COPS CALLED AFTER FLU PANIC

WORRIED medics called 999 to ask cops to save their bacon when a crowd of swine flu patients turned nasty.

Fears that Glasgow's Cardonald Health Centre was out of anti-viral drugs kicked off a near riot.

Patients who had been told the centre was a 24-hour swine flu clinic were furious when they turned up at 8pm to find the doors closed.

A Strathclyde Police insider said: "The situation spiralled out of control.

"They were banging on windows and being aggressive."

The patients, many elderly and with flu symptoms, were hoping to be tested for the virus and to get Tamiflu.

One, who asked not to be named, said: "We were told it was a 24-hour clinic and yet they shut it before 8pm, even when there were people wanting treatment. No wonder folk got angry."

A spokeswoman for NHS Glasgow and Clyde said: "We asked the police to help us with traffic management. As the centre was so busy we had to ask some people to return the next day."

Scotland's swine flu toll hit 922 this weekend.
