Mad Idea

WARRING duo MADONNA and GUY RITCHIE have agreed to play happy families five times a year for the sake of the kids.

It was an awkward Christmas peace deal which, remarkably, saw Madonna and her ex in the same room for the first time in months.

Now, the family are bracing themselves for more of the same throughout 2009, when they'll meet up for important dates in the calendar.

The divorced couple have taken the decision for no other reason than the love of their kids - which I applaud.

And hopefully, her Madgesty and his Guyness will be able to pull off the Happy Family routine long after the day when baby David learns to sing his ABC.

A pal close to Guy told me everyone hopes the mad idea will work. "When it comes down to it, they are both parents and they want to do what's right for their children.

"Christmas was something done through gritted teeth, but it worked out in the end and was a success for the kids," he said.

"But the children aren't stupid, especially Lourdes who is old enough to understand what's been going on. There was a lot of pain and nastiness last year."

I'm trying to work out if the new plan means the pair are closer to sorting out their bitter custody battle over Rocco, eight, their adopted son David, three, and her 12-year-old daughter Lourdes.

The truce will be extended to major holidays and events, including Rocco's ninth birthday in August and Lourdes' thirteenth in October, and other dates related to the Kabbalah religion.

Madonna, 50, moved to New York to get away from London-based Guy, 40, after they announced their divorce in October following an eight-year marriage.

The settlement saw Madonna keep their £10 million London pad and American homes, with Guy taking their £10 million mansion in Wiltshire.

Lucky for the kids that Guy celebrates Christmas, unlike Madonna and her adopted religion. All children living in Christian countries should have the right to celebrate Christmas along with their peers. For the kids it's hard when they see other children celebrating something, receiving presents, when they aren't allowed due to their parents religious beliefs. Children don't care about religion, they just want to be treated equally. Parents should stop being so selfish and stop indoctrinating their children to follow the parents religion. Let the kids decide for themselves.
