TINY singing ballerina Hollie Steel told how she was plagued by bullies for years-until her sensational Britain's Got Talent audition.

The 10-year-old wowed the show's 13.5 million viewers last night but admitted other kids used to make cruel jibes about her looks and her singing.

She said of BGT: "This has been the best thing that has ever happened because everyone is making a fuss over me.

"That has never happened before.

"The kids at school are mean to me sometimes. One girl tells me my hair is always messy and I look like an idiot. And the other kids laughed at me when they heard me sing.

"But now I get to be special and everyone at school wants to be my friend." After her pre-recorded performance of the My Fair Lady tune I Could Have Danced All Night, judge Piers Morgan said she was the best child ever to sing on BGT.

A thrilled Hollie ran over to parents Nina and Jason and told them: "Now I know I'm not ugly."

The only criticism came from Simon Cowell, who said he didn't like her ballerina outfit.

Yesterday Hollie posed in her tutu for the News of the World at her home near Accrington, Lancs, and admitted: "It was my mum's choice.

"I wanted to wear a really nice dress, instead." But Nina, 37, an NHS audiologist said: "We didn't think much would come from the audition, so I didn't want to spend a fortune on buying a really fancy outfit.

"And we were prepared for her to get knocked back by Simon-we'd have told her, 'Oh, he doesn't know what he's talking about.' But, you know what, I wanted her to look small and cute so everyone would be surprised by how huge her voice is. And it worked!

"So there, Simon!"

Nina-who's bought her daughter a £15 Tesco dress for TV interviews this week-told how Hollie started singing when she was a toddler by copying her brother Josh, now 15.

But she nearly LOST her booming voice when she suffered pnuemonia at the age of four.

Nina said: "When we went to the hospital it was like, 'if we don't sort this out quick she is going to lose a lung'. If that happens you have nothing supporting one side of your body. She wouldn't have been able to sing.

"Luckily her body started taking to the antibiotics but she had a couple of emergency operations.

"Considering what her lungs have been through, it makes it even more amazing that she can sing how she does."

Dearest Hollie - congratulations, your performance was outstanding and you have THE most gorgeous voice for a young lady who's just turned 11!! Simon
wouldn't dare to buzz you off once he heard you sing - if he did, he should be shot! When you broke down in tears on the stage, I thought, oh, poor darling! Then...back you went on the stage to
perform "Edelweiss" perfectly, with a really high note on the end. That was soooooo brave, well done! Your Mum, Dad and big brother Josh are no doubt proud of you - to bursting point! You should have been the BGT 2009 winner. All the outfits you wore were pretty - yes, even the lilac/pink tutu. The green one was my favourite - you looked really beautiful in it. All the very best for your singing career - you'll go far with that wonderful voice of yours, and if you do release a CD, I'd be one of the first to order a copy of it.

Dear Mr & Mrs Steel,
If by chance you see this, please let Hollie know that this 65 year old Canadian sends his utmost thanks for her touching my heart, and bringing tears to my eyes. What a beautiful, graceful and talented child, and what incredible courage. Simply put, she is very special (of course you know that). How rightfully proud both of you and her brother must feel.
God bless,
Erik

I'm amazed at some of the negative, and sometimes downright cruel remarks made by some people. Hollie is ten years old - "ten"! Could you do what she did? Could you handle the pressure of performing in front of a large audience knowing your'e about to be judged? Do you have any concept of the excitement, pace & pressure contestants go through? Did any of you notice how she gripped her tiny fists when she wanted so much to try again after faltering? Ten years old and yet so committed. Do some of you negative, fault finding wombats eat gruel for breakfast or have a troublesome haemorrhoid which makes you just plain nasty for the day?
Give it a rest - the child has talent, grace, compassion and beauty and a lot more courage than most.

PLEASE!!!!! Hollie Steel is just wonderful... her voice is just fantastic... she was really the BEST. Should have been the winner but anyhow, she is
only 10 years old. How in the world people can
be so mean to a little girl with such a GREAT TALENT!!!!
Hope we can hear from her again.

I can't believe she didn't win nevertheless she's my idol performing on such a big stage infront of such a big audience is a massive thing to do for a kid around 10 years old. I think she is a really cute and adorable child and she has definitely got a show-biz career ahead of her. But I was so glad that she made it through to the final. Everyone is saying to me that she got through against Greg Pritchard cause she had a second chance and all that lot... but if she didn't have that second chance I think that notes that she hit in her first time round would've been good enough for her to go through anyway. And I don't see why she got bullied in the school playground - she's an adorable, young talented 10 year old; but I am glad that she doesn't have to face that again. HOLLIE STEEL IS MY IDOL!

I feel that Hollie is not ready for competitions like BGT. It is just too big for her. Has she been prepared for the consequences of not winning?

Of course our children are precious to us but by protecting them and not developing their defense and coping mechanisms just weakens them for later life. The judges - especially Simon - broke all the rules to accomodate Hollie - so as not to appear to be a monster to a dainty little girl. Yet he has been critised for putting the kids through the harsh cycle of competition because of his usually candid nature. This gesture is also unfair to other contestants. Just because they are adults does not mean that they do not work hard or face obstacles; especially if they do not have support from people around them. I am sure Greg Pritchard with his oddball act do not get much of that - probably why he is only auditioning now instead of when he was 10. How about Susan Boyle? Also bullied and only stepped out now that she is nearly 50. Should she get a lessor chance than Hollie? If she was to be the a contender to the spot that Hollie just won, who should the judges pick?

If kids like Hollie gets psychologically and emotionally hurt, the fault should not be the competition or the judges, but the parents.

thought it was unfair that hollie won against greg pritchard, she got through on sympathy vote!!!!!!!!

Hollie's singing at BGT was undisputably the best. Her notes were perfect on the dot, and she sang with emotion. I was an ardent fan of Susan Boyle. But after hearing Hollie, here in far away New Zealand, I think Hollie stands a clear chance of winning and singing before the Queen. I would hate to make comparisons but Hollie's hitting the right notes and sense of timing was a wee bit better than her competitor. If Hollie manages to focus on her singing, forgetting totally about the distractions whether about the nasties misquoting her or whatever, the school bullies, including some of the ill-informed postings over here, and manage to lift the quality of her singing above her already high level, she is going to be a winner all the way. But she has got to focus and get the right advice. Susan Boyle has slightly raised her quality in the semi-final though faltering on some notes is noticeable. It's all about confidence on the day and at the time. Go for it Hollie. I was looking to speak to you or your parents with a bit of well meaning advice but don't have your phone or email address. And one thing, Susan made me sob, but you Hollie made me sob even more when I heard you sing. Stay confident Hollie. Don't be surprised when you are announced the eventual winner!

Hollie deserves to win the show..she has that special sincere quality and charm that none of the others have

As a lady (and ALWAYS a young girl @ heart), my life and professional training have given me the joys of "performing" in a part for the enjoyment of the audience, and so often, a "tutu" has been the center of that routine. In large part, it is designed to emphasize the gorgeous "lines" of a dancer's movements through time and space. I have spent more than enough time in any single day to realize that the previous post from Mr. Whitehead, shows not only a total lack of understanding of the absolute grace for her age Hollie showed in her performance, but of the absolute chasm of heart, class and humility SHE has the he will simply NEVER understand. Having 2 young daughters, both of whom dance, I can tell this forum w/o a SINGLE SHADOW OF A DOUBT, she was dressed not only appropriately in her tutu, but showed a level of professionalism I only wish every young girl will untimately find in her life. BRAVO Hollie, BRAVO !

You are so cute and have an amazing voice i would have said yes xxx

By phoebe wainman.. Posted May 1 2009 at 7:11 PM.

I agree that Hollie's voice really was forced. Not at all natural and to be honest I did not enjoy the performance as much as Susan Boyles. I do wish her well though but please Hollie use your own voice and not the stage school one.

Just nice to see real talent lovely parents(not pushy pounds in their eyes).I really hope they have happy sucess.

By james.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:37 AM.

She was fantastic, and didn't notice anything about her outfit. Phil Whitehead, you need yoiur head testing, the girl was bullied at school, and still someone has to continue and be nasty, its a talent contest, not beauty pageant contest.

By lisa.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:36 AM.

well done hollie you were fab also those horrible bullies want to be your freind now what a suprise bullies never win but you have you've shown that you have a fantastic voice and will go far im sure they who have hurt you in the past won't get as far as you keep up the good work:)

By sal.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:39 AM.

Her voice was very odd, not natural at all. i would like to hear her sing with her own voice and not one that is a "stage school" plum voice that is put on.

By Lisa.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:18 AM.

what sort of comment is that,of course her costume fit her,her costume was right for her dancing part,if she wore a dress she would not be a ballerina would she,a fantastic singer and a great little dancer well done hollie your amazing, your parents must be so proud of you, wishing you all the best you will go far

By debbie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 1:33 AM.

Hollie's mum says that she wanted her to look 'small and cute' for her audition on Britain's got Talent. Sorry Nina but she didn't look small and cute in the slightest, she looked a mess and if you couldn't see that then you need your eyes testing. Your daughter has a fantastic voice and will go far but not if you keep dressing her in clothes that don't fit properly and that tutu did not fit your daughter properly.
