Complaints have flooded the BBC website over the way she uses the word "was" instead of "were".
Alesha, 31, will say to contestants: "I liked how strong you was" or "Was you smelling her hair?"
One viewer wrote on the Strictly web forum: "It makes me cringe to hear her speak." Another added: "You can speak with an accent, but speak correct English." A third added: "In my household every 'was' is greeted with a chorus of exasperated WEREs!!!
"Maybe Alesha would tell us that we is being well pedantic."
Ironically, others wrote misspelt, poorly punctuated messages, including: "I was really upset with Aleshas grammar" and "the grammer issues are adding to her difficulties". Alesha, from Welwyn Garden City, Herts, has been coping with a backlash since replacing popular Arlene Phillips on the BBC1 show.
An Alesha supporter wrote on the forum: "Who is sitting at home typing nasty comments like that with a huge chip on their shoulder? In fact I think it sounds like you have a whole potato field on yours."
*Yes, we know it's wrong.

I think if you are going to be a judge on SCD then you must have qualifications /and or the experience to back up your observations. Alesha has none except as a would be participant.
If bringing back arlene is a no, then somebody who is very knowledgeable in technique and that we see every week, Karen Hardy would have been a far better choice.
I like others can't abide the way Alesha speaks and uses grammer, this shows complete laziness in wanting to use the english language properly and has nothing to do with dialect.
Alesha, don't give up your day job but you are way out of your league in SCD and an embarrassment not only to yourself but also to the public who watch the show and you do yourself no favours.

Simon Cowell is an intelligent man but even he says anythink, and somethink, instead of anything, and something!! very annoying!!

How dare Aleisha to speak to Craig Kelly like that pointing her finger & saying better people have gone it should have been you. It was the public who kept him on the show. Please think before you open your mouth. Craig couldnt dance but was trying & bad comments like that are uncalled for.

I have watched SCD sine the very first series avidly. However, this series I was determined to boycott watching as Arlene was replaced by Alesha. The draw of Strictly was too much and I'm now watching in spite of Alesha not because of her. I, too, find her ill-educated, copy-cat comments irritating and thus, Sky-Plus the show and watch it on play-back forwarding any of her empty comments so I don't have to listen to them. The original line-up was the perfect mix along with the dancers who have done the show since series one and Brucie and Tess, complete the package. This is not victimisation or ageism (I am only 31years of age)- please Alesha, for your own sanity and the quality of the show go back to doing what you were trained to do. (P.S Being a contestant on the show doesn't qualify you to commentate on the technicalities of dancing).

Please sack the illiterate tacky dummy Alesha, she is arrogant and rude to the viewers and dancers, get Arlene back. ........................boycotted until you do.
By Jon. Posted November 13 2009 at 4:54 PM.
Alesha a good judge?? It is obvious that the comments she makes are "gifted" to her through her earpiece - you don't honestly think she comes up with them herself? Watch her concentrate (as if listening to someone in her earset) before she's asked for her comments. It's all a sham.
By Charles Bennett. Posted November 8 2009 at 10:16 AM.
I am neither British nor white and live 15 hours away (by flight). And all of you can consider that I am impartial. Strictly Come Dancing is very popular among us because we get to see, learn and listen to comments made by the judges, albeit entertained by the performances of the both celebrities and professsionals. Although Alesha has done very well and eventually won the first place, we feel that it is more appropriate to have judges for SCD who are truly "qualified" and experienced. Brendon is not wrong but the essences of the SDC series are also related to the background of the judges. The combination of Len, Arland, Craig and Bruno not forgetting Bruce F and Tess has made SDC really worth watching. As for Miss Alesha grammer, there will always be slangs. dialects and "market versions" of any languages....BUT to appear on TV like the BBC, good communication skills and grammar (likely be copied, immitated and repeated) shall NOT be swept under the carpet. Sincerely yours. One should encourage his/her children to speak properly.
By Fair . Posted November 8 2009 at 9:27 AM.
Alesha is far too thick to understand why she annoys the viewers. She blames ageism ect.. Alesha your grammar is not as good as my 4 year old grandaughter. You are unbelievably arrogant. And your vulgar coarse laugh is revolting. Your answers are pathetic and irrelevant, and more than often they are embarrassingly staged, possibly relayed through your earset. I tried the mute button for a while, but ever since your mouth opened on SCD, the show has grinded down to a second-rate bareable programme. One of which i will not be viewing again.
By Michael. Posted November 3 2009 at 5:05 PM.
I think it's absolutely ridiculous the stick that this girl is getting. She is a really nice woman, and judges the show very very well. Now everyone is going on about grammar?! Get a life....jeeeezo !!!
By Gary. Posted October 31 2009 at 3:08 PM.
I did not know that this show was an English language class.
How wrong was I? Alesha is doing fine, leave her alone. She is up there as she has talent, which most of the people who comment here do not have. So go get a life morons and leave the poor talented girl alone. There are many of us who just love her.
By Faqi. Posted October 28 2009 at 5:16 AM.
If you don't like it then dont listen INIT..... you know we all wish we was on TV you know! HAHA
By harry. Posted October 27 2009 at 3:11 PM.
Alesha seems to be an intelligent young woman. Surely it wouln't be impossible for her to correct her grammar herself. Maybe could point out the error herself and make it a bit of fun, so that a whole swathe of the population could learn the simple rules.
I'm sure Alesha would go along with this in her usual good hearted way.
By Jenny SG. Posted October 26 2009 at 7:33 PM.
I thinks Alesha is very good english even better than me who got an english PhD.Mourn mourn sad people with no english degree like me
By olifar. Posted October 26 2009 at 6:12 PM.
I think Alesha is truly lovely and she is an absolute credit to the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. Her comments always have a positive attitude towards the contestants whereas the other judges can be extremely rude and I feel they damage the confidence of the contestants.
I find it extremely low and petty how people can go making complaints about another one's use of grammar, Those people FORGET! how wonderful Alesha is look at all she has done for the BBC's Children In Need she's been supportive every step of the way.
By Derek Flinders. Posted October 26 2009 at 3:51 PM.
Those of you who've got nothing else to worry about than a grammatical error, get a live and find something else worthwhile to occupy you time. It would surprise me in the slightest if some slaters have an affinity to Nick Griffin and his lot.
By Laura. Posted October 26 2009 at 2:26 PM.
Only just seen this article today and I'm glad it's being discussed. It's horrendous!!
I stopped watching after a couple of weeks, she makes me cringe.
You can get away with any accent but there's no excuse for bad grammar, especially on national television.
By chris. Posted October 26 2009 at 12:48 PM.
Leave the poor girl alone.
Its her first series. I think people are just looking for excuses to find something wrong with her.
In regards to her speaking street, i've never seen evidence of this.
Please could you explain as to why she's "ghetto?"
what is your definition of Ghetto because if you really look deeper you will find shes far from "Ghetto".
widen your knowledge before writing rubbish you dont know about!
By Kiki. Posted October 26 2009 at 11:11 AM.

By Debbie. Posted October 26 2009 at 8:17 AM.
I like the people saying that they think people who have a good command of the English language are nazis or that they should leave this idiot alone because she speaks ahem, street. It is a little like saying," I am as thick as two short planks and bloody proud of it and everyone should applaud me" Well we don't, we despise you. Go to night school and grow up you morons. You are ill educated and need some help, but not from the tax paying public, from your idiot families. Get them to put their hands in their pockets and pay for you to be able to converse with your fellow human beings. Here are a few tips, 'ppl' is nonsense, make the effort to type people, you aren't that retarded are you? 'there' and ''their are quite different, purchase a dictionary and find out why people (ppl) sneer at you.

Love, love, love Alesha!!!!!! There are always going to be haters but who cares. Shes got the gig and is here to stay. Thats all there is to say. So write as much negative comments as you like she will still be there when you turn on your tv next week.

Sorry, Warren (below, posted at 4.32pm), good grammar, like good manners, costs nothing and is the very least we expect of a flagship programme on what is probably the world's most famous broadcasting corporation. I like everything else about Alesha, her style, her humour, her intelligence and not least her looks, but cringe at her bad English. Whe we have employers complaining that university graduates can't even string a sentence together, we must realise it's time to have a look at this!
And sorry, Warren, but your inability to work out the difference between "they're" and "there" says it all, mate!

By Keith Osbourne. Posted October 25 2009 at 5:12 PM.
The english i was taught by a white english teacher back home is not the english i hear from a lot of people here. A lot of white people i have met do not speak what i would call text book english. I have had to correct a few spelling mistakes for some friends . Why the hype about Alesha's 'was' and 'were'? I have heard a lot of grammatical errors on TV here than back home where english is our second language.
By Frank. Posted October 25 2009 at 4:45 PM.
Why are people so sad?! Who cares really?! I actually hate people who complain to OFcom and all that. Its like they watch TV just to find something to moan about and complain..pathetic! I swear most people have the complaints number saved so there ready to dial! Thats they way she speaks..big deal! If you dont like it dont watch it..simple! Also get a life!

Pete wrote: 'Mohamed Dada......do you teach English,if so,where are your comas and one never starts a sentence with, and.Keep up the good work?????'
You're another one, Pete. Kids are told not to begin a sentence with 'and' to avoid bad habits, but they learn as they mature that it is in fact perfectly acceptable. Unfortunately you are yet to reach this stage, while you also seem unsympathetic regarding Mohamed's apparent coma...
It just struck me - from your mess of a 'contribution' - that perhaps you are still a child, so apologies if that is the case.
By A.J.D. Posted October 25 2009 at 4:24 PM.
Ironic that people complain about her grasp of the English language, yet no mention is made of the bad grammer of the programme's name: Strictly Come Dancing.
When television presenters mention the programme in its deminuitive form, they pronounce it 'Strickly'.
By D7. Posted October 25 2009 at 4:03 PM.
Mohamed Dada......do you teach English,if so,where are your comas and one never starts a sentence with, and.Keep up the good work?????

This is the sad thing in Britain - people like Alesha Dixon, Cheryl Cole, Kerry Katona, Katie Price - the list is absolutely endless! I have lived abroad in several countries, speaking several languages and where other nationalities speak their own language correctly as well as others, but here in Britain we relish in having mindless people becoming celebrities and taking over our TV programmes and national newspapers. Pathetic and very very sad.
By carole elizabeth. Posted October 25 2009 at 3:15 PM.
and as for the comment from someone saying they were brought up in the north west of england...I was brought up in Wigan, but I was educated and know exactly how to speak properly. If Alesha was doing anything other than talking on TV, then who cares how she speaks, but as a personality on the BBC she should speak correctly! It isn't hard to swap was for were is it? It's hardly rocket science and whoever said it was racist to say this is clearly NUTS. It has got absolutely nothing to do with it you PC brigade fool.
By vicki. Posted October 25 2009 at 3:03 PM.
Get this uneducated, thick, knows-nothing-about-dancing bimbo off my screen and bring back Arlene!!!!!!
By Helen E.. Posted October 25 2009 at 2:59 PM.
Bottom line is that this is a show on the BBC. She is using language incorrectly. It doesn't matter where you are from and what accent you have BUT her use of language is completely incorrect and it DOES matter. We should still have standards as a nation. I am amazed that the BBC haven't told her to stop saying was instead of were. It is totally ignorant. Children will start to think that it is the norm to speak like that when it isn't. If you went for a job interview in the real world and it was an important job and you couldn't even speak properly you woud not get the job. Simple. Stop defending this use of language because it is making a mockery of it. If you are defending it I can only imagine it is because you speak like this yourself. Be ignorant in real life if you wish, but when you are on television you have a duty to at least be correct as you have the power to influence others.
By Vicki. Posted October 25 2009 at 2:58 PM.
I do like Alesha, but every time she says 'you was' i cringe This is not an issue of accent, it is about correct grammar .SCD is prime time tv,and therefore we expect people to be able to use the correct grammar
By joy. Posted October 25 2009 at 2:00 PM.
It's funny how several complainers render their self-appointed superiority laughable by themselves making basic mistakes.
Mark Thomas, for example - your 'Dumbing down of society at it's best' contains one such schoolboy error.
By A.J.D.. Posted October 25 2009 at 2:06 PM.
Get over it! I think it's a disgrace that people are taking the time to complain to the BBC about Alesha's use of English! They would be better off complaining about why someone like Nick Griffin is / was (take your pick) allowed on Question time to spew the bile that comes out of his mouth. Get a grip people and get over it. Arlene is gone! and whilst Alesha is nothing like her or the type of people associated with Ballroom Dancing, she is a breathe of fresh air. This hate campaign has to stop!
By Remy Lebeux. Posted October 25 2009 at 1:50 PM.
i feel for alesha didnt like her to start with but with all these ppl having a go at her for her grammar omg so what if she didnt do well at english i didnt either did in my classes not in exams you no we cant all be perfect or good at everything no one is we all have our down sides in life
By ang. Posted October 25 2009 at 12:03 PM.
here we have people complaining about some one who doesnt piece together her sentences properly,i.e her grammar, ive scrolled down to most of the comments and most need a spell checker,i really dont like her as a judge but to be judged by something so petty is also so bad,and it wasnt that long ago most of the world welcomed jade goody who lets face it was the worst ive ever heard
By kerry odowd. Posted October 25 2009 at 11:38 AM.
Give the girl a break, she is brilliant!
She's a fabulous singer, dancer, and judge, if you don't like to watch her on TV, either turn over or switch off!!
By Marilena. Posted October 25 2009 at 11:34 AM.
I hate it when people use incorrect grammar, especially 'we was'. It happens all the time on sopas too - Kevin Webster on Corrie for one.
By sophie. Posted October 25 2009 at 11:10 AM.
Yes, we are all so perfect so lets banish Alesha to the dungeon for something petty like a little grammar mistake. The nation seriously needs to get a grip! If she's not talking the way we like then she's blinking too much - yes, I've heard complaints about that. There are more pressing matters in the world and like Alesha has said 'This is ONLY Saturday night entertainment'.
And Mark Thomas - 'She did go to school but she did not get any good GCSE due to her lack of knowledge.'
HILARIOUS! You know her GCSE results do you? Then you should also know that after school she went into further education and had a university place waiting for her, but she declined so she could go into music.
By Rachel. Posted October 25 2009 at 11:07 AM.
vanissmag your grammar is worse than anything Alesha has ever uttered. You are a perfect example of someone who is quite ignorant yet we let you post drivel despite your stupidity.
By fin. Posted October 25 2009 at 10:55 AM.
I find there's something weird and creepy about her head and face which makes me cringe altogether. Does n't sem to be in the right proportion to the rest of her body!
By Frank. Posted October 25 2009 at 10:29 AM.
I haven't got an issue with Alesha's grammer because she is one of many celebs. who are not particularly well educated. My issuue is with the fact that she is a judge at all. Just because she was a winner does not make her an expert on dancing but she tries to come across as if she is. Why couldn't the BBC have chosen someone like Karen Hardy who really is a true expert.
By Malcolm Morley. Posted October 25 2009 at 10:03 AM.
Alesha's ghetto, so what do they expect??
By M.S.Phelps. Posted October 25 2009 at 10:06 AM.
you people have lost the plot, if bruce or len got the push then you could have a point, Alesha is a pop star and celebrity and a former contestant she does what she says on the tin. and she DESERVES to be on the show she is a great role model and an inspiration to young woman.
By MARION CUNNINGHAM. Posted October 25 2009 at 10:06 AM.
Alesha is lovely, won the show, has bags of talent , is bubbly. So what if she doesnt speak the Queens english, neither do have of London from what I see on television.
Its not racisim but its petty to keep nit picking the girl, She is a superb dancer & can sing . If your not happy , switch over.

To fin,
Yes, you are right! It is racism against any decent people who can speak English!I guess you are like Alesha with very poor basic speaking skills, standards.
It is essential that "celebrities" would show examples, if she can improve, sack her!
By Vanismassag Kotos. Posted October 25 2009 at 8:32 AM.
She won the show so she has talent,do not compare her with those who have none. Leave her her alone.
By mrgooner. Posted October 25 2009 at 8:27 AM.
Don't blame the girl! If any of us were offered a job like that because our face fits, rather than if we were the best person for the job, I'm sure most of us would jump at the chance. Alesha has just joined a long line of so called 'celebrities' that have no talent, i.e. Cheryl Cole - blind leading the blind on X Factor, Kerry Katona - once presented as role model mum in our adverts, I could go on all morning. These people have got where they are namely because they look the part, often have had some personal adversity, i.e. husband trouble and it's who you know, not what you know coming into play. Bottom line...quality and excellence have gone out of the window with everything, from frontline services; hospitals, retail services, through to the fodder provided as entertainment on our screens.
By Zig & Zag. Posted October 25 2009 at 8:07 AM.
I fully understand the comments on here and as a teacher one of my tasks is to overcome similar problem areas when assessing my students books.
And then you watch national TV and radio and hear the likes of Alesha and Steve Claridge who speak Kitchen English!
So how are we to overcome this problem? The Beeb should have Literacy tests like us foreigners need when we apply to become residents in the UK!
By Mohamed Dada. Posted October 25 2009 at 8:05 AM.
Leave her alone she is a good judge and people should lighten up.They could not do a better job and she works hard and tries her best.
People should get over themselves and leave her be.
By Bernard. Posted October 25 2009 at 7:53 AM.
The furore over Alesha Dixon's appointment and now her non-standard grammar needs to be seen for what it is: racism. Alesha Dixon has as much charm and beauty as Tess and a more pleasant personality than the vain and unfunny, stage hogging Bruce. Her fellow judges and professionals have agreed with many of her observations. Get over yourselves, Little Englanders!
By fin. Posted October 25 2009 at 7:39 AM.
It is about Alesha's background. She did go to school but she did not get any good GCSE due to her lack of knowledge. Do not blame her, she was born with very good voices but unfortunately without much in her head.I still like her.
By Mark Thomas. Posted October 25 2009 at 6:55 AM.
Yes Neil - I am sure you got a PHD (!)... the only people who get upset about this are the people that can't talk properly and know that even foreign nationals that have English as a second language can actually put a sentence together while a a large amount of people can't even be bothered to speak their mother tongue in the correct way.
Dumbing down of society at it's best.
By Lyla. Posted October 25 2009 at 5:58 AM.
It's true. She is a moron that can't speak properly, but just because she is pleasant looking, the BBC bosses carry on like everything's normal.
She is just an uneducated idiot that lucked out
By Lyla. Posted October 25 2009 at 5:04 AM.
For Welwyn Garden City Alesha is practically suave and urbane.
By Keith Price. Posted October 25 2009 at 1:25 AM.
I think its great that people speak the way they feel... the grammar nazis have no place in our society.. I attained a PhD yet I don't speak perfect english as I was brought up in the north west of england where we are very free in how we talk...
