George Michael reveals his wedding plans, and we take a look at why, despite his recent troubles, he’s still a sell-out performer

By Kasie Davies

It’s been 21 years since George Michael last headlined Wembley Stadium with his Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley for their last-ever gig together.

But the singer is now putting his recent drug-driving admission behind him and is heading back to Wembley for the biggest moment of his career.

Over two nights, George will make history by becoming the first singer ever to play the newly-rebuilt Stadium, performing hits like Careless Whisper and Fast Love from his 25-year career in front of a massive 180,000 fans.

This time George is doing it on his own – although he does have long-term partner Kenny Goss waiting in the wings.

You finish touring in July, so is a summer wedding on the cards?

When this tour is over and everything has died down we can think about that. Like me, Kenny wants our day to be special. I’d take no pleasure in entering a civil partnership if there was any publicity around it.

Will stepping on stage again give you a big kick?

I’m a performer, so I love to play in front of a crowd, but I’m actually happiest in bed with Kenny and the dogs at the end of the evening. I enjoy the simple things.

You turn 44 this month. How have you been preparing to go back on tour?

I’ve been training three days a week for nine months in my gym at home. I’ve even quit smoking because I need to be as energetic as possible on stage. But I still smoke cannabis – although not as much as I used to.

The Beckhams have been making moves to conquer America. How about you?

I plan to tour America next, then I’m involved with a big TV drama called Eli Stone with Jonny Lee Miller. The writers are naming each episode after my songs and I’m writing some new music for it.

Will you be recording any new music?

I charge £3million for private gigs which means I can release music free for my fans. I’m like Robin Hood!

George plays Wembley on June 9 and 10.
