Sherlock Holmes gay shock in new movie

GUY SCENE: Ritchie
GUY SCENE: Ritchie

IT'S shockingly eleMENtary, my queer Watson.

Super sleuth Sherlock Holmes is to be portrayed in a GAY way in Guy Ritchie's new flick.

The fictional him-vestigator is seen SHARING A BED with his dear, dear, Dr Watson and also enjoying some man-to-man wrestling with his close chum.

Speaking about the film, in which he plays Sherlock, Robert Downey Jr said: "We're two men who happen to be room-mates, wrestle a lot and share a bed. It's badass."

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary character is famous for donning his deerstalker hat, puffing on a pipe and solving mysteries with his trusted sidekick.

Jude Law. who plays Watson in the film, added: "Guy wanted to make this about the relationship between Watson and Holmes. They're both mean and complicated."

All the makings of a thrilling oooh-dunnit, obviously!

Watson's wife always felt like a beard. One he cared for, yes, but a beard nonetheless. The books were really subtextual anyway about Holmes and Watson's relationship-- lots of subtext that implied that they were the most important people to each other, that their relationship was the most important thing.

I think it's fabulous if they decide to play up that angle. Not at all out of character for the books, and great to see on screen. I doubt they'll be explicit, but I'd love to see Jude Law and RDJ make out! So much pretty!

Let's also do the same with James Bond, Simon Templar and all the other male characters in films.

Oooh. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in bed together? YUM!

Look how worried some are if Fictional characters are played as GAY. What a riot! Hilarious even. This society is warped. Straight people are so boring and sick in the head, they are forced to look for alternatives. Free at last!!!!!! It's time for asexuals and gays to be noticed! For how sick this world is, least it's going in the right direction!

Hey,
This is great! Why not? I think the fact that there is interest in further exploring these famous literary characters in such a film is a testement to Doyle and his creations. Of course in those days - men DID indeed sleep together, said "I love you" to each other in both in writing and in letters - whether they were lovers or not. I look forward to seeing what the film presents.

"I have read all the Holmes' stories and never once did he commit as gross an indecency as is suggested."
SH aside, which century are you living in?

What makes me mad is that in the novels and short stories, Holmes is distainful of emotion. He wouldn't be with anyone, male or female.

It's understandable that they may make Holmes homosexual based on the fact that he is never with women, but Watson has a way with the ladies.

Holmes even told Watson, "The fairer sex is your department."

Now any future Sherlock Holmes films will have at least some sexual tension between Holmes and Watson. Grrr.

why is guy ritchie making this movie

Please, please, nobody get into the 'Merry Wives of Watson' argument. Goodness only knows how many wives he allegedly had. Mary Morstan, the heroine of the Sign of Four, is a dead cert., but as for loving her very much - well. She appears in that book and then is never mentioned by name again, is always away staying with friends, and very rarely features at all, except when Watson idly comments that he decided to go and see Holmes at Baker Street/nip down to Kent with Holmes to stay in a double-bedded room (Man with the Twisted Lip, if you want to check)/otherwise avoid spending home-time with his wife. And then she conveniently dies while Holmes is 'dead', whereupon Holmes secretly buys Watson's practice undercover so that Watson can move back in again.

And then he *might* have got married again, or it might have been a chronology mess-up on ACD's part, which seems rather more likely since he was always messing up his own chronology.

"Enema-entry, my dear Watson?"

By Jaded Woody.. Posted February 23 2009 at 4:42 PM.

FYI - Watson actually was married twice and is busy with Kelly Reilly in this movie He champions marriage to Holmes wh appears to be a dbit more more committment phobic than gay. "Beauty is in
the eye of the behioder and since these two guys
only ever existed on paper your guess is as good as
mine. so if you find the shoe fits, let them wear it!

Oh, Conan Doyle would love it! He was a friend to Oscar Wilde and dropped a million hints that more was going on between Holmes and Watson than he could legally publish at that time. :)

I don't see a problem if they want to portray a character as gay. What I am puzzled about is your hatefull use of the word queer.

Sherlock Holmes gay? Where's the evidence for this? I have read all the Holmes' stories and never once did he commit as gross an indecency as is suggested. How dare Ritchie try this on? He should stick to his low brow 'gangsta' flicks and leave real literature alone. It's political correctness gone mad!

its only a movie !! get over it !

By mike.. Posted February 22 2009 at 6:26 PM.

Actually, there are lots of hints in the books that ACD considered SH gay and that the relationship between them could be more than met the eye.

Cool - I say.

Robedrt Downey Jr still looks a bit ravaged since his drug binge days. It's in the eyes.Sorry.Don't rate him now.

I've read the script, and the movie doesn't portray Holmes as gay: far from it, in fact. Yes, there's a wrestling scene but it's more Fight Club than gay club. And yes he and Watson are living together, but not sleeping together: Watson is already engaged. And Holmes never wears a deerstalker in the books, that was only ever in the illustrations. It's a pretty fun, faithful version of the original adventure stories.

Sherlock holmes gay ? Ha,sir arthur conan doyle will be turning in his grave.

By Mickey.. Posted February 22 2009 at 8:56 AM.

Yeah, why not make them gay? It's not like Holmes was portrayed as asexual and Watson had a wife that he loved very much! :(
