"But even though I fancy men, I still fancy WOMEN too."
The Blue singer's revelation will stun his millions of female fans worldwide plus the dozens of women he has been linked with, including Geri Halliwell, Tara Palmer Tomkinson, Martine McCutcheon and ex-Big Brother winner Kate Lawler.
But on the eve of the boyband's reunion tour, the handsome singer says it is time for him to let his fans know the truth.
In an emotional interview with the News of the World he said: "I was living a secret life. I went through a process of asking what the f*** am I?
"Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi? That's why I was so frightened about talking. Now, in my early 30s, I know who I am and I'm proud of who I am. I don't want to hide anymore.
"I don't feel I should launch a big comeback with Blue hiding this - I don't want to go back to the time in the band when I felt I had to keep certain things quiet. I want to be OUT and say I've had relationships with men as well as women.
"So doing this interview gives me the ability to go forward."
Strict Catholic Duncan, 31, first fell in love with a man EIGHT years ago - at the height of Blue's fame. Since then he has been with men and women, and fathered a daughter with his ex-girlfriend Claire Granger. But it took him years to confess his sexuality to the most important people in his life - Claire, 32, the other Blue stars and his mum.
Dunc said: "I wanted to be able to say to someone, 'This is going on and I don't know what to do,' but I was too SCARED.
"My mother was the closest person to me. But I didn't know how to tell her because I wanted her to love me and accept me. I was really paranoid and emotional.

"I flew her to Los Angeles for a holiday. I was thinking about it the whole trip - it was building up in my head.
"I'd never talked to my mum about sex and relationships. It was quite a taboo subject because we came from a Catholic upbringing.
"One night towards the end of the trip, I knocked on my mum's door before she went to bed. I was looking down and avoiding her eyes. I said, 'I need to talk to you'.
"She said, 'Oh my God, what's wrong, are you all right?'
"I responded, 'I need to tell you something. I've been in a relationship with a guy and I'm really confused about it. I haven't been able to talk to anyone for a couple of years.'

"She hugged me and couldn't believe it. She said, 'I thought you were going to tell me you were dying or something. Hundreds of people have had things with guys as well as girls. I love you, that doesn't matter to me.'
"We were flooded with tears. It had come out. I'd told my mum and she still loved me. I went up to my room after and sat on my bed crying. I realised, 'I can do this.' It gave me the strength to start opening up to my close friends." Duncan then told bandmates, Simon Webbe, Lee Ryan and Anthony Costa.
He recalled: "I thought there might be weirdness but there wasn't. All of the boys accepted it. We were perceived as lads who went around and slept with women but on the inside we had a lot of love for each other. We always hugged and kissed each other.
"I told Simon first. He went straight away, 'Is that all you're worried about? I love you man. That's cool. You're not alone. It doesn't change anything for us.'
"I spoke to Lee next then Ant. They were really supportive too. After that I actually felt quite comfortable with myself."
Duncan's first relationship with a man was in 2001, the year the band were celebrating their first three No1 hits - All Rise, Too Close and If You Come Back.
He said: "I'd never been intimate with a man. I'd been quite happy having girlfriends.
"But I met a guy. He was my friend at first but we took the friendship to the next level.
"Up until that point I'd never had those feelings towards a guy before. But this person came into my life and put a spanner in the works. I definitely loved him. It was my first experience like that.
"I never believed I could have those feelings for a guy. It had been so closed to me being a strict Catholic."
Duncan was also desperate to hide the relationship because of his status as one of pop's biggest heartthrobs. He explained: "When you're a young band trying to be successful, there's a lot of pressure on you to be clean-cut and accessible to your female fans.
"And it might sound greedy but I genuinely was enjoying having women throwing themselves at us.
"Yes, I was labelled a womaniser and yes, I did sleep with a lot of women. But there were tell-tale signs I was that way inclined. I've always been very theatrical and loved being on stage.
"I was so confused about everything. Blue were becoming more and more successful. I felt frightened. I bottled it in and didn't tell anyone. It was almost like it didn't happen.
"I was having relationships with girls as well. This was a secret on the side. In hindsight, that wasn't the way to deal with it. It's not nice to treat people in that way."

The only other boyband star who had confessed he wasn't straight was Boyzone's Stephen Gately, who revealed in 1999 he was gay.
But just as Duncan was thinking about coming out to his fans in 2004, girlfriend Claire told him she was expecting his baby. She fell pregnant when they briefly rekindled their relationship after splitting up.
However, Duncan was scared that if the public knew he was bisexual, their child would get teased at school.
He recalled: "I'd had very high-profile relationships. They weren't frauds or cover-ups. They were real.
"I loved Claire. It wasn't an immaculate conception!
"The first thing I did when she rang me up and told me she was pregnant was say, 'I need to sit you down and tell you about EVERYTHING.' I had to be completely honest with her.
"She was amazing and said, 'I love you for who you are. Regardless of what your sexual feelings are, I know you would be a great dad. Bringing up our daughter is the most important thing.' But it was tough during the pregnancy.
"I think she wondered how this was going to affect our daughter when she was a little bit older.
"Would she get bullied in the playground because her daddy slept with guys or was bisexual? All of those things went through her head and mine, if I was honest.
"But we decided it was no longer about a sexual relationship between us and instead about a strong bond to bring up our daughter."
Their little girl, Tianie-Finne James, is now four years old - and Duncan has a good relationship with Claire, who's found love with someone else.
Plus he isn't so scared about his daughter knowing who he is. "I hope when she grows up she is accepting of her daddy," he said.
Duncan - born in Salisbury, Wilts - is currently single and hoping to find love . . . with a man OR woman.
He said: "Being bisexual as a man is a taboo subject but I'm 100 per cent happy with who I am.
"If I have a connection with someone on a deep level that is what it's about for me.
"And if I'm with someone then I am monogamous.
"I'm sure a lot of gay people would be put off by the thought of having sex with a woman. It's not like that for me. I still find women attractive.
"In a man or a woman I look for someone who is sensitive and caring. I like someone who has nice features too.
"I don't feel it's harder to be with a guy. This has been my life now for a long time. It's not a big deal to me anymore. But I've slept with way more women than men.
"I can still look at women now and think they're sexy. I love being intimate with a woman, I love breasts. I do think girls can be a lot more emotional.
"I know most gay guys think, 'Bi Now, Gay Later' and maybe one day the thought of being with a woman won't work for me.
"But likewise, maybe the thought of being with a guy might be the same. I might want to settle down with a girl to have a family lifestyle. That appeals to me too.
"Mainly I just want to be happy. I want to be in a long-term relationship and, most importantly, be in love."
In the meantime Duncan - who was in ITV's Dancing on Ice after Blue split in 2005 - is concentrating on preparing for Blue's greatest hits tour, which starts next year.
Afterwards the band are heading back to the studio to record a new album to rival their previous ones All Rise and One Love.
Duncan says he is ready to face the spotlight again - this time with fans knowing his secret.
He mused: "I think this is going to shock a lot of people. Obviously there are some who aren't going to like it.
"But I'm not going to be rubbing this in the public's face because that's not who I am. I don't want to offend anybody.
"But I'm at a place where I'm finally comfortable with myself after 31 years.
"I'm ready to be honest, not just to myself but to all the fans and everyone who's been there for me."
He added: "People can say what they want. Everybody's different. I don't think there is a black and white here.
"Everyone has different attractions to people. This is just the way that I am."

I missed this back in July!
It's good that it's a bit of a non story as it shows things have moved on and people rightly accept it as normal.
I find the idea that you can "tell" someone's sexuality offensive though. His interest in theatre has nothing to do with who he fancies!

Thats amazing I never thought Duncan was bi, thats interesting news! I think that it's great news because it shows that there are men out there in this world that are scared to admit they are gay or bi and people like Duncan give people the strength to tell people who they truelly are. It's sometimes difficult for men to admit there true feelings and very inspirational that Duncan admited this truth. Weldone buddy :D x

Duncan,
Thank you for coming out as a bi man. Yes, bisexuals exist. And it is not a case of Bi now, gay later. So all you haters whether gay or straight can stick it.

Hi duncan mate,
just came across a story about you being bisexual. i like to say that i am very shocked by your sexuality and happy for you at the same time. it takes real courage for you to come out. just be yourself do what makes you happy and never care what people think of you. at the end of the day you are a human being with feelings and able to think and breathe and have the right to speak your own mind. best of luck and hopefully find someone who loves you the way you are....god bless

Well Duncan. As a 24 yr old man who has recently accepted that he likes men; I know exactly how you feel. Your sexuality is such a big part of you that it cant be hiden because it is uncontrollable. I'm happy you came out cos ur being true to yourself. To be honest I had no idea . I actually thought that you were one of those typical egostistical str8 men. I remember watching you on the Blind Date afew years ago and thinking. Hmm this guy is quite nice.. I never knew he ws this good looking - but no point dreaming he's as str8t as they come.Guess was I wrong.Ur available now though! ;-).

I handed you a microphone to sing a song for the guesses, unfortunatly it is not a very good quality one. But your voice still good. I like you a lot and happy that u know who u are now, not like me I'm still finding who am I. I've never fell in love with guy but once with a girl 7 years ago. i'm 27 bisexual and i've just told a couple of friends and my brother and sister. So duncan i think you have given hope to us all i only hope people can stop being so homophobic as doesn't everyone deserve the right to live there own life there way it would be a dull world if everyone was the same. As for the MJ comments yes he was a good singer and was a shame he died but get over it don't start dissing duncan for been who he is . as plenty of people like myself never dissed MJ when all the accusations were going round . Hope you find happiness in your life Duncan and hope that by a celebrity like you admitting your bisexual it will help other people be able to come out (I've liked you since Blue first came on the scene years ago)
By andrew.. Posted July 14 2009 at 11:05 PM.
Ok, I (along many other people) are a huge fan of Duncan, always have been and still am. Basically all you people who clearly say ''you dont give a poo its all for publicity''...well evidently you wouldnt waste 5minuets out of ur pathetic life to post such ridiculous comments...does it look like a give an absoloute flyin funani whether u dont ''date white men?'' No.
Fact of the matter is, Duncan is talented, a wonderful father and just an overall great guy...and YES he has done alot for charity...so for all you saddos who know jack about him i suggest u keep ur mouth shut when u know nothin about him.
His sexuality doesnt change who he is at all...it just makes him human. Thats how people are...Duncan i love you i think ur amazing and dont even listen to these fag heads who think ''its for publicity'' and yeah it is very sad about MJ but in no way whatso ever is he tryna ''steal the limelight'' get a life.
Duncan I LOVE YOU!!!!

I'm a 48 year old man who only came out to family and friends within the last two years.
I've never been married, but came from a working class family in Glasgow.
In that community, to admit being gay when I was younger would have had so much stigma that i couldn't have coped.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay or bi, it is only a part of your 'make up' as a human being. But not everyone sees it like that.
Today things are a lot 'easier' for people coming to terms with their sexuality (although not easy for all), but it seems more acceptable for young people which is great and the way it should be.
I firmly believe that dna holds the key and social environment can cultivate ur sexuality. But i also believe that there is a 'swing-o-meter' of sexuality in everyone. From 100% straight to 100% gay. Who has the right to judge?
As long as whatever you are, and whoever you are, you can be the best you can be in whatever walk of life and be happy and healthy in your personal life.
It's great that people who have a voice, whether pop stars, actors, polititians can talk freely about their lives and be open and in turn help people who are struggling to cope.
I will never be a 'singing from the rooftops, out and proud' type of gay man, but I am finally comfortable with who I am.
Good luck Duncan - all will be fine!!!
By lebigmac.. Posted July 13 2009 at 1:55 PM.

Does anyone really care about a has-been 'popstar'. We are still grieving for MJ and here is a wannabe craving attention. My advice to DJ, go and do some charity work (like super-philanthropist MJ who contributed phenomenal amounts of money) and I might just applaud you a little.

Never heard of this guy before Perez Hilton posted this article on his page. Great story. I applaud him for being brave and honest. I too had a similar experience. In our society being bisexual is totally fine if you're a woman. However when a man admits it, the rules suddenly change. Sexuality is not a black and white issue! When are people going to realize this? It's nice to finally see an intelligent, attractive, masculine guy like Duncan James come forth with his story.

Bit of a contradiction here that the NOFTW describes him as a "strict Catholic" - yet in the same paragraph states he has relationships with men and women outside of marriage and has fathered a child......... Yeah - really strict!!! Some people want their cake and eat it

Duncan, I think half of the world's inhabitants today have a varying amount of gay potential in them. For some it is so physically powerful that it cant be overlooked. For others it is a driving force in their daily lives, while for others it is such that they can not be unsympathetic to it. Others can ignore those tendencies. It is a horrible and blatant lack of knowledge to hate someone because of their sexuality. Therefore, who gave us the rights to tell Mother Nature how to multiply her diversity among us? We must remember that Gods law is transparent

Brave guy, totally take my hat off to him. I've recently struggled with the fact I'm bisexual too....good luck to him, I really respect the bloke for being so open and honest...he's just admitting what a lot of men never do.
By Paul.. Posted July 13 2009 at 3:21 AM.
i applaud duncan for coming out as bi-sexual however i believe being bi-sexual or gay is suhx a minor thing now that i wonder why this is news worthy. so what if duncan has feeling for guys? i know that i do, haha.
i think the hidden agenda here is for publicity, blue are going to release a new album and will tour soon so similarily with to take that they will attract to a gay audience which will bring a large revenue. behind the scenes in media industries homosexuality is an extremely strong theme which is also covertly applied to audiences. By 'coming out' blue's fan base has now increased.
i just hope that other celebrities will come out, especially footballers theres bound to be a fair few in the premier league, shame that industry wouldnt accept that though, however the music industry has fewer boundaries.
good on ya duncan for coming out

im a 50+ bloke,(totally straight),from the north-east of england, hard as nails and as rough as a badgers ar*e,yeah,ok,a 'mans man' from the rougher end of the country, where men are men and sheep **** themselves, but so wot if duncan likes blokes as well as women?,did u like him because he was a womans man?,did u like him because he was a mans man?,-no!,u liked him because he was a good singer in a good band, and still is so wot the ****!---let people live there own lives and as long as he doesnt try to corrupt your son or daughter,(which 99.999% of gay/bi people dont even attempt),leave the bloke alone n enjoy his music!!!!---btw-do you know how much money and awareness duncan has raised for worthy causes in the u.k. alone?,nah,i didnt think you did,so leave him alone and get on with your own perfect(?) little lives or ule have me n the rest of SEAHAM HARBOUR to answer to!!!!!

People are entitled to their opinions, but to call Duncan a "disgusting human being" for being bisexual is absolutely awful. And people wonder why the human race is slowly destroying itself. It's because of a minority of ignorant people that are unaccepting towards any ways of life different to their own. Maybe the "disgusting human being" term would be more suited for them, eh?

WHO IS NOT BI-SEXUAL ANYWAY IN 21.TH CENTURY!??? Only the ones that don't want to admit it ! Enjoy your new found sexuality man.
By Lara.. Posted July 13 2009 at 1:19 AM.
Don't be surprised in a few years if James admits that he was conflicted when he announced his bi sexuality, but since then, he he has finally come to fully accept that he is gay and okay with it.
Fine that James was so open, but one wonders if he was about to be outted as gay, and adopted his bi sexual stance to mitigate what he may foresee as damage to future career options; possible acting roles, etc., and his announcement more-or-less communicates to his fan base (promoters and casting directors),
"Don't worry ladies! You still have a shot at good ol' Duncan ... and you boys listen up, too!"
By NeoZorba.. Posted July 13 2009 at 1:03 AM.
so what if he is bi?
what he does in his personal life is his business, no one elses.
he should come public with it, there is nothing to be ashamed about it.
& that talk about his daughter will be bullied & scarred emotionally.
what a load of rubbish.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with this at all!!!
By luke.. Posted July 13 2009 at 12:50 AM.
hi im bisexual and i think everyone shud leave him alone!!!!!personally i think everyone should be bisexual but its up to the individual

Goo Dunk!!! I don't know about other fans... but i am proud of you. Let all the other people talk! :D:D:D

NO, NOT DUNCAN!!! I loved him, OMG! I was a huge fan! What i can say? It shouldn't be this way.
What is happening?
I don't think being Bi is a good thing....
By Luisa.. Posted July 12 2009 at 11:41 PM.
no such thing as bisexual.
you smoke a pipe - youre gay. end of!
By harry.. Posted July 12 2009 at 11:11 PM.
i dont have a problem with what duncan does i have had sex with girls even though i have a boyfriend.my problem is that this man has a daughter and thinks that it is ok to tell he world about his bedroom antics.you are all very naive if you think she wont suffer emotionally or at the hands of bullies! and will duncan be there to help as a hands on father ? i doubt it he will be too busy with his complicated sex life!
By kim carter.. Posted July 12 2009 at 11:21 PM.
All you people who are writing nasty things ought to be ashamed of yourselfs! Would you say the same things if your own child told you they were bi/gay? All of you need to grow up, act like adults and keep your low life, pathetic comments to yourselfs! Well done Duncan! x

Always said he was gay
By Val.. Posted July 12 2009 at 10:47 PM.

It seems as he's committed the biggest sin going.
Wake up people we all have things in our lives which are not to everyone's liking.

All the people making nasty comments ought to be ashamed of themselves!
I've been a massive Blue (and mainly Duncan) fan for 7 years. Good on him for having the courage to speak up!
By Chantelle.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:58 PM.
sophie eyre how dare you be so judgemental, i cant imagine how hard doing this interview must have been for Duncan and his family and to have someone like you insult him for his bravery is disgraceful, his daughter will love him no matter what . go back under your rock.. this is the 21st century its OK to be proud of your sexuality or havent you heard?
By marie.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:29 PM.
Props for admitting it, being in the dark about yourself is the worst, and it is none of our places to judge him.
By Meghan.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:18 PM.
your outing is not scary as what the people would think. There are so many celebrities who are Bi or gays, but after a period of time, you will be accepted by everybody, same happened to me.Im glad that you have the courage now to tell about your sexuality.Im impressed about it.You feel free now.More power to your career and hope to meet you soon, since i'm a fan of the Blue
By Kevin Cuesi.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:13 PM.
Cee Cee you are a disgrace to black women! Finding out that Dunc is gay/bi doesn't change who he is. And quite frankly i'm don't see how this effects the way you view BLUE's music.
Quite frankly you need to grow up and stop being so small minded.
By nyrissa.. Posted July 12 2009 at 9:19 PM.
Well done duncan!!, im a bi male and it is difficult..hopefully you will have inspired people to do the same as you :)
By Tom.. Posted July 12 2009 at 8:28 PM.
I AM SO SO SHOCKED AND DISAPPOINTED BELIEVE. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST. I'm a black woman from south london never dated white boys but Blue were cool i liked them i liked their lad style. Duncan I thought was so Bloke-y and cool now I don't see him that way will not enjoy them the same . ever.
By cee cee disappointed... Posted July 12 2009 at 8:26 PM.
Duncan,
Hope you read this - well done. I'm 30yrs old and recently struggled with being bi, as i liked women too.
I couldn't understand why i felt it so wrong - and then over time i realised it was ok to like men and women.
I'm currently single and loving it. Mr or Mrs right will come eventually. As i read your story it felt like exactly like what i went through in terms of feelings.
I even emailed it to my mum. It will help her to understand my explaination. She assumes all gay/bi men are loud, camp, and love kylie haha. As i'm neither of those she didn't have a clue.
Thanks Duncan. You have made my weekend.
Feel free to contact me via my email.
James

It is frightening that there are people out there calling him a 'disgusting human being' - vicious dictators are disgusting human beings, not someone who happens to be bisexual. What's wrong with the world?
By nick.. Posted July 12 2009 at 8:21 PM.
As long as your happy with your sexuality, it does not matter what I think. You are still lovely just as you are Duncan my baby! xxxxxxx
By Allie Fleming.. Posted July 12 2009 at 7:56 PM.
I can't believe we're in the 21st century and there's still people like nidk and all you other negative people you're the one's with the problem. Good luck to you Duncan bi, straight or gay who cares you are who you are and i don't think any differently towards you and don't see why anyone else should. x x
By vix.. Posted July 12 2009 at 7:53 PM.
the damage to your daughter for doing this interview will be ireppable in years to come.no one wants to know about their parents antics.you and claire are a disgrace for bringing a child into this world.i just hope her new step father will offerstability.
By sophie eyre.. Posted July 12 2009 at 7:41 PM.
Life's rich tapestry is all about changing and growing, nothing stays the same. Be happy with who you are, your a good person, that's all that counts. Good luck.

well..all the best Dunc...

Being bisexual is hardly news and hardly interesting.
Who really cares - he just needed some media attention, guess there is some more music in the pipeline or he is just trying to resurect something.
Its hardly a shock either. There are so many messed up people around in celeb land now that nothing is shocking now.
By Craig.. Posted July 12 2009 at 6:51 PM.
RE: Cloggypop
nice, duncan dohnut
thing is, its good he's comfortable with himself now, but just a shame it's clearly a publicity stunt for what will inevitably be the crappest reunion tour in history.
By megger.. Posted July 12 2009 at 7:01 PM.
I always thought something was not quite right.
But hey, so what, he's not the first and certainly wont be the last and as long as he is happy with himself, then that's all that matters.
By Bonnieb.. Posted July 12 2009 at 6:55 PM.
I think it's very awesome to come with something ya are if ya really feel what ya really are...
there are so many different worlds , sooner or later people have to accept it like I do. It's oki to be honest and not hiding , I feel proud over Stephen for the first time I heard about he being gay and started the supporting , then came Mark ( Westlife ) out with by being gay so it's oki to be bisexual as well!!!!! Ya got me to support ya right through it!!!!!!
