Let's be honest, it was just good to win something - even if few of us could remember where the last games were held, or who won any of the medals.
But before an inch of running track has been laid down, the initial budget of £373million has already soared by £81million.
You really don't need to know the details of who's paying what.
Ultimately it will cost us a fortune.
We're already bailing out the banks and now we'll be footing the bill for games that, in truth, most people don't even care about.
They will be eclipsed by the London Olympics in 2012 - and we'll never look like anything more than the poor relation who turns up at a fancy wedding wearing a cheap suit.
It's £454million now, and there's still five years to go.
Sorry. But I'm thinking of the difference that level of dosh could make to public services.
