But the England star now he reckons he is in top shape and hitting peak form since joining AC Milan on loan.
Beckham has become an integral part of Fabio Capello's plans again and has fixed his sights on next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.
And although he will be back in the States this summer he reckons his unique "timeshare" deal with Milan will keep him in the England squad.
Beckham said: "I feel very fit and sharp. Since I've moved to Milan it has sharpened me up as a player and I've got my fitness back.
"That makes it easier and better for me when I'm playing at this level for England. I've always said that when I've got my fitness there I'll perform and I've got it."
"My match sharpness is the biggest thing, I've seen that since I came back to Milan.
"I've enjoyed myself so much since I've been in Milan and I hope that continues.
"I'm back in LA until the end of November and then back in Europe at Milan playing there, so my fitness won't go in 10 games in the MLS.
"I'm looking forward to going back and playing the rest of that season and then when December comes I'll be back in Milan playing at the highest level.
"I just want to be part of every England squad that gets called up and if I continue playing at the highest level then hopefully that will continue."

It's all about money, Beckham has become a huge money making brand and I suspect his cameo appearances for England are all part of the deal. Money talks the England team, the World Cup and above all the fans come last.
Keep buying the shirts, Beckham needs the money!!!!!

Comments like Dekkos annoy me, in a time when there are so many players who show no pride in wearing the england shirt here we are with a player who shows the kind of grit and determination to come back time after time to play for his country and not only play but play with passion, like rob im looking forward to seeing him in South Africa 2010

Have you ever wondered how Beckham seems to have a team writing his wonders on any blog you care to look at,they the team of writers, aim to glorify his ability to play the game, for sure the Guy is past his best and should exit the game gracefully, but to read the comments posted you would think he's the best player on the field.
England must start forming a team from scratch otherwise we will be out of it again, perhaps Pearce can push a few of his young chaps up the ladder to the first team, or do we have lots of tears and blaming everyone all over again like so many times before.

A true professional keeps his level high no matter where he plays, wether its the Galaxy or Milan. Pretty obvious he didnt give it his all while with the Galaxy something i cant say about Lungberg,he should be the man Beckham was supposed to be.True professional and could still play for Sweden if he wanted to. Unlike Becks he will actually make his team better because he wants to.Game and effort wont change because hes in MLS,why would it? Your supposed to give it your all for the game because you love it and the fans. Becks is in it for the $$$$ .

Mole, you say that England have won nothing with David Beckham. At least we always qualified with him in the side.Look what happened when Steve McClaren in his infinite wisdom decided to drop Becks from the England squad. We did really well in Euro 08.Ooops,I forgot,we did not even qualify did we? And apart from the late great Bobby Moore, what other England Captain has done so much better?Oh,and Decco, becks has actually scored more then one goal in Milan, and if he was so bad in Madrid ,Why did Capello bring him back into the team? Or do you think you know so much more then Capello and Ancelotti?

dekko if you follow football like you say you do, you would have known that becks first season at madrid he played his best football. his last season at madrid beckham helped them win the league. they were struggling. as soon as capello restored becks to the starting line they start winning. go and have look at the stats if you dont belive me. becks might not have all the skill in the world like messi and ronaldo but he got 1 very important attribute as a footballer. he is a match winner. scoring the winner himself or providing the killer pass.

dekko, you're spot on !!!! rest of you need not say more.

And to "dekko": You are really deluded. Everything you say contradicts reality, I won't even bother typing anything more than this.

Can't believe that so many people in here are having a go at Beckham. For all the glamour and jet-set life during his career, he still manages to play at the highest lever. Most people would fade away on the pitch, but this guy is 33 and when playing for England it's like his very life depends on it. For all it's worth he shows determination only a few players within the England squad can show for, and he can still deliver pin-point crosses. He will be a nice card for Capello to pull from up his sleeve during the World Cup. As long as Capello, a world class coach, still sees Beckham as good enough for the squad that's really the ONLY thing that counts, not what you and I think.

Over paid over rated, like his plastic wife! Roony Ronalldo and the rest of the squad are far better players now, he has had his day,he should get a job with the wife,, I never knew what all the fuss was about him anyway.

Typical innit? This man wears his heart on the sleeve for club and country, but it's never enough for some idiots just cuz they're too brainwashed by the fans of cheap trickery and useless skill.
Listen up - the tricks and skills ain't worth it if it doesn't win a ball for the team or create a goal. This man puts his country before his family, else he wouldn't have moved again from LA to Milan, with a pay cut, and pay nearly 7million to function the move.
You seen him with the ball? Runs around all over the pitch looking for it and provides vital touches and passes. he was never pacy, but speed alone does jack all, if you don't have the eye for a spearing pass.
Plus Capello is not dandy, he's got proper taste of Becks' passion both at Real Madrid and now at England. Name me one more player who's been dropped by both club and country, but continues to work and makes them bite their words later on. Beckham made both Capello AND McLaren do that.
So Beckham slaggers - know what you're talking about before yapping just cuz you can.

If it wasnt for beckham on wednesday night the second goal wudnt have come... Ok beckham is a big celebrity or superstar waheva u wana call him, but he is actuali the best at what he does (setpieces, passes) no one can match that.. Give the man some respect for all he has done for the england team and stop the slagging off.
By Barry Down.. Posted April 5 2009 at 2:26 PM.
Funny that Beckham, says he was at his best in LA, didn't he say that in Spain too? Thing is I can't remember him ever winning a single match with either team. Basically he's all ballast and bilge, he can't play football, he just likes to run about like an idiot and look like he's doing something good.

People just love to knock Becks don't they? Previous poster 'dekko' clearly knows nothing about football but that's ok. People posting negative comments on message boards about Beckham rarely do.
Beckham's loyalty to his country puts his fellow professionals to shame - players who have turned their backs on their country to maintain their 5 and 6 figure weekly salary for a couple more years. Far from making England 'less fluent' when he comes on, Beckham's presence can have a steadying influence and his right foot could shell peas.
It's about time Beckham was hailed as the England football hero he clearly is. He's scored crucial goals for England many times, is the only England player to score in three World Cups and has never once lost his passion for England despite being treated disgustingly at times by so called England fans and management.
If only there were more like him......
By harry.. Posted April 5 2009 at 12:45 PM.
dekko you are an idiot, you say beckham has done nothing to influence england in world cup. how about his last minute goal against greece that took us to the worl cup or when he scored in the knock out stages against ecuador when no one looked like scoring. think before you speak!
beckham still world class...don't think he deserves to be ahead of the lkes of A.young or J.Cole but he is still a superb substitute with his delivery
By Chris.. Posted April 5 2009 at 12:12 PM.
typical England fans slaaging off one of their most loyal of players-
By mole.. Posted April 5 2009 at 10:00 AM.
becks takes free kicks and corner kicks, and he sweats like a pig,,,,,,,as the previous letter states we have won nowt with him.
By dekko.. Posted April 5 2009 at 9:11 AM.
ye "becks", youve still "got it". That "genius" that has seen you gone 13 years without scoring an england goal at wembley, 5 wash-out tournaments where you managed to impact none of them and not alot else bar an unprecedented avalanche of PR spin. Dreadful at madrid, one early goal at milan and nothing since and once again we see a poorer, less fluent england side when Beckhams in it. When Walcott returns this celebrity footballer is nothing but a back-up- at best.
By rob.. Posted April 5 2009 at 4:05 AM.
Well done Becks. You'll get the naysayers on here before long talking about you selling out but your loyalty to your country is outstanding. You may have lost a little pace but you've still got immense skill. We'll look forward too seeing you as an impact super sub in South Africa.
