Pin-up Paul Newman's movie CV made him one of Hollywood's true superstars.
But after his death from lung cancer at the age of 83, the legend will be remembered for so much more than his brilliant screen performances.
For Newman was untarnished by the glitz of the movie industry and remained a devoted family man and one of the world's greatest ever charity donors.
His second marriage to actress Joanne Woodward lasted 50 years until his death on Friday at his home in New Haven, Connecticut, with his wife and five daughters by his side.
Asked once about using his sex symbol status to cheat, he famously replied: "Why would I go out for a hamburger when I have steak at home?"
In 1982, he co-founded Newman's Own, after he and a neighbour started making salad dressings in his basement for a joke.
They became so popular he once quipped: "The embarrassing thing is that salad dressing is outgrossing my films."
His dressings have made £125million, every penny of which went to his Hole In The Wall Gang charity which runs fun camps for gravely ill children.
Tributes to him poured in last night, led by his adoring daughters, the three eldest by first wife Jackie Witte.
In a statement Susan, 55, Stephanie, 54, Elinor, 49, Melissa, 47, and Claire, 43, said: "Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles but the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing. Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather. Dedicated philanthropist. To the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune. In his own words, 'It's been a privilege to be here.' "
ROBERT REDFORD, Newman's co-star in both Butch Cassidy and The Sting, said: "There is a point where feelings go beyond words. I have lost a real friend. My life, and this country, is better for his being in it." Pretty Woman actress JULIA ROBERTS said simply: "He was my hero."
James Bond star DANIEL CRAIG, who appeared alongside Newman in Road To Perdition in 2002, said: "He was one of the greatest screen actors of all time and a beautiful man. I think an era just ended." Born in 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio, Newman went on to make more than 60 movies.
He received a staggering nine Oscar nominations, picking up the coveted Best Actor award for The Color Of Money in 1986.
The method actor took part in real car races to prepare for 1969 hit Winning and became hooked on the sport. His career faltered in 1978 after the drugs overdose death of only son Scott from his first marriage.
Newman was given just weeks to live last month after finishing chemotherapy treatment at a New York hospital. But he cheerfully denied reports he was gravely ill to the end.
And despite his obvious frailty, friends say the star-surprisingly just 5ft 7ins tall-never lost the sparkle in those famous blue eyes.

Tears came to my eyes every time I opened my refrigerator for days after Mr. Newman's death, seeing his great smile and glee, laughing at himself while he clowned in different hats for different products. Each time I buy his product, knowing it will help some child, I silently toast a man who became part of our family over the years. I pray for his family's comfort.

I was just a school girl of 14 years, when I fell in love with the most beautiful man on screen. He walked off the train in FROM THE TERRACE, and my life was not the same again. I was in awe of his acting ability as well as his beauty. As I grew older I became to admire the man as well as the actor. I will never forget him in HUD, THE HUSTLER, HOMBRE, the list could go on and on. I love you Paul, I am grateful for the many hours of pleasure you gave me in a darkened theater. I never write comments, but feel compelled to express my feelings for you. Good bye I know that if there is a better place to go you are there.

I am in the same age group as Paul and I have been in love with him which seems forever. My daughter Leigh begane to carry a small photo of Paul from the age of 13yrs in her purse and called him her BABE .She is now 50 yrs old and still has the same picture which, in older life she would call him her husband. When the news came through about Paul she phoned me immediatly saying what am I going to do now. I am sure we all thought he would live forever.( He will in his films.) God bless you Paul and all your family.

The word legend is overused these days. You have to really have lived a full life and been respected wherever you go to deserve it. There are exceptions of course like Buddy Holly whose music lived on after he had gone. Paul Newman WAS an all time great and I feel privileged to have lived through the decades when he made his films. As I think of him I can still see that 50th egg being stuffed into him by those cons. He successfully mixed humour and pathos into his work which is hard to achieve. Good luck Paul wherever you may be

The word 'legend' is used a lot but in truth it only applies to just a few. Paul Newman was a hero and a legend. I am privileged to have lived right through the years he made his films . He could mix comedy and sadness together like no other, which is extremely hard to do. When I think of one particular moment in his films I can still see those cons stuffing down that 50th egg. Modern day actors have a long way to go to have the right to stand anywhere near him in the order of things. Good luck Paul wherever you are

Firstly, my condolences to Joanne and his five daughters at this devastating time. You must be
proud to have had such a wonderful man in your lives. A great actor, a wonderful man who is a legend in our time for his acting prowess and his never ending charity work.
I've been a fan of Paul Newman's for many many
years and there are very few of his films that I have not seen. There are only two times when I
have been to the cinema where the audience stands and applauds after a film had finished and these were 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' and 'The Sting'. If Paul Newman was in it you were always guaranteed a good film!! A true legend who the young actors of today could learn a great deal from.
Rest in Peace Paul.

Oh god, my beautiful Paul Newman. What a sad year for Hollywood this year. What with Charlton Heston and Richard Widmark dying this year...now the lovely Paul Newman.
We will never see Hollywood produce legends like this anymore, and we need to be thankful to those who have gone and also the ones who are still around, and that is not many now.
Paul Newman was a very graceful, honest, and thankfuland loving man and actor to ever grace our screens, and from the actors who are around today,...we will never see that again from the Hollywood of today and the future...most of today's actors are more for themselves, well god bless Mr Newman for setting the bar too high...and all the other actors especially form today's Hollywood are well underneath that bar...and will never ever come close.
RIP MR COOL HAND LUCK,
All the love and best wishes to his family, and close friends it will affect.

He was a real heart throb when he was younger, but never seemed to realise, not like today's so called stars who milk it for everything they can get. I've never done anything like this before, but Mr. Newmans death has saddened me greatly. From moviestar to a hugely compassionate man, with no sense of greed, only the need to give back to others less fortunate, this more than anything shows what a truly great man he was. How sad that more so-called "stars" don't/won't follow his example.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May they find solace in their memories and the love they shared.

A True moviestar, but NEVER hitting the headlines unless it was about his role in another of his movies being amazing,+oscar-winning class, then he,d go on to win the ocar for the role he,d played in that which had made all the headlines!!!
The 1st time i saw "Butch+Sundance",there were no video recorders....how i wish there had been!!!!!!CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE IF VIDEO RECORDERS HAD ONLY JUST COME ONTO THE MARKET TO BUY THEN?!!EVERYBODY WOULDVE BEEN OUTSIDE THEIR LOCAL ELECTRICAL STORES/SHOPS HOPING THEY,ED GET 1 BEFORE THE STOCKS RAN OUT!!!
Very few LEGENDS like PAUL NEWMAN couldve done that, and evem fewer of today,s top Hollywood moviestar,s could, not even Tom Hanks or Robert De Nero, who just don,t make a bad film today!!!
All of us have our all-time fave moviestar,s no matter what age we are. There were "Great,s before PAUL NEWMAN,and there,s been "Great,s" since too....
BUT when you look back to the year,s in which "Butch+Sundance" "hit the screens"orf every cinema around the World, there were a group of "Great,s"all making Great movies!!Steve McQueen arguably the best of them, APART FROM PAUL NEWMAN!!In"Butch+Sundance,he made Robert Redford a "Great"!!So it,s great to hear that Redford led the Tributes to his greatest friends tragic loss.
