Panto pay beats slump

THE credit crunch is BEHIND YOU . . . oh, yes it is . . . if you're starring in panto this year.

Theatre bosses are reporting record ticket sales for the festive shows, meaning Mother Goose is laying a golden egg for big names.

Former X factor star Chico will bank £8,000 a week in Aladdin at the Civic Theatre, Darlington.

Leslie Grantham - Dirty Den in East- Enders - gets double that in Aladdin at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings.

Shane Richie - Enders' Alfie Moon - will earn £30,000 a week as Aladdin in High Wycombe, while Torchwood star John Barrowman gets the same as Robin Hood in Cardiff. And Gray O'Brien - Corrie killer Tony Gordon - will bag £12,000 a week in Aladdin at Manchester Opera House.

Roxanne Pallett - Emmerdale's Jo Sugden - will earn £10,000 a week in Cinderella at Newcastle's Theatre Royal.

Nick Thomas, chairman of Qdos Entertainment, which puts on UK pantos, said: "The signs are we'll have a great turnout in 2009.

"It is clear that people still want their families to have an enjoyable time at Christmas."
