RIVER City has signed up a really BIG star to bring some lighter moments to the soap - comedy actor Tom Urie.

The heavyweight thesp is set to arrive in Shieldinch as Big Bob, Shellsuit Bob's uncle.

And he's immediately at the centre of a family battle as another huge Scots star - Una McLean - joins as his mum, Molly Adams.

He is pulled in different directions by her and screen sister Scarlett Adams (Sally Howitt) - who is Shellsuit Bob's mum.

A River City insider said: "Tom will be fantastic. He'll bring some real comedy to the part. But there will be fireworks when his mum also comes to stay and clashes with Scarlett.

"It'll be hilarious - especially when he tries to give his nephew advice on the ways of life."

Bob (Stephen Purdon) is chuffed to bits that his uncle comes to stay. And our insider added: "Seeing them side by side is hilarious as there's such a size difference."

Tom - who's starred in Chewin' The Fat and has recently been in the stage version of Tutti Frutti with Dawn Steele - will start in the BBC1 Scotland show in the New Year. The 40-year-old, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, is a big fan of the soap and has told friends that he "can't wait to join".

Our insider added: "Tom has been in for rehearsals - the cast love him and they have had a great laugh together. He'll provide some much-needed light relief."
