At four under par, the 14-time Grand Slam tournament champ bogeyed only one hole - but still looks too far adrift to mount a challenge - even by his standards.
The 33-year-old said: "I have never battled harder around a golf course to make a score.
"Making a double bogey on the first hole and three-putting put me behind the eight-ball immediately but, man, I fought hard to get it back. That was a hell of a fight.
"I'm proud of the fact that I've got myself back into the tournament. Obviously, I need help from here, however. If Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell come two or three shots back early in the final round, I still have a chance.
"If they manage to gain strokes quickly, they can put themselves out of reach. I didn't hit the ball as precisely as I needed to today and just fought my ass off to get it back, just to shoot a number."
Woods birdied three, nine, 13, 15 and 17 and made his only bogey on the 11th hole.
