After Girlband and Bad Lashes sung to stay in the competition judges failed to come to a decision and it was left to the public vote to decide.

A unique version of the Oasis classic Wonderwall wasn't enough to save Geordie foursome Bad Lashes and they became the first act off the show.
Mentor Louis Walsh said: "I'm devastated for the girls as they had so much to give."
Daniel Evans
Song - I Want To Know What Love is
He gave it his all bless him but the 38-year-old looks far from a serious contender.
While Louis may have been a little harsh branding him a "Ricky Gervais" look-a-like, Simon was spot on calling him a glorified pub singer.
But everyone loves a sob-story and that could be this loveable single parent's key to more weeks in the competition.
Rachel Hylton
The only thing heard in living rooms over the country when this feisty mum-of-five started to sing was "What the hell is this?"
The 26-year-old East Londoner has a cracking back story and maybe the best set of lungs in the competition, but was let down by a song that only Dannii Minogue has ever heard before.
Ruth Lorenzo
Song - Take My Breath Away
Crikey.
This Latin lady could read the back of a box of cereal and it would still send shivers down the back of any red-blooded male.
And her voice wasn't the only thing taking breath away - her dress may have added won her one or two extra votes.
Bad Lashes
Song - It Must Have Been Love, But It's Over Now
Hmmm.
Well, they looked like they had fun up there - which is good because it was the only time they'll be up there.
Girlband
Song - Venus
"Didn't I see them outside Yates's Wine Lodge singing that song last night?"
These four young ladies could be any group of young fun girls you meet on a night out, and that's their appeal.
JLS
Song - I'll Make Love To You
Well they're not quite a British Boyz To Men (no matter how much they want to be), these boys do have a huge amount of potential.
While bands like this are ten-a-penny State-side, there's a gaping void in the UK market and these fellas could be just the guys to fill it.
Austin Drage
Song - Every Breath You Take
It was a very proud night for muscle bound Austin as he managed to end a song without balling his eyes out.
The nation was very proud.
It's hard to imagine the 22-year-old Essex boy not doing well due to the legions of teenage girls that are devoted to him.
Scott Bruton
Song - Yeah Yeah
In one of the most ill-thought plans the show has ever scene, Simon decided to give this former Pontins Blue Coat a song that only a Pontins Blue Coat would ever sing.
No one under the age of 40 knew the song and few over the age of 40 like it.
Whatever talent this 19-year-old Mancunian has it was never even given a chance to shine through.
Eoghan Quigg
Song - Imagine
Little Eoghan Quigg from a little village in little Ireland did something no-one in the past 37 years has ever managed to do.
He sang John Lennon's Imagine without butchering it.
Year after year, TV talent show after TV talent show, someone tries it and someone murders it.
After pulling that off, viewers can't help but be a little excited at what he's capable of.
Alexandra Burke
Song - I Want To Dance With Somebody
No surprises here when Alex hit the stage singing a Whitney Houston classic.
She performed well, but whether she has star quality is yet to be seen.
Diana Vickers
Song - With Or Without You
Simon got it spot on when he called her X Factor's answer to Marmite.
And if viewers weren't told she was warbling U2's With or Without You, they may never have worked it out.
The jury's still out on this girl.
Laura White
Song - Falling
A solid performance from Laura.
Without doubt a firm contender for the final.

I think Rachel should of gone last week she is so so CRAP.... Alexandra to win JLS second... Danni should go and Sharon should come back... Diana should not of been aloud to have a week out cause its not fair on the other finalists... Louis is the best Judge Simon is so stuck up his own ARSE!!!!!!

I think that you need to think really hard with your decisions on this show you are a really nice man, but boy do you get it wrong some times and this week is your biggest mistake ever, yes these two women did not deserve to be in the bottom two but you could have made it go to the public vote!!!!!!

It's a shame Bad Lashes went as I think ultimately they are the better of the two girl bands, but Louis made the right decision letting the public vote decide the outcome (something all the judges should do if/when they are faced with deciding between two of their acts).
I agree with most of your comments in the article about the first live show except Austin's performance was very lackluster and quite boring, as for Ruth's dress it really did nothing for her and she is an amazingly sexy lady no wonder Simon has the hots for her. For me the best three performances of the night went to Laura, Ruth and Alexandra.
Cheryl really does need to tell Diana to tone down the hand dancing though it really detracts from her performance.
