SUNDERLAND boss Steve Bruce has had a £3.5million bid for Rangers stopper Madjid Bougherra rejected.
The Black Cats desperately need to shore up a defence which has shipped 18 goals in their last six league games.
Sunderland are without a league win since beating Arsenal on November 21 and have taken just 10 points from a possible 30 since then.
Bruce lost out to Tottenham in the chase for Portsmouth's Younes Kaboul, prompting the move for Bougherra, left, whose interest in the Africa Cup of Nations ended last week with a 4-0 semi-final defeat by Egypt.
The 27-year-old, signed for £2.5m from Charlton in 2008, has two years left on his current deal at Ibrox.
It's believed Bruce, who is prepared to beat Bougherra's £15,000 weekly wage by £10,000, will come back with an improved offer before the transfer window closes at 5pm tomorrow.

the bank will sell him. bogie is a good player in a bad league not prem class but cud make a good bench warmer for Sunderland 3.5mil is very good dough for him not worth anymore than that.

£8m for Bougherra???? You're having a laugh Robbie son, go and have a lie down. £4-5 million will see him out the door and as for buying Tonel and Stranzl, any money that is made from the sale of Bougherra, or indeed any other player will go to the bank. I'm not sure if you've heard but Gers are in a bit of financial trouble and owe some money!! No one will be signing so behave yourself.

I guess Bougie is worth more than 10 millions. He's done two great seasons at Ibrox, he's improving more and more. Look at his performance with Algeria at the African Cup. Mr. Walter is aware that he has a precious centre back, and he won't let him go, only to the English league four tops.

What are Rangers playing at? All that money they owe,and just ignoring it! if I was in debt to the banks like that and someone offered to buy my car,I'd bite their hand off! Rangerss seem to think the debt will just go away;well,it won't!

i think sunderland will have to pay at least 8 million to get bougherra and if they did that i think he will be sold but walter will have to bring 2 centre backs in for about 2 million each i would buy tonel and martin stranzl and bank the rest of the money that would be 4 million
