New alerts as victims mop up

WEATHERMEN WARN OF MORE HEAVY RAINFALL TO COME

FLOOD-hit Scots are battening down the hatches as weathermen warn of MORE heavy rainfall.

In the worst affected area - Dumfries and Galloway - locals were last night frantically mopping up before the fresh deluge.

Among the properties hit was the constituency office shared by Labour's Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown and his MSP colleague Elaine Murray.

Russell said: "Carpets and a computer system have been ruined but we have not been as badly hit as other people in the area."

Thousands more sandbags are being sent to the Borders towns of Dumfries, Hawick, Selkirk and Peebles while insurers expect claims running into hundreds of thousands.

Today south and west Scotland is likely to be hit, with more downpours on Monday and Tuesday.

Flood alerts have been issued in Perthshire, where a number of rivers are close to bursting their banks. A Met Office spokesman said last night: "The rainfall is not expected to be particularly heavy, but falling on saturated ground, it's a worry."
