The show's overlord admitted he'd been horrified by the global adoration of the singing "hairy angel".
Even Kofi Annan, the ex-United Nations chief, was asking Gordon Brown about Susan when they met last week.
But Cowell warned that 48-year-old virgin Susan has to hide away if she has ANY chance of winning the ITV1 show.
He said: "Get yourself together, sweetheart, for the big one-which is the semi-finals.
"Choose the right song, focus yourself, shut your front door, maybe take a holiday and come back to the person you want to be and not as the person you think you should be."
Speaking at the launch of America's Got Talent in California, he added: "IF she gets through the semi-finals she MAY get through to the final and she MAY win.
"But it could all go horribly wrong because there are so many other distractions."
Since a clip of Susan on BGT appeared on the website YouTube, it has been watched 44 million times across the globe.
The spinster, from Blackburn, West Lothian, has now appeared on a string of top US TV shows and been covered by newspapers in India, Germany, China, Brazil and even the Arabic-language Al Arabiya.
And on Thursday Mr Annan quizzed crisis-plagued Brown about her after giving a speech in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.
In fact, the first thing Annan said to Brown on the way to dinner was: "So, tell me about Susan Boyle."
But Cowell said Susan was not even a stand-out talent. "She was just one of a group of very good auditions," he said.
Fellow judge Piers Morgan also had a pop, describing Susan as a "48-year-old woman with a little talent". But both he and Simon said they understood why she'd had a mini-makeover last week, and got her frizzy grey locks dyed brown and styled.
Piers said: "She probably looked at herself on TV and said I need to spruce myself up a bit. What woman wouldn't? I don't know any woman who wouldn't have had a new hairdo in her position."

Beauty lies in the eyes and ears of the beholder.
You can't lie back and close your eyes, relax and enjoy acrobats.
The whole world needs Susan at this time just like we had a breath of spring with Shirley Temle back in the early thirtes when we were going through the trials a tibulations of the GREAT DEPRESSION-I remember those days very well.
We need you Susan and some intelligent person or person's will give you a big recording contract so you can continue to sooth our savage souls.
I appreicate good music and not the hog calling that we are being forced fed today.
As our music goes so goes our world and it's awful at this moment in time.
A lot of Turans are blessed with graet voices and you are not a amateur-you are blessed with a beautiful voice.
YOU ARE A WINNER IN THE EYES AND EARS OF MILLIONS - SOME OF US STILL HAVE GOOD TASTE AND KNOW TALENT WHEN WE SEE IT.

Susan
Keep your wits about you and do us proud.
Your voice is amazing. You are lovely.

Sue,
We just love you to bits. You are British and this is what counts to our Queen. All the best at the Royal Variety Show. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
By gen.. Posted May 20 2009 at 5:26 PM.
I do not think too much of the BGT's panel of judges as they are far from intelligent and have no music qualifications. Sue is far more beautiful on the inside than that Amanda could ever be. Looks do not last and it really is how you are on the inside that counts.
Sue you have far more about you than any of the BGT's judges. You have the backing of the world so just go out there and win as you are so talented at singing. Use your talent for the good of others now as you are in an ideal position to sing to raise money for charity. Have one or two evenings where you will sing for charity and then any money collected can be donated. It will also give you some experience for BGT final.
Sue be strong and I am sure the media are on your side and want you to do well.

of course she can sing; she is a choirist. Her voice should sound even better than that. There are plenty of excellent amature singers who will never get a chance. Still I wish her well.

she can sing, she can sing she can sing too:)))

Let Susan Boyle enjoy just being a winner on BGT.
The media always seem to spoil things these days.
Let her enjoy a dream for while.
By Flossy.. Posted May 1 2009 at 3:15 PM.
Simon is right but he cannot have it both ways. American Idol asking for Susan to perform now. Simon could have said Ryan that aint happening til BGT is over.
Did he do that? No! Susan is money period, BGT has to do their job and Susan will do her's.
By Howard.. Posted April 28 2009 at 4:22 AM.
She was only told she was fantastic because people didn't expect it from what she looked like. If she walked in and was a total stunner young and sang like that she would be told she was good and there wouldn't be all this hype about her in the media. If she was so fantastic why where they did the charity album did she not get snapped up then ?? It doesn't make sense! Now she has changed her image and has to have no flaws in her voice she wont win! There are awesome dance groups this year and that little boy who sang was amazing!
By sian.. Posted April 27 2009 at 11:00 AM.
All those interviews she's doing are set up by Simon's company, aren't they?
By dada.. Posted April 27 2009 at 9:55 AM.
Simon gave great advice but Piers and him did not have to takes shot at her in the process. But this is Show Bizz!! Two weeks ago she lived alone with Pebble and was content. Now she cannot go anywhere without being hounded. The the phone is ringing of the hook and she has a man minder in her house. Now her family is going nutzo they should stay out of the press as well.Susan should find a place to hideout and prepare for the semifinals. Susan is special because of her attitude. She has said She thinks she has something to offer and that she would be happy if she makes us happy. You see with Susan it is not about recognition if it was that has already happen. Rest is gravy, Susan said she will do her best and I am sure she will, but she needs the support of those close to her to do the right things to make that happen. I would bet that will happen and the globe can spin normally again soon.
By Howard.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:11 PM.
Its great to hear the gems of talent, feel emotion for the great and the grim
BUT :
Seeing and listening to the awful Simon Cowell on the judging panel for this show, tops any of that. Simon should take his own advice and hide away out of the media, he has had his day
By Jill.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:28 PM.
I agree with rtruth - first comment. Susan is riding ahead of the show and cowell doesn`t like the fact she is going to make it without them - she does not need votes. The world have already decided they love her and she is already `there.`Well done susan - you`re a star.
By marie lloyd.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:06 PM.
simon and piers know the truth and rtruth will break it down for you. SUSAN BOYLE DOES NOT NEED BGT, THE SHOW NEEDS HER. they wanted a success story in the end but the show is already over because the story is already made. THAT IS THE "REAL" TRUTH
By rtruth.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:12 PM.
Susan actually is quite good. After listening her many times and after fading of first emotions, her singing is still outstanding. I checked all possible versions of I Dreamed a Dream on the net and only Ruthie Henshall stands out, all others, including Elaine Paige are on the same planet as Susan Boyle.
As for all who complain about her being too present in the articles - why are you reading them, what are you doing here?
But Simon Cowell is right, media in this country can be so terribly shallow. Let's hope Susan doesn't crack. And if she wins BGT or not, who cares? What is better, to win a glamorous show or to win the hearts of millions? Hasn't she just demonstrated that it is inner, not outer, that is important.
By Janez.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:41 PM.
its not susan's fault she has been getting this much attention.but i do think all this hype is a bit over the top and it can really hurt her in the competition.people are now expecting the most amazing voice ever when we have heard singers as talented as her before.i dont know what cowell is complaining about,* rolls eyes* all this publicity means he will be laughing all the way to the bank as usual.theres no way he would miss an opportunity like this, she is bigger then paul pots and leonna lewis at the moment
By jordan.. Posted April 26 2009 at 5:48 PM.
Susan was good - and we were all surprised when she sang. However Simon is right. People saying she was the winner after the first show is ridiculous. The media is now building her up so much that she is unlikely to be able to live up to the hype. She is good but not phenomenal. Then when she comes over as good but not brilliant the media will rip her apart.
By Jane.. Posted April 26 2009 at 1:37 PM.
It's not her fault that the press camp outside her door taking pics to sell for publication in newspapers. It's not her fault the clip from BGT was put on youtube and watched by all these people. Also, why is she referred to as the 48 year old virgin? This is not necessary. Is it a crime to be a virgin? Nobody ever refers to men this way and probably because the ones that can't get laid go to prostitutes so they are no longer virgins which is the saddess thing ever. You should refer to blokes like this as 'The 35 year old not a virgin cos he went to a pro otherwise he would be' ................
By Andy.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:56 PM.
to say that her voice is not particularly good is nonsense, why is it that she has astounded people all over the world,it must be that it is exceptional and hopefully she takes full advantage of this opportunity, so good luck.
By w.pace.. Posted April 26 2009 at 1:31 PM.
PLEASE can we stop talking about this woman - am sick to death of her already !!!
By kate.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:47 PM.
It would be better for Susan if she didnt win BGT. She wouldnt have to answer to Simons record company. She should get her own manager.
By julie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:08 PM.
Susan needs to get HERSELF an Agent, ensure she's not performing for no less than she deserves, the problem for Cowell is that he can't market her if she's already bigger than his show, what's more he can't claim to have found her!
All this 'contest' is about is for his 'management companies' advice in furthering her career, you could see in his eyes he recognised the audiences response so thought 'another underdog winner, short term contract = winner for me!'. She also gives him direct access to the lucrative 'Classics' market worth more than 'pop' longterm! The problem is she's gone against the grain, if she would get herself an AGENT and a decent contract off the back of that, she wouldn't need the game show or Cowell.
I don't watch tv, so don't vote for any of them, purely saw her clip on youtube. Fingers crossed she gets her management offer, but chances are Cowell will have her under contract from the moment she stepped through the door, onto that stage and therefore will have first 'dibbs' on her untill the show finishes, so no other agent can sign her up!
If she gets 'too famous' then he can't also say it was due to his efforts that she's famous, as without him she wouldn't have made it. As it is, he needs her to go back and keep competing, otherwise his lawyers won't have much of a case. So his advice is in HIS interest, not her's!
By Dave.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:22 PM.
yes we all know by now that susan can sing. simon is right im sick of her already shes nothing special she wont get my vote and to the people saying she didnt ask for fame what a silly statement if she didnt want the fame she would not of gone to bgt in the first place she new what she was doing she had already made a single years ago you people are so naive
By sarah.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:23 AM.
she wasnt that good anyway - its only because of the surprise due to how she looked that we were all so shocked - now the shock has gone there is only her voice, and while she had a very pleasant voice she was hardly world class.
By lea.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:28 AM.
Elaine Paige, simply not in Susan's class,or any one else for that matter.
By David Taylor.. Posted April 26 2009 at 11:46 AM.
Enough already!
I agree with the comment that we surely have bigger things to worry about!
Good luck to Susan Boyle- but PLEASE, a little less is a lot more!
By Margaret.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:52 AM.
Susan, please take Simon's advice. If (as some folk are saying) he's only telling you to stay out of the limelight for his own good, then know for sure that taking his advice will be twice as good for you. People love you exactly as you were when we first saw you, please don't make yourself over to look the way you think others want you to look.
By Jenni.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:00 AM.
Susan boyle dareD to go for her dream at 48 and 'looking a bit over the hill'. llets be honest when others would have dared not., my self included. This is why the lady gets so much derserved respect and attention. I love the lady- go see Oprah, boyle. However, the competition is tough this year-, saxaphonist, DIVERSITY, flawless ECT, ECT, ECT my votes else were for the ultimate
winner but good luck following your dreams susan. You are a STAR like none other.
By millie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:13 AM.
I agree with David, it's not about winning for sure, Ms Boyle has already achieved a success that she could not have imagined in her wildest dreams(she deserved 100%)
So whatever Simon says now it does not really matter, does it? Ms Boyle is a winner not just in Uk but worlwide and not just by her voice of course, as she has the qualities that a performer should posses, such as her charisma, confident, passion, strength, charm, hubble, funny and so on.
The fact that 90% of people around the world fall in love with her just the way she was, interms of her looks, was unheard, amazing and for that reason she should not let others(PR machine and the mediea) influence her.
I personally did not like the new hair cut(Not charming) but the colour is fine .....I liked the way she looked when the CNN visited her home...little make up and less frizzy hair will do for her
So please Susan be yourself and stay strong now as you always did in the past
All the best, love from Mia
By Mayah.. Posted April 26 2009 at 10:29 AM.
Susan: of this you may be sure. Whatever Cowell advises you to do, it will be in his interest--not yours.
By margaret.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:34 AM.
Simon Cowell does not care who wins as his main priority is his production program and getting his money! He is also gutted about Farah, who he cannot milk!
By Glenn.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:28 AM.
When Susan appeared on BGT she reflected a mirror onto how cruel and judgemental society can actually be. Basing how we perceive talent by how somebody looks. I am ashamed to say when I saw her I giggled too. Yes I was surprised when she sang beautifully but more than that I felt surprised by myself and terrible that at the age of 27 I still have not learnt the lesson that the way somebody looks does not actually mean they are useless. That's what Susan Boyle has given us. It does not matter if she wins or not it does not matter if she makes money or signs record deals and it certainly does not matter if she has a makeover. The point is she has shown as all up for the shallow people we are myself included and good for her. I wish her all the luck in the world xxxx
By Michelle.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:25 AM.
Simon is trying to say that the public adore her because she is the underdog and deserves to win. The new image and constant publicity will turn people against her or make others think they don't need to vote for her because everyone else will.
Hope she takes Simon's advice so she can stay on and stand a chance of winning.
By Ali.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:12 AM.
Cowell is on the verge of ruining his own show. But revealing who's through to the live semi-finals. Boyle being one of them. It's way-way too late to saying "IF she gets through.." We know she has. Stop giving it all away.
By Jodie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 9:07 AM.
I really don't know what all the fuss is about. Yes it was a shock when Susan started to sing and yes she has got a good voice but I would not say she is as fantastic as some of the other people that have auditioned for BGT. I do hope that she does not win, she has already got a name for herself, she has been in the papers everyday since her audition was aired. Hopefully someone else will win who is just as good or even better. Simon is right stay out of the lime light because all of the press at some point will start to annoy the public and lets not forget this is a public voting show.
By Jodie.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:58 AM.
why are all these complaints directed at simon! he's right - i'm bored of susan already and she will not wow us as much in the semi finals cos we will be expecting so much of her. He's not complaining about the make over but think how much more we would have all been delighted if we had not had it spoilt in the papers. and to the person who says she is not chasing media - she's been on all the major shows in the US - of course she;'s chasing the media.
I predict she will not win BGT - no way!
By bunny.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:54 AM.
WHo cares>???
I'm more concerned about the trillion dollars debt that this Labour government has got us into that we shall be paying back in our taxes for the rest of our living days, and the facist state that britain is becoming rapidly.
Keep numbing your brains with this trivial mess you SHEEP.
By Alex Fraser.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:47 AM.
This wouldn't have anything to do with her being more popular than Simon Cowell at the moment would it? As for the makeover er she had her hair done for goodness sake something many of us do every week (it's not exactly going under the knife).
Maybe she should have come on Britians got Talent later in the series but that's not her fault. Susan you look great.
By KATE.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:39 AM.
I have been told by my parents for many years 'don't judge a book by its cover' and yet
it would appear that Simon Cowell is doing just that.
The woman has a talent for singing and thats the
reason why she got through. I am training to be an I.T. Technicion and I am in my mid fifties, it my brain that counts not what I look like so hopefully she will make the big time
Good Luck for the future!
By David White.. Posted April 26 2009 at 8:01 AM.
I think it is disgusting that "virgin" "hairy angel" "spinster" etc are being printed all the time. SO WHAT?? It may be true, but its bloody rude to keep on about it. If you cannot be nice, say nothing at all.
By Jay.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:59 AM.
Simon is half right, although he is also downplaying her chances so that the show is more competitive. She is really at a risk of being over-exposed, not the same as being famous for a long career.
By Caroline.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:25 AM.
47 years old? She should have tried her luck 20 years earlier.
By Lucy.. Posted April 26 2009 at 7:03 AM.
What the media builds up the media will tear down. It's all part of selling papers and garnering clicks on websites.
Susan can sing and it will be up to true fans and those who appreciate her talent to ensure she gets a chance at a singing career. But, will the public and "fans" get tired of the hype and turn their backs on her? I won't, will you?
As for Cowell and Piers, well they have a show to hype and don't like BGT being turned into the Susan's Got Talent show. They are self-serving and as long as we recognize it then who cares.
By K Paige.. Posted April 26 2009 at 6:43 AM.

By laura.. Posted April 26 2009 at 6:08 AM.
I wish everybody would leave this poor woman alone shes had her hair dyed nothing wrong in that why do people always judge a book by it's cover she got a brilliant voice and hope she makes her dreams come true as for simon cowell would you not be sending susan boyle for a make over when you sigh her up cause im dam sure you would be doing
By sue williams .. Posted April 26 2009 at 5:58 AM.
Susan Boyle should do anythng she wants to do .. Yes there are lots of good acts ,but she was there for a reason . She was a God send ..Milions of people forgot about all the negative bits of everyday living and learned a lesson in two seconds FLAT.Bless you Susan and thank-you for the wake up. You can sing for me anytime . I listen to you everyday and take a deep breath .Maybe thats what a breath of fresh air is ..T truely believe that Susan is an angel......
By Claudette.. Posted April 26 2009 at 5:38 AM.
Susan deserves the best. She's got talent and if she's had some beauty treatments and hair done...we should be happy for her. She did not ask for the fame....it came to her.
By nicky.. Posted April 26 2009 at 4:43 AM.
I wish you all the success that is possible
By AGNES & ROBERT.. Posted April 26 2009 at 4:40 AM.
Hello from Canada:The terms "spinster" and "virgin" constantly in the press are offensive to a lot of us. Get over it already. It's a put down in its frequency. Over here we prefer "single woman" or "bacheloress" . No wonder Susan Boyle so regrets that comment "never been kissed". Cheers, Jake
By Jake.. Posted April 26 2009 at 3:45 AM.
Susan Boyle has merely dyed her hair, plucked her eyebrows and bought half a dozen new items of clothing. Listening and reading about her though, you'd think she'd had a full facelift, lipo and a Gok Wan meets Trinny and Suzannah style wardrobe makeover!
.
I agree 100% that she isn't the best singer in the world but the reality of it all is that because of her phenomenal global exposure, she is now quite a lot bigger than BGT and will make a fair few million quid anyway.
By Judy.. Posted April 26 2009 at 2:13 AM.
I'd still not hit it, but good luck to her.
As for Cowell & Morgan saying she has no looks or talent - pot, kettle & black sing out there. She's the frumpy looking woman of people's hearts and I can't wait to see her on the One Show.
By Les Happy.. Posted April 26 2009 at 2:02 AM.
Good luck, Susan. You are fantastic. God has given you a gift. thanks for sharing it. God Bless. Nv. U.S.A.
By Edna May.. Posted April 26 2009 at 1:11 AM.
She can sing but it wasn't that brilliant. I think people were surprised. Like with paul potts.
Though I hope she makes it and sings on stage and achieves her dream
By Sean.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:41 AM.
It's not about winning at all. Cowell just talks up the competition because he wants people to give him money by 'voting'. Do you honestly think it will make a difference to the future career of this singer whether she wins or not? She's famous enough anyway. Faryl Smith came 5th last year and signed a huge recording deal anyway so voting for her was pointless unless you're Cowell's bank manager. There's only one 'winner' and we all know who that is.
By David.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:32 AM.
i hope she stays focused on winning and becoming a proffesional singer and doesn't get lost in a one off faze of chat shows and thr like. she should do as simon cowell advises and take a back seat for now, concentrate on winning, PLAIN and simple like the first audition. i wish her all the luck, so long as she stays the way she is now.
By crissy.. Posted April 26 2009 at 12:00 AM.
Much as I dislike Simon Cowell as he appears on TV I do think that he has got this one spot-on.
By Nigel Tufnel.. Posted April 25 2009 at 11:59 PM.
She can sing. We have only heard one song. There are other good acts getting through. The media have a responsibility here as well, tone it down a bit people! Lets let real life come back.
