Defeat against Dan Petrescu's side on Wednesday would end Gers' hopes of making it through to the next stage of the Champions League
Boss Smith will send his side out in the Steaua Stadium with simple instructions - do better than they did in the 4-1 home mauling 12 days ago.
He said: "Away Champions League games are always difficult, but we have to make sure we acquit ourselves better than we did in the first game.
"It was unusual in that you had three deflections for three goals, but our performance wasn't good enough, even after getting off to a great start. We looked the more nervous team and didn't have any real authority in the game.
"You would have thought the start would settle us down, but it took us about 25 minutes to get going.
"The strangest thing about the game was that our best spell was just after half-time, yet during that spell we lost three goals.
"We've a lot to make up for and we've got to make sure we do that.
"Everybody takes a wee bit of pride in what they're doing, but that was dented by the result in the first game. Nothing Unirea did surprised us,
except they pressed the ball a little bit further up the pitch than I thought they might have done, but that's to their credit.
"You're never quite sure whether their approach was born out of the fact they had lost an early goal or whether that was something they wanted to do, but whatever it was, they did it well. What the result of the first game means is that we've given the initiative in the group to Unirea.
"If we were looking to qualify from the group prior to the game you would have said the two matches against them were going to be vital.
"They've now got the upper hand and instead of going away from home to look for a half-decent result, we've got to go away and look to win.
"If we can get a decent result over there, after that we've got the home game against Stuttgart which I'd argue is a huge game for us.
"There might still be a situation where we have the opportunity to go through and, after the two home results we've had, you wouldn't have imagined that would be the case."
