Paedophile backs Mark's Law bid

STUART LEGGATE: IT WOULD CONTROL SEX OFFENDERS IN A BETTER WAY

KILLER paedophile Stuart Leggate has sensationally BACKED our campaign to bring in Mark's Law.

His victim's brave mum Margaret Ann Cummings has fought for the move, which would force authorities to warn parents when a sex offender moves into their community.

And Leggate's support is the FIRST time a convicted child abuser has backed the legislation.

In an earlier letter, he writes: "From the day the News of the World printed a petition over Mark's Law I wanted to sign it and send it back.

"I would support Mark's Law all the way. If a parent knew that an offender was in their midst they could keep an eye on them and it would help kids stay safe.

"If Margaret Ann knew about me, Mark would not have been allowed near me or to speak to me. Margaret Ann could have kept an eye on the situation.

"Parents shouldn't be kept in the dark. They have a right to know. I would want to know if I was a parent."

Leggate admits fiends like him could be targeted by vigilantes who are furious that perverts are living in their area.

I think it would be effective. It would help to control sex offenders

He says: "It may cause trouble at first - people don't take too kindly to child abusers.

"What I don't agree with is vigilantes, those who take the law into their own hands and run offenders underground."

A pilot scheme currently being tested in Tayside allows parents, carers and guardians to ask police to check out anyone who has regular, unsupervised access to children.

Only people who ask for the information receive it, but the police are expected to reveal whether the named person has any child sex convictions.

In his letter, Leggate adds: "Would I support Mark's Law? The answer to that is yes.

"It may cause bother in here (prison) for me. But I don't care what they say or think, it's my decision.

"I think it would be effective. It would help to control sex offenders in a better way.

"Something has to be done. If it isn't, sadly Mark won't be the last victim to die at the hands of a sex offender."
