Posted May 9 2009 at 8:24 AM.
i think he is a good manager , as a way of his policy he should desist from being stubourn and buy good experince players and still nurtered d inexperince ones, he is a great manager of world class quality, and i thank him d kind of football artisery and quality displayed at d emirates.

Despite losing yesterday, I know AW is by far the best thing going for Arsenal. I respect the way he works with younger talent and doesn't just blatantly buy trophies. I guess Arsenal will just have to keep fighting till the perfect combination of young, injury free talent is found and they bring home the bacon. It has been done before. At least we have won the league in the last 10, or even 20 years...I can name a few clubs that havn't, it's not like we havn't had our chances of glory in resent times either.

This is the right time for Wnger to move because he is a seasonal failure who dos'nt want to buy players. Look at what has happen between ManU and Arsenal both home and away winning for ManU and how the supporters left the stadium without completion of t game, is a shame for such gunners boss. Try another club may be u can perform better. All hope losted because of one person. What a shame of gunner boss.

I tell anybody that cares to listen. If Arsene can buy a good defensive midfielde, two central defender and a ruthless attacker, prompt his players to shoot at goal and not pass around much inside the oponent's 18yard box, then Arsenal can do the treble

Am very happy to hear a Man supporter named ror describing Gigs, Van De Sar, Rio Ferdinand as man U babes. Where can he put Gibbs, Vela, Walcott. Ha, ha.
By david.. Posted May 5 2009 at 8:18 AM.
Arsene should consider himself very lucky if his team can win 2-1 against Fergie's babe tonite. I admire the professor but I'm sorry to say good bye again this time. Glory MU!

I think Mr.Wenger is a good manager. I hope so he stay at the Arsenal.

the players being knocked have all improved as the season has progressed, when played in his rightful position eboue is becoming more confident and showing that extra bit of intelligence that was lacking earlier in the season, walcotts only problem is his dodgy shoulder that has sidelined him only too many times, but if he can remain fit he will no doubt silence all his critics.
and who dares to say that song has not improved with each game!
the problem with toure is his relationship, or non relationship with gallas, let gallas go i say.
my only real doubt in the squad is a player nobody has so far mentioned.............denilson, though he`s had many outings, he doesn`t seem up to the standard required, i have seen no improvement in him at all.
almunia will be around for a long time yet, and , when he gains his uk citizenship may well become the new, and permanent for years to come england keeper.
arsenal are currently favourites with the bookies to beat man utd, i forecast a 2 or 3 nil win for the gunners. in arsen we trust!

the only positions that bothers me is the present back four,( apart for getting rid,the sooner the better, of ade,and walcott, yes he is only good for the hundred metres) i suggest that song and djourou should be kept as the two central defenders, onestly, even toure is rubbish, maybe you wont agree with me,but i think thats the best solution for our centre of defence.p s money helps, but it'snot guarantee of success.thanks mr.wenger for staying put.

i think arsel wenger will go 2 real b/c he gona lose this tuesday against united than no one gona like him in arsenal so he has to go for his good future in real madrid
By one united.. Posted May 3 2009 at 9:54 PM.
There was never a doubt that Wenger would stay, secondly one has to remember that the likes of Man U,Liverpool,Chelsea,Spurs,Man City and Villa has spent millions on new players. And Wenger has treated Arsenal's Money as his own and therefore reluctant to spend as easily as other managers who won't think twice about spending and wasting millions on players. After all it is not their money.
Instead, wenger has adopted a policy of developing young unknown talent into world class players. And for these 20 something players to have reached, the Q.F Carling Cup,Semi Final of F.A Cup & Champions League and unbeaten in the Premiership for 21 matches and achieving 4th place is an incredible feat. What is annoying is that the so called football pundits do not even realise what Arsenal have done this season.Instead singing the praises of clubs who have spent millions to be where they are today.Sure Man U,Liverpool and Chelsea with their millions will always win trophies, but can they do it Wenger's way.Don't think so.All the top clubs in the world have always bought themselves out of trouble.I am just glad that Wenger is Arsenal through and through. If it was not for Wenger,Arsenal would still be at Highbury. If it was not for Wenger's vision of how football should be played,i don't think the premiership would be what it is today.Wenger is simply the best.

Frankly, I'm thrilled to hear that AW is staying put am hoping that he use the 40M to bring in good center back and mid field palyers. I think we need need to improve the squard.
AW is a good Manager in my opinion gunners need to apply some strengthen in our style of play for the team to succeed, in Europe and England.
By gunnersbrain.. Posted May 3 2009 at 2:07 PM.
Arsene has got too much principles to move with a losing club made of a bunch of MOBSTERS. Anyway it is a crap team with crap players crap manager and crap fans and just lost 6 at home to their biggest rival Barca no way would he leave the Goners for that!
By red devil.. Posted May 3 2009 at 2:16 PM.
you go to school n then college then uni! then if your taught right and are mind set to make the big paper you will! us supporters we cant do better then these boys, they are the next gen of fooball, just wait and see, and once they perform, every supporter of every team will tune in to watch an arsenal match, becuase of the way they play, people that dont support us they still watch us.
have faith and all will be right!!.

When you look at total managerial skill in its completeness, you will see that it not only means bringing home silverware, but keeping the clubs finances (which are at the manager's disposal), above the danger mark... Arsene has been the one manager to ensure that he gets the best for the least amount of expenditures... Arsenal are a young side... They have the mental strength and ability to run riot on the field... and experience comes with exposure...which they are being given. Have patience my friends... all good things come to those who wait.... Arsene Knows!!!!

haha he wont go!! hes gonna stay put. our manager has done alot for us, he did his 1st job and that was to show he has the skills of making a football team, (the invicbles). now he gone to work on making the prefect team outa kids. and you can see they are doing the job. in defence we are weak, buh if gallas n toure would be in the right mind set they can be one of the best central defence. toure has showed us, and gallas has made some very important clearence, as for our rb n lb, well no1 can critise, id say they are the best in the world. france won the world up, buh it was wengers men who had the most influence in the matches. this time its Englands Time, he will not FAIL us one bit, we have the players, its just some of our players are to big headed, and i say the only way to win a game is if you play as a team, they have showed b4 they can do it. mr wenger your doing a good job. i have faith in our lads! and they will show there true qualites when the time is right, for now we must support and show support more. continues..

Wenger is GOD!! If you look at how much money spurs hav spent building a squad of players who are supposed to be great and are battling for relegation at christmas and compare it to the little money wenger spends you can see why he is a great manager! He has had little luck with injuries this season having key players out for a lot of the season but he has still managed to safely secure 4th. With a class striker to replace Ade and a solid defensive mid to let fabregas roam, Arsenal would be unstoppable!
By Ash.. Posted May 3 2009 at 12:19 PM.
I always think AW is for Ars and only Ars is suitable for him. So he should stay.
By Thohry.. Posted May 3 2009 at 12:27 PM.
get rid of greedy useless ade an his embarrasing but rare goal celebrations.we need 2 solid central defenders an 1 more decent striker.
By mark harris.. Posted May 3 2009 at 12:27 PM.
You have to ask yourselves beautiful football and no trophies under Wenger or crap football and trophies under George Graham. I know which one i would rather have.
By Mark.. Posted May 3 2009 at 12:09 PM.
aw please please please get rid of bentner, walcott, eboue, and ade, none of them would get into any other top side,i cannot see players like fabs hanging around much longer
By mazza.. Posted May 3 2009 at 12:14 PM.
Its great news for the Gooners....Nice one Mr Wenger!!
By tony c.. Posted May 3 2009 at 11:58 AM.
As an Arsenal Season Ticket holder the news that Arsene has had reported offers from Real Madrid & Bayern Munich proves we have a truly great manager. The news that he has a transfer kitty of £40m just makes me yawn. We have been here before. The close season spending will be proof of the Clubs backing. I won't hold my breath!
By T.M.Casey.. Posted May 3 2009 at 11:30 AM.
Why should Wenger leave when he is seeing the trees he worked for is giving fruit. If he goes he has to start again.
Now Wenger needs to only bring two establised central defenders to complete his jig saw puzzle. These will marshall his defence, the rest of the team is there, and can challenge any team .
But Arsenal need to win the league or Champ league to satisfy their supporters.

very smart option. Now kindly do something in regards to Ade and Bendner. The Ade/ AC milan issue is good bussiness!
By laban ashubwe.. Posted May 3 2009 at 10:11 AM.
Wenger is Arsenal. If he were to go there is no one that could replace him. There are other good managers sure but you only have to look at Chelski to see that any good manager doesn't always work, it has to be the right good manager. Who else would fit Arsenal?
By Fv.. Posted May 3 2009 at 9:31 AM.
Fantastic news, just like Benitez there is another 5 years that Arsenal will not win anything of importance, 5 years no trophies and this is a good thing ??? Amazing really.
By mark.. Posted May 3 2009 at 9:26 AM.
Great news!! Another 4-5 years of nothing!
Long live the whinger! ;0) COYS

i have just read this article and im so glad tha AW is staying here! he is one of the greatest managers ever, and i think that we do need him at Arsenals!! he really knows what he`s doing!!
By JOSEPH CAPELLO.. Posted May 3 2009 at 8:46 AM.
im very glad aw has decided to stay, i think he is one of the best managers in the game with out a dout, he dosent spend much money because we simply have not got it, so he makes do with what we got ,and when you look at the team if we had all our players fully fit i think we will be very hard to beat watch next season ,thanks aw you are simply the best,
By tim marshall.. Posted May 3 2009 at 8:18 AM.
the thing is AW is a very good manager as wd have seen. the thing that arsene and arsenal need is good frontmen and somehow good defenders, get rid of nick and some players that are not impressive...look for good finishers. i know for sure AW has not to go if has unfinished business with the gunners...it's time.
By treegamiagunna.. Posted May 3 2009 at 7:50 AM.
Arsene find unknown talent like Ade all the time. He cannot help it if their greed for money is bigger then their desire to develop. The Arsenal are sort of one or two players to take them back to the top again, but Arsene will find them. Just look how much Arshavin has brought to the team !
By paul.. Posted May 3 2009 at 7:48 AM.
useless players like song and walcott (amazing) obviously not an arsenal fan.
By steven johnson.. Posted May 3 2009 at 7:43 AM.
Arsenal must let Wenger go to Madrid (or anywhere else for that matter!). He has destroyed a winning team and replaced great players with all so rans. He is obsessed with nothing other than himself and has lost touch with reality. Arsenal are now in the fourth season without having won anything and will be out of the Champions League on Tuesday. Get rid of him and get a manager that can really develop the team rather than continue to play useless players like Bendtner, Eboue, Walcott and Song!
By Black Benzino.. Posted May 3 2009 at 7:05 AM.
As a Manchester fan, I just think he's simply class. One of the few great managers left.
By dradul.. Posted May 3 2009 at 6:23 AM.
He is a man of his words, a man of integrity and someone all managers should look up to and follow. But except for being a bit miserly. Perhaps Mr. Wenger should sign one or two big stars sometimes to plug the gaps in mid-field and maybe a good finisher like Karim Benzecma. Adebayor and Bendthner are just not good enough.
By paul.. Posted May 3 2009 at 4:35 AM.
His groundsman left for Madrid not long ago, and I think he will still follow....
By Pov.. Posted May 3 2009 at 4:23 AM.
speaking as a non-arsenal fan, have to say mr wenger has the most integrity in the game.
By peter.. Posted May 3 2009 at 1:42 AM.
Good move, why move to a team that gets destroyed at home by Barcelona?
By Martin.. Posted May 3 2009 at 1:12 AM.
Am chuffed to know that one of the best manager ever to grace the shore of the premier league football has decided to stay to further oversight the legendary work he has began @ d fc. On behalf of many fans, I will like to thank Mr.Wenger for his scrupulous philosphy, integrity and artistry style of football you have certainly instilled upon new array of talents you ave arraigned for the near foreseeable years of global dominance.
