IT'S the great escAPE!

Macaque monkey Yousef made a dramatic bid for freedom yesterday by breaking out of Edinburgh Zoo.

The four-year-old scaled an electric fence to escape his pen and ended up a mile away on the roof of the Capital Hotel.

The furry fugitive was finally surrounded by a team of zoo workers who watched as their colleague Darren McGarry, 39, fired tranquiliser darts at him. Keeper Lorna Hughes then got onto the roof to pick him up.

Hotel manager Will O'Donnell said: "It was pretty dramatic."

A zoo spokesman said: "We'll ensure it doesn't happen again."
