DESPERATE MADONNA is setting up a trust fund to help Malawi girl MERCY even if she can't adopt her.

Madge knows she's on shaky ground now JAMES KAMBEWA has come out of the woodwork claiming to be the four-year-old's dad.

But whatever happens I hear the multi-millionaire singer still wants to make sure Mercy gets a good education and sees life outside Malawi. A source revealed: "Madonna loves Mercy. She wants to be part of her life and provide for her."

The Queen of Pop is working with her lawyers to set up a trust fund to pay for Mercy's schooling and travel even if the ruling that she can't adopt her still stands. And Madge will make sure that the man claiming to be Mercy's dad can't get his hands on the cash.

My source added: "She wants to make sure Mercy has everything she needs in life and her dreams are fulfilled."
