The troubled Welsh actor, 40-who famously answered the door in just his pants for the hit film-left his own special delivery after being interviewed for Q Radio.
A source said: "Rhys and some friends were down in the reception being quite boisterous. They had obviously been sinking quiet a few drinks.
"He was particularly excited when the postman arrived. He went outside and was singing 'hey Mr Postman' and 'Special delivery' and giggling to himself manically.
Ifans then stunned onlookers and staff by pulling a pair of men's Calvin Klein pants out of his pocket.
Our source added: "I don't know what was in there, but it made a couple of people laugh and then Rhys crouched down and slipped the pants between a couple of sacks of mail - all the time laughing away to himself."
"When the postie arrived back he looked inside his sack and pulled out a piece of underwear he looked as if he was getting ready to gag."
The star whose behaviour has sparked concerns for his wellbeing ever since he was dumped by Sienna Miller in June made a speedy exit from the scene.
But the raging postman incensed by the prank stormed into reception to complain holding the pants at arm's length.
A Bauer Media spokesman confirmed: "We did have an unofficial compliant from Royal Mail about a "rogue" item in our post. But no further action has been taken."
Rhys Ifans-who is currently on holiday in Ibiza-was unavailable for comment.
