Redmond, above right - known as Geo to pals - made enemies ripping off a number of cocaine suppliers and trying to muscle into the lucrative security industry.
And the gangster effectively signed his own death warrant by running up debts with the boss of a major drugs supply line.
When the cash was not forthcoming, the multi-millionaire told gangland cronies: "Geo has to go."
Redmond was killed and pal John McGuire, 42, above left, injured after an assassin opened fire at the Waldorf bar in Glasgow city centre on Monday night.
Redmond, also 42, from Blackhill, Glasgow, had links to jailed murderer Robert 'Birdman' O'Hara and members of the McGovern crime clan.
He was also suspected of being behind arson attacks on building sites guarded by Ruchill Security, run by feared Bobby 'The Devil' Dempster, 59.
A gangland source said: "Geo and Birdman were collecting protection money from Dempster, among others. But after Birdman was jailed in 2005 bosses saw no reason to continue paying Geo.
"He was increasingly making enemies for reneging on drugs debts and was forever looking over his shoulder."
It has also emerged cops were tipped off TWO YEARS AGO that a murder bid was likely.
Our source added: "The police were told he was a candidate for a hit and took an interest in where he went and who he met.
"He was increasingly being asked to repay drugs bills but ignored them - until his main creditor decided enough was enough."
Cops are still hunting Monday's hitman.
