A DESPERATE cancer sufferer told last night how he has been struck down by the MRSA superbug 12 TIMES.

Retired cop Bill Grant struggles to walk as the infection ravages the flesh on both of his legs.

Now the 63-year-old - who insists he caught the condition from dirty hospital wards - wants to sue for compensation over his ordeal.

Bill, of Glenrothes, Fife, raged: "I have been completely let down by the NHS - this infection has ruined my life.

"Every time I think I'm over one MRSA infection, another one comes along. I am totally alone. Folk are afraid to come near me. They think I'll infect them.

"My legs are turning black and it's getting more and more painful to walk. I want to sue the NHS. My quality of life has been destroyed."

Bill, who has bladder cancer, first caught the superbug in 2002 after receiving treatment at Glasgow's Royal Infirmary.

He's been fighting the potentially deadly infection ever since. And he's endured new bouts of the bug almost twice a year.

Bill's most recent attack of MRSA was diagnosed in April, after treatment at Glenrothes Hospital. He fumed: "Our hospitals are filthy - I never felt safe being examined. Doctors are just desperate to get rid of patients and free up beds."

Bill, who now needs constant care and treatment, added: "Each time I am diagnosed with MRSA, I am given medication to treat the infection and it seems to work.

"But I am in and out of hospital to treat my cancer and within months, I find myself with MRSA again."

Fife Health Board said: "We cannot comment on individual cases."

A Greater Glasgow Health Board spokesman added: "Infection control is one of our highest priorities."

But Bill insisted: "It's time the Government took notice and tried to improve standards."
