The Edinburgh cop will lock horns with his Glasgow rival DCI Matt Burke in the one-off BBC special.
And the super sleuths will end up in a furious confrontation when a body is found at Harthill, Lanarkshire - halfway between their two cities.
Rebus star Ken Stott, 53 - who also once appeared in STV's Taggart - will return to his role from the hit ITV show to star alongside Alex Norton, 59.
A BBC insider said: "It's the showdown that everybody wants to see - Rebus versus Taggart.
"It's a very funny script and the first time the two of them have come together on screen.
"Both characters are excellent detectives, so it'll be fascinating to see who comes out on top. It also addresses the whole Edinburgh-Glasgow rivalry. The viewers will love it."
It's thought the BBC will film the mini-episode this week, ahead of this year's Children In Need bash on November 20.
