Star Freida Pinto's dumped fiance reveals movie stole his happiness

THE heartbroken fiancé of Slumdog Millionaire beauty Freida Pinto today reveals how the film's success and her "infatuation" with co-star Dev Patel finished their relationship.

Dumped Rohan Antao blames the hit movie and her on-screen lover for wrecking his wedding plans.

As gorgeous Freida (pictured above in USA GQ) prepares to walk down the red carpet at tonight's Oscars on the arm of the Slumdog star, Rohan told the News of the World: "She ended it with me after getting close to Dev Patel.

"Now everywhere I go I see them on billboards. I am devastated."

In an exclusive interview Rohan, 24, revealed how Freida:

FORCED him to keep their engagement secret to boost her career.
IGNORED his pleas to stop spending so much time with Dev.
ENDED their 16-month relationship in a phone call while she was promoting Slumdog with her co-star.

The blockbuster-up for ten Oscars- has made overnight global stars of young Londoner Dev and Freida. It tells the story of sweethearts Latika and Jamal, who rises from the slums of Mumbai to win India's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? show.

But Rohan fumed: "I hate the film. It wrecked my relationship. As soon as it became a success and she started spending all her time with Dev, she ended it."

RED CARPET PAIR: Dev and Freida

Rohan first fell for Freida at university in Mumbai six years ago, where she was studying for an arts BA.

Marketing executive Rohan recalled: "We were from different groups but I thought she was stunning and we had so much in common.

"We spent all our time together, just the two of us. We were a modern couple, so we didn't need a chaperone."

In September 2007 they started dating properly. By then Freida, 24, had done an acting course and was working in TV and modelling, appearing in magazines and ads for Wrigley's chewing gum and Skoda.

Rohan said: "We were from different fields but our friendship and respect for each other made it special. We both agreed we wanted to spend our lives together."

The couple enjoyed shopping together, eating out and watching movies. He smiled: "It was the happiest time of my life. Freida was lovely and I felt complete with her.

"If I'd had a busy day at work I would meet her and we'd hug. Her embrace was amazing and you could forget about all your worries.

"That's what I loved about her the most. There's more, but we're private people and that's between her and me."

In December 2007-within days of Freida winning the role of Latika- Rohan proposed on the rooftop of a bar in Mumbai and the couple celebrated their engagement with a party for 30 family and friends in Goa.

"It was beautiful," he said. "We gave a speech about how we would love each other forever. Our families were happy for us. But we never spoke about when we would marry. We'd decided our careers would come first."

Little did he know how much that decision would cost him. Slumdog turned out to be the young Indian actress's big break. "She was ambitious and worked hard," said Rohan.

Freida's life was soon transformed. Rohan sighed: "The film bosses didn't want her to be engaged. It would affect the whole emphasis of the film, the love story. I had no say in it.."

At one party Rohan met Oscar-nominated film director Danny Boyle. "He was very down to earth," he recalled, "but I had to lie all evening and say I was Freida's boyfriend, not her fiancé."

Rohan gradually started to feel their relationship slip through his fingers as she spent more time away from him-jetting round the world promoting the film with gawky 18-year-old Skins star Dev.

He went on: "I didn't go with her. I had my own work to do and we weren't supposed to be seen together. She told me it was a requirement, so I had to get on with it.

"But it was all too much too soon for her. She was staying in five-star hotels and being driven by chauffeurs-it was quite a change.

"And she was always with Dev, doing press publicity. They certainly did a brilliant job promoting a film about a couple in love! I knew there was chemistry between them, but she said she had no feelings towards him at that time."

But Rohan's frustration boiled over when Freida was again with him at the Toronto Film Festival last September.

He sent Dev an angry text message questioning: "You do know she is engaged, don't you?" Dev never responded.

Rohan went on: "I asked Freida to spend less time with Dev, but she refused. She was comfortable with him, and we were talking over the phone less and less. I was ticked off with Dev-and her."

In interviews Dev has never hidden his admiration for Freida, even referring to her as a "soulmate". In one he admitted: "I haven't got a girlfriend, but Freida, my co-star, is gorgeous."

And she has spoken of "instant chemistry" when she first met Dev.

Rohan fumed: "I feel bitter towards Dev. If you are engaged to someone, the last thing you want to be thinking about is whether Dev Patel is telling her how wonderful she is."

Then last month, while the pair were promoting the film in Los Angeles, Rohan got the call he was dreading.

"She decided she didn't want to be with me any more. She said she wanted us to be friends. But how can I be when she has destroyed my faith in love?

"She is infatuated with Dev. I don't know if they were having a sexual relationship but if I came face to face with him I would have things to say."

Both Freida and Dev have refused to comment on claims they are a couple, although this week, co-star Anil Kapoor claimed the Slumdog lovers are dating for real, and were even spotted in High Street jewellers H. Samuel on Valentine's Day.

It marked a bitter end to Rohan's relationship with Freida. He admitted: "This is a very hard time for me, because as much as I don't want to let go, I have to.

"I wish her success in her career, but I can't watch the Oscars, and I don't want to watch the film-it wrecked our love."

How is this Dev's fault? While reading this story, all I thought to myself is, "OK. So, of course they're promoting the film, so of course they're going to be together. And they're co-stars and play lovers in the film, that means they've grown close, right? So, is it necessarily Dev's fault for becoming good friends with her? Also, JUST BECAUSE he says she's gorgeous (by the way, who wouldn't?!), doesn't mean that he's trying to steal her away from Rohan." Simply, I think this is a classic Hollywood story. Once the girl becomes famous, she completely forgets about what is important. I don't think Freida's that way- but if she had any true respect for Rohan, she wouldn't have just blown him away into the dust like that. I understand what the film's bosses are trying to do- promote the film, and they probably don't want an engagement on top of that- but having her to hide it at all times. C'mon? I understand not BLURTING out 'I'm engaged!' but hiding it from the director? Psh.
Anyhow, I think she has feelings for Dev, and I would too if I were in her position. He's much more charming, and seemingly down-to-earth and caring than Rohan, and a tad more talented and handsome. Anyhow, I'm confused and I don't know. All I know is, I'm going to forget this story and go purchase me a copy of the 'Slumdog Millionaire' DVD. :)

I hear many people say, Freida and Dev look "lovely" together- and yes they do, but a relationship shouldn't be based off that. I understand completely if Freida fell for Dev- because I'm sure I would too- he's handsome, charming, talented, a funny goofball, but also really smart and mature- that I don't blame her. But at the same time, this is solely Hollywood's fault! The producers or whoever!... shouldn't have been telling her to hide her relationship. I understand not blurting out her engagement, but completely hiding it- especially from the director- is pitiful. However, I'm not sure if this story is even true- so why should I budge in, and judge? I'm simply going to say- Hollywood is materialistic- but I think Freida's a sweet girl... say all you want, but she is... and I simply think she enjoys her time around Dev, and that's the direction she wants to go, and not look back.

Hmm, sounds like a scorned lover to me! If he cares so much for Freida, he wouldn't be blabbing all a newspaper for the world to dissect. She dumped him so what? She's entitled to live her life the way she chooses and he just has to suck it up. I also can't believe he's harrassing Dev Patel like that, how old is this Rohan guy anyway? Because Dev sounds a lot more mature than he does. He and Freida have chemistry, that's obvious, and if they want to explore that then fine. Mr Antao should just move the hell on.

It's sad that Freida is infatuated with Dev Patel who is much younger to. Its not fair to Rohan. She will realise the pain of glamour in the years to come when Dev dumps her. I definitely sympathise with Rohan who has given her the real love. But life is like that, Rohan this is a cruel lesson for you, though no one would expect these things to happen in their life. Hey, Guy, she may be beautiful, but beauty is only skin deep. Obviously, in her it doesn't go any deeper. She is an opportunist and now you know. If she would go to someone else for her career now, what would it have been like if you were married??? with children??? Think about it and say "so long, it's been good to know ya".

I know how you feel, Rohan, but if she dumped you for that Dev guy, she couldn't have been worth it! Its immaterial whether Frieda is gorgeous or not. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and more than that it is the qualities, attitude and the personality traits of the person which makes them special.

Well we are yet to hear Friedas story - the world knows she was engaged through this "sad" tale of a jilted lover but I think he has been one of those dangerous "kiss and tell" types who is washing dirty linen in public. Bringing out in a vieled manner all their intimate details, knowing well it is bad for a persons publicity. WOuld he really care if she came back to him. I think one should act with dignity. Not look for hype and destruction. Because once you indulge in negative behavior you do not know when it hits you.

Moreover we really do not know how he has been harassing both Dev & Frieda - after all she is a working woman. He admits have texted Dev. Well if I were Freida - whether Dev or not - I would have thanked my stars that this was only an engagement and got out of the mess sooner or later. That is her right.

I dont think her ex could have ever accepted her fame.

He is not a jilted lover but an MCP who is just humiliated.

He had to make a point of saying that she was "from a different group" than he -- basically that she was beneath him (at least in his estimation, anyway).

He also went to great lengths to make sure we all knew they were sleeping together:
Saying first, "we were always together, just the two of us. We were a modern couple and didn't need a chaperone."
Then he reiterates with some kiss-and-tell, "her embrace was amazing... That’s what I loved about her the most. There’s more, but we’re private people and that’s between her and me."

What a jerk! A far, far cry from being a gentleman!

Given that he is a self-admitted liar -- saying he lied about a variety of things to many people; like claiming to be her boyfriend rather than her fiance' to the movie director -- one has to wonder how much of THIS story is a fabrication.

I may be reading between the lines, but it seems obvious from the article that the "ex" became possessive and controlling when she became famous. Can you imagine how you would feel if your fiancee started sending threatening e-mails to coworkers and demanding you not see them? Publicity is part of her job- are the two lead actors in a romantic picture supposed to say they hate each other? Freida is an actress who had an incredibly lucky once in a lifetime break. If her fiancee truly had "respect" for her, as he says in the article, he would have been celebrating her success. She is lucky to have discovered his controlling nature before she married them. It's easy for him to say their "careers would come first" when he had no expectations of her succeeding.

Dev and Freida were both interviewed for the Oscars and both stated that they are just friends who have been travelling together promoting the movie. There is nothing in this interview that disputes that. Her fiance shouldn't have been so jealous and believed her word.

Looking at some of these comments,I am struck by those who say that Freida is just an ordinary Bollywood actress, isn't that pretty, and is destined to disappear after her fleeting fifteen minutes of fame. Ironically most of those comments are made by Indian males who IMHO have an ax to grind with Freida for dumping her fiance. Unfortunately for them,Freida was in the Indian equivalent of Gone with the Wind.

Freida is a STAR and will continue to ascend in her acting career regardless of those who condemn her for dumping her fiance.

Frieda is not a good actress. Will not be surprised if she bombs out in Hollywood. Maybe Bollywood she may have some luck. I believe Hollywood rejects are not welcomed in Bollywood. she's okish, tons and tons of girls like her in bbay, i've dated many and trust me im no tom cruise (though a lil better that this rohan dude),and that Dev patel, cmon he looks like a boy version of olive oyl, and as for Freida, trust me nothings gonna happen to her career, nada zilch, this is her 15 minutes of fame and then she can go back to selling soap on screen. if she thinks hollywoods waiting for her, shes in for a big surprise, i work in the industry here and i know how it works.

and the thing is that she wont even make it in bollywood as they're far hotter chickz then her waitin in line (or in casting couches he hehe)

she'd have to be atleast Padma lakshmi's level ( since shes got those kind of looks) to even break in2 hollywood, but padma lakshmi is/was way hotter

To all the people who call Rohan a "loser" - why? Because he isn't a famous rich celebrity? This is really a pathetic view. He is a human being like anyone else who feels bad about what happened.

To Rohan and I say: If you love someone and that person does not love you back, you should not be together in the first place. Focus your love and energy on someone who will return it. So ultimately this was for the best. Now you are free to find a woman who will love you back.

Also I would say we have not heard Freida's point of view so no one should rush to judge her either.

Freida and Dev have much more in common than Freida and Rohan: they are both in an extremely successful movie, it was "the big break" for both of them, they are both talented and good looking and charismatic, they will both be hot commodities once the film wins best picture tonight at the Oscars. What we have here in this interview is one side of the story and who of us can know what is true or not? But people outgrow people all the time. That's life. Move on.

Couldn't agree more! Why these two are getting all the credit is beyond me, the children were simply magnificent and made the film, and for all those saying the guy is ugly and she made the right decision...love isn't about what a person looks like, Friedo has obviously thought she can do better now than this guy thanks to her five minute fame, i'm guessing she'll live to regret this later on in life.

I am appalled by some of the comments on here. Who on earth do people think they are - perfect and gorgeous it would seem. This seems to be a perfectly normal situation. OK she was in a relationship and engaged but she met someone else and realised her relationship was not right and ended it. Big deal - happens everywhere to anyone every day. Whether it lasts with Dev Patel is neither here nor there - fact is she must have known her relationship was not right. I can understand her fiance is hurt and upset but he isnt the first and he wont be the last - get over it and move on. The only difference here is that he feels he can make some money out of his ex - makes you wonder how much he really loved her in the first place.

This is indeed a common occurence in life when two people are thrown together at work either it be film, TV or in the office or in any other industry. They keep meeting at meal times and rest time and baturally talk about all kinds of things laugh and giggle and inevitably get attracted to each other.
There is no remedy for this it is one of life's fate. There is always an injured person this is the sad part of this.

Once the 15 minutes of fame is over and all the hoopla about this slumdog film is forgotten, she may regret her move for the bright lights of New York, L.A. & London - its only a mirage or illusion that's why Hollywood's other name is Tinsel town. There are literally thousands of would be actors and actresses but only about 1% get to work, its a fact.
Let her go Rohan there are others, its not the end of the world.

Dev and Freida look lovely together. With the time they spent together promoting the movie there is no doubt they will fall for each other. But lets see when the heights of fame of the movie died down and both of them have a career of them own, maybe then Dev & freida will have time to access each other. To Rohan the scumbag, with your looks and Dev's looks plus the other men Freida is seeing on her world tour, I dont think she has regrets. The only regret is having you spill your emotions in public and being paid on her expense. Move on you loser!
