Our boys in Blue

Super group join our campaign

BOY band megastars Blue are backing the News of the World's celebrated Save our Streets campaign to stamp out violence.

The newly-reformed chart-toppers posed in special T-shirts ahead of their comeback gig tonight and next week's new SOS roadshow - the first of a series we will be running round Britain.

The band, who sold more than 14 million records around the world before splitting in 2005, urged News of the World readers to get involved.

This week's roadshow is in Eltham, south-east London, and there will be more in Southampton, Ilford, Leeds, Nottingham, Swansea, Brighton and Manchester.

Singer Lee Ryan, 25, from Chatham, Kent, said: "When I was growing up, I was constantly surrounded by crime - I once saw someone murdered on the street.

"Now even more children are joining gangs out of boredom."

His bandmate Antony Costa, 27, from Edgware, north London, said: "News of the World campaigns actually get out and connect with people.

"Most discussions on knife crime are kept in the shadows - but these roadshows can begin to change attitudes."

Duncan James, 31, worries for the safety of his young daughter, growing up in Manchester. He said: "Talking about these issues is so important."

And Simon Webbe, 30, from Moss Side, Manchester, added: "We feel it's vital to point out to our fans that carrying a knife just isn't acceptable."

  • Blue play their first gig in five years at Capital FM's Summertime Ball at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in London today.

OUR Save Our Streets Roadshows resume on Wednesday in Eltham, south-east London.

The event - hosted by Sky News presenter Kay Burley - starts at 7pm at St Thomas More Comprehensive, Footscray Road.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw and Barry Mizen, whose teenage son Jimmy was murdered, will be on the panel.
