The hoodlums opened fire on the pair in Tollcross, Glasgow, just two hours after dozens of youths were involved in a vicious gang battle in the area.
The 16-year-old lad and 20-year-old female - who are not being named - were rushed to the city's Royal Infirmary after the shooting late on Friday night.
The woman was released after receiving treatment but the boy was detained. Last night doctors described his condition as "stable".
Cops are now probing whether the attempted hit was linked to the earlier gang fight.
A local revealed around 30 youths battled each other with snooker CUES, KNIVES and BOTTLES.
A Strathclyde Police insider said: "We're trying to trace everyone involved in that battle.
"We suspect we could find our gunman among the nutters who had been brawling in the middle of the street."
Det Sgt Alex McArthur said there were "six to eight men" in the group that attacked the duo. He added: "It is only by good fortune that the woman and teenage boy were not more seriously injured.
"This happened in a residential area. I urge local people to come forward if they have any information which might help us.
"I appeal to anyone who witnessed a disturbance in the area or can help identify the suspects - who made off towards Newbank Gardens - to come forward as a matter of urgency."
