We are crowned paper of the year

THE News of the World is Britain's Newspaper Of The Year.

We swept the board this week at The Real Press Awards 2002, picking up 16 trophies including Scoop of the Year and Front Page of the Year.

At a ceremony in London's Grosvenor House hotel on Tuesday, one of the judges said: "Tonight is about honouring stories that set the agenda for others to follow, journalism that people talk about. And there was only one paper in this competition."

The full list of Real Press Awards we collected, besides Newspaper of the Year, is:

Reporter of the Year: Our investigations editor Mazher Mahmood.

Scoop of the Year: Mazher again, who picked up the award with Conrad Brown for the Sophiegate Tapes that exposed royal business practices.

UK Press Gazette, regarded by many as the bible of the industry, said: "Britain's favourite Sunday has done the Palace and the people a valuable service."

Front Page of the Year: The historic Page 1, created by Peter Smith and Danny Fox, that recorded England's superb 5-1 win over Germany.

Showbiz Columnist of the Year: Rav Singh.

Political Columnist of the Year: Chris Buckland.

Royal Editor of the Year: Clive Goodman.

Critic of the Year: Ally Ross.

Political Reporter of the Year: Ian Kirby.

Photographer of the Year: Conrad Brown

Sports Reporter of the Year: Jim Keat.

The Cudlipp Award: Phil Taylor and Paul Nicholas for their best-seller Barrymore: A Man Possessed.

Team of the Year: Stuart Kuttner and Hayley Barlow for our For Sarah campaign.

Magazine of the Year: Sunday mag edited by Judy McGuire.

Newspaper supplement of the Year: Score, edited by Head of Sport Mike Dunn.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Robert Warren, who has worked as our News Editor then Executive Editor for over a quarter of a century.
