The Gunners boss has virtually accepted defeat in his bid to sign Everton's Mikel Arteta and has turned his attention to in-form Ireland.
Wenger raised his interest in the City midfielder when Eastlands boss Mark Hughes made an inquiry for Arsenal's Kolo Toure.
The Arsenal boss was given no encouragement that Ireland would be made available. But he could use Toure as bait in a player plus cash exchange bid to tempt City to sell.
Meanwhile Wenger has backed Sir Alex Ferguson in his claim the Premier League fixtures are UNFAIR.
United have played nine away games and Arsenal eight. Wenger said: "Liverpool have played at home eight times and Chelsea six. It is unfair. For once, I agree with Sir Alex!"

arsenal need ireland the only good player man city have is ireland so hes better off at an actually GOOD club and arsenal is that club face it they can spalsh the cash but can they play the football the premier leauge table says no nuff said ireland needs to go to arsenal MAN CITY ARE GONNA GET RELEGATED AND NO RONALDHINIO OR KAKA OR MESSI CAN HELP THEM NOW.
By lilgooner. Posted January 5 2009 at 5:49 PM.
PURE ARROGANCE - thats why the majority of football fans want City to fail.
When you have idiots like Andy R representing you, the future is bleak.
You lot need a proper reality check because it was not that long ago that you were desperate for a buyer because you were so bad or should I say dire.
The sooner you return to the championship the better, that way I dont have to read the drivel so oftenly posted by Muppet supporters.
By Arsenal4Life. Posted January 4 2009 at 7:57 PM.
Plastic City fans. Splash the cash and you think you are all that. Languishing at the bottom of the table, nuff said! Chelskie splashed the cash, and everybody hated them. You city supporters slating the Arsenal are just Muppets with your fake Sheik table clothes. You are one of the despised, not because of who you are but by what you have become - ARROGANT

As a Gooner I would love Stephen Ireland and/or Arteta-they would be class additions. But I don't see it happening. They could be tempted by Arsenal because of our class, football mentality, and CL football (which neither city or everton will ever accomplish). The only setbacks would be that Hughes would no doubtly loose his job if he sold Ireland and Moyes is no fool. Arsene should just do what he does best and go search France, Africa, or even Italy for a proven-unknown (oxymoron-i know). One thing is for certain, if anyone knows the Arsenal club, they rarely make more than 1-2 additions in the january transfer window-hell they rarely make 2 all year long, but this window he will come good with new players. city may well be crap at the moment, but with all their money if they sell Ireland they may as well close the ground down, ( and by the way he is DEFINITELY IRISH) because it would show that they have no real intent EVER to really improve the club. Ok Hughes is struggling at the moment, but remember he's only been there 6 months and also remember Fergie at United was struggling for 4 years before he got it right. As always it's "hit the panic button". But what hughes Must do is get rid of some of the dead wood such as Jo.Elano, Caceido Ben-Haim,Hamman, Vassell. And get back some of our long term injuries,Petrov, Bojinov, Johnson. We have the flair what we need now is a bit of "backbone". Go for it Hughsie, I know given time we'll get there.

city going places? u city lot are just as dumb and ignorant as the red side and mancland. the only place city are going is the championship and out of the FA cup hahaha. a average club like city should feel blessed to have a player like ireland playing for them and should respect it when your only good player wants to move to play for one of the greatest clubs in the world to better his career.
By james. Posted January 4 2009 at 3:13 PM.
So George ....City are on the up and Arsenal are on the down? It used to be united i hated...but u guys are pushing it close....you're chasing dreams. Kaka, Messi, Villa, Fabregas, Ronaldo were your targets weren't they? but realistically its gonna be Bridge and Parker hahaha..cant see similarities there.
By Leon. Posted January 4 2009 at 3:07 PM.
I love you city fans. You've got a bit of money, and your calling yourselfs one of the big clubs !! What have you done this season. I'll tell you what you've done. NOTHING !! Money don't buy class. And your money won't go nowhere. We'll buy Ronaldo, Messi, Van Persi, Gerrard. But who came. None of them. All these players know your a flash in the pan. Have fun with Wayne Bridge. And get used to that type of player. National Players. You'll Never get WORLD CLASS Players. No matter how much you offer. Robinho will be gone by the summer. lol

The equation is simple, if Ireland demand a move Hughes can do nothing but allow him to go.
These days players/Agents decide where they play and not the manager.
By eboateng. Posted January 4 2009 at 10:55 AM.
Arsenal have the money, they just don`t spend it like lunatics. Other teams spend money that they don`t have because they`re depending on banks and sugar daddies.
Arsenal have money because the club makes a profit and is in a fine financial situation. They could surprise everyone and buy someone like Ireland, if Wenger feels we need someone. Which we do. Arsene knows.
By Andrew. Posted January 4 2009 at 11:18 AM.
Stephen Ireland is Irish.Hopefully he'l come back playing for the national side now that he's gotten over the death of his 3 grandmothers and pet turtle.
I'd love to see Ireland at the the gunners but I can't see Hughes selling his best player this season.Especially with the relegation battle Citeh have ahead of them this year!
By Neimad. Posted January 4 2009 at 1:19 PM.
IF HUGHES LETS IRELAND GO HE NEEDS HIS HEAD TESTING EVEN MORE THAN I THOUGHT.AFTER YESTERDAY ITS HUGHES THAT SHOULD BE SHOWN THE DOOR AT CITY AND ALOT OF THE PLAYERS TOO, SORRY DUNNE,JO,ELANO,BALL,VASSELL ITS TIME TO DROP DOWN A DIVISION
By jay. Posted January 4 2009 at 12:51 PM.
This is a proper transfer target! He would be ace. We need wide players more that anything. Sign him up Arsene!
By TT. Posted January 4 2009 at 12:13 PM.
I think ireland is a very good player and would be a great signing if we got him but i dont think we will...i think wenger will get some a couple thats like 19 and train them up lol thats more his style...we need 2 very good players in the transfer window then i think we are sorted
By George. Posted January 4 2009 at 10:37 AM.
ha ha ha stephan ireland going to the arsenal. 3 reasons why it wont happen, 1. he's older than 19
2. he'd cost more than £6m and 3. Man City will be on the up next year, arsenal are on a downward slide.
i reckon Ireland would go on to be a legend at the emirates as his style is badly needed by the arsenal midfield but he'd be a fool to join them now.
By mousey. Posted January 4 2009 at 10:40 AM.
irelands british so he wont even get on the bench.
you wont win anything with arsenal wenger, just coz his name fits buch of losers
By ryan. Posted January 4 2009 at 10:38 AM.
If Mark Hughes sells Stephen Ireland then i will personally get the job done myself.
By Moonarmy. Posted January 4 2009 at 8:12 AM.
I just love Arsene's sense of humour. I think though that most City fans would be happy for him to take Elano though but even then Arsene would only want a loan deal because Arsenal are strapped for cash see. Kerchingggg
By City Slicker. Posted January 4 2009 at 7:47 AM.
Do Arsenal have the kind of money to buy a player like Ireland? I think they are better off looking at the Barcelona youth team for another player because Arteta and Ireland are unrealistic targets.
By Scott. Posted January 4 2009 at 4:53 AM.
hahaha! yeah...why would you wnna move fomr a club that is going places(despite their loss to forstest today, give them 18 months and the will be top4) to a club who have Song in midfield, lol! DONT MAKE ME LAUGH! AHAHAHA,OOOOPS ALREADY TOO LATE!
By will h. Posted January 4 2009 at 3:07 AM.
Having stephen is a good ideal but I don't think Hughes would sell cos he's the best player in city so far.
By Waysco. Posted January 4 2009 at 3:54 AM.
I stand corrected, hes irish. (should have guessed by his name!) The point i was making is Arsenal dont exactly buy many british/irish (local) players.
By shane.. Posted January 4 2009 at 2:22 AM.
For me Ireland's been the best player in the league this season and his technique has come on leaps and bounds. I think he could come in for Cesc for the remainder of the season and he can play in a number of positions, which Wenger loves. Another plus is he doesn't always go on International duty. I wouldn't mind either him or Arteta joining us, along with someone like Yaya or Inler.
By Baldy . Posted January 4 2009 at 1:59 AM.
I hope Stevie Ireland isnt involved in a deal to bring toure to city has it would weaken the city has he is the most improved player this season and citys best player
By kev . Posted January 4 2009 at 1:44 AM.
Hughes will get lynched if he sells him ......
By andy. Posted January 4 2009 at 1:24 AM.
shane? 3rd biggest club? whos 2nd? do no say tottenham, cos if u do u no nothing about football? and y wont he move? Arsenal have more of a chance winning something this season then City do.
By zee. Posted January 4 2009 at 1:07 AM.
maybe he would move from "richest club in the world to the 3rd biggest club in London?" cos Man city lost 3-0 to Nott'm forest?
By jhon stoner. Posted January 4 2009 at 12:51 AM.
ireland will come arsenal if he has the opportunity. why would he stay at a club fighting relegation and im sure he's like to be playing in the chanps league with class players!
By Luke . Posted January 4 2009 at 12:48 AM.
Just to correct the last comment.
Stephen Ireland, is not English, he is Irish.
It would be a good move for him, not sure Mark Hughes, would sell him , he's been City's best player, this season.
By Sean. Posted January 4 2009 at 12:45 AM.
Why wouldn't you want to go from a club in the a relegation battle, who got knocked out of the cup by a lower league side. To a club who are contending for a champions league place, are still in the cup and the champions league this season, one reason, sucess!!
By Finley. Posted January 4 2009 at 12:43 AM.
Stephen Ireland is, believe it or not, Irish, not English and there is more chance of Vassell winning the Balloon d'or than Ireland ever leaving Manchester City, absolutely NO chance
By Real Mancs Are Blue. Posted January 4 2009 at 12:28 AM.
Stephen ireland is English.I think that breaks an Arsenal squad rule.
By Shane.. Posted January 3 2009 at 11:59 PM.
hahaha, as if. Why would anyone move from the richest club in the world to the 3rd biggest club in London?
By JamoT. Posted January 3 2009 at 11:55 PM.
Yeh right!! and city will sell Ireland to Arsenal. Dream on
By steve. Posted January 3 2009 at 11:49 PM.
HAHAHA ireland for toure?
We know ireland can play. toure might not for us.
You cant make hughes sell his hardest working player no matter how bad at tactics and player posistioning he may be!
