Gordon Brown: 'I will make our streets safer'

Gordon Brown

EXCLUSIVE: Prime Minister tells the News of the World his action plan for tackling Britain's problems

"THE first priority of every government is protecting the security and safety of the people.

That means taking the firm and decisive action to protect the economic security of our country. Together with other governments around the world, we are doing whatever it takes to stabilise the markets.

POLITICS BLOG: All the latest from Labour's Manchester conference

But there is another side to the current problems which must command our attention. We know that, historically, in tough economic times, there has been a rise in crimes of violence and theft.

Red tape

Just as we are acting to protect the economic security of the country, we must step up efforts to tackle crime and keep people safe on their streets and in their homes. We now have the highest number of police in our country's history and we are cutting red tape to ensure they can spend the maximum amount of time out on the street.

And for the first time in our history, every community in England now has its own local police team. Their names and phone numbers will go through every letterbox and every person in the country will have the right to call their police team, alert them to local problems, and have them dealt with.

Prison

And when we catch criminals, they will be dealt with harshly. Convicted criminals are going to prison for longer and we are toughening up community sentences so that the people serving them genuinely pay the price for their crimes.

But as we saw on yesterday's People's March For Peace, and as I discussed with the families of knife crime victims last week, violence and crime cannot be solved just by the police, the courts or the government.

It requires every person in every community to work with the police. With tough policing, tough penalties and united communities, we can keep crime down and make Britain a stronger, safer nation."

Yeah, yeah, yeah, i doubt if he even knows what a street in Britain looks like. He's just a Socialist destroyer. Giving the country away to the EU. Wierd how such obviously intelligent people can do the absolute worst for the country, in the cause of their political believes, totally ignoring the fact that there are 50 million true British people who will be cursed with his actions

By Edward.. Posted September 22 2008 at 4:53 PM.

Was it April Fools Day when Gordon Brown made that statement.

By Betty Windsor.. Posted September 22 2008 at 4:27 PM.

Following Brown's politics from Canada, Mr. Brown is an arrogant and incompetent dimwit peddling lunatic policies most of the time, or semi-reasonable policies too late only to save his arse. He cares only about himself. That you good citizens ended up with him is a shameful travesty. The sooner you good folks have someone sensible in, the better.

I wish the cowards who run this country would grow a pair and toughen up

By uri gregorov.. Posted September 21 2008 at 10:08 PM.

First step for improving our streets? General election! Now! Simple really...

11 years of Labour misrule and squandering has had an effect.

Bow out, if not gracefully, then immediately!

By SteveC.. Posted September 21 2008 at 6:49 PM.

This man is unbelievable. His new idea is that we will now be able to call the police, and have our problems[crime] dealt with. Who comes up with this drivel? Brown, Smith, Straw?

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

By cww.. Posted September 21 2008 at 12:07 PM.

The first paragraph of Brown's statement says it all. (It is Governments' duty to protect the public). This Government (wether under Brown or Blair) has proved incapable of this, they have let in every Tom, Dick and tallyban they could. Their Law and order programmes are a joke (lock them up and let them out as soon as possible no matter who they are). I could go on and on, Department by Department, Minister by Minister but whats the point there isn't one Department (or Minister) that has been successful, including his own (Treasury) (anyone can borrow money that others [US] have to pay back). The past 11 years have been a disaster for this Country, it's well past time for change. Any Party that breaks its promise (Lisbon Treaty) and can elect a buffoon (Prescott) as Deputy PM and a pick pocket (Brown) as PM should NEVER again be elected to run this Country.

Its just the same old waffle about commitment to the people making them safe blah blah blah...what is for sure, is that he cares naught for the real citizens of this country, England in particular.

Everything is hidden by statistics which can be manipulated to prove or disprove anything, they are just the tools of the spin party or if the correct English is used, the Lier party...that is true labour.

He has said nothing new and he will do nothing new, he is lying again, his failure to build prisons and allow courts to sentence correctly has led to a melt down of law an order.

You have to do something very serious to be locked up and then it is commuted to half the time if you behave.

He has however criminalized the average good citizen with his petty new laws and quasi state Stazi local police care of the council to enforce them and reap another levy just like the Sheriff of Nottingham of old...at least he was up front about it even if it is folk law...Brown and his thieves are certainly real.

The real police have been politicized and are unable to function due to the infernal political correctness fostered upon it.

Tell them you have a bugler in your house you will get fobbed off, tell them there is an offensive inanimate object call a Golly in the neighbors window and they will trounce the place with van loads of police.

THE ONLY WAY THE STREET CAN BE MADE SAFER IS BY:
1. bRING BACK 'NATIONAL SERVICE' AND KNOCK SOME DISCiPLINE INTO THE FERAL KIDS.
2. BRING BACK THE 'DEATH SENTeNCE' FOR ALL MURDERERS, PaeDOS AND TERRORISTS.
3. BRING OUR TROOPS BACK FROM THE NONSENCE WAR IN AFGhAN AND HAVE OUR BOYS POLICE THE STREET IN 'GANG' HOT SPOTS,
OR ENGLISH PEOPLE CAN TAKE THEiR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND, STOP BEING FRIGHTENED OF BEING ENGLISH (WHICH, FOR SOME BiZARre REASON WILL MAKE YOU A RASCIST!?) AND SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!"

By mark headly.. Posted September 21 2008 at 11:42 AM.

this man constantly, just like Blair before him, reels out lie after lie. Go or be gotten rid of.

By bill.. Posted September 21 2008 at 10:50 AM.

Brown continually tells us that crime is down since 1997 based on the manipulated British Crime survey figures. This is despite hospitals have record admissions to A and E for assults, such as knivings.
I wish Brown would be honest with the British electorate and then people just might listen to him.

By JOHN.. Posted September 21 2008 at 11:06 AM.

Gordon is talking sense here. Of course better policing and more responsiveness to the community will help to fight crime. The trouble is, Gordon Brown has proved time and again that he is never able to deliver on anything he says. Words alone cannot fix things.

By Steve.. Posted September 21 2008 at 9:35 AM.

Lies Lies Lies!!! Does he think that we honestlt believe this trash! It is because of Labour that our streets are a battle zone. remember Jaqui Smith went on Breakfast TV and stated, "There is no knife crime problem" Labour started this mess and they can not get us out. In quite a contradiction to their anthem, "Things, can only get worse" and I thank you Mr Brown!

By Tony Regan.. Posted September 21 2008 at 8:51 AM.

After almost 12 years, Gordon says that he will make our streets safe. Gordon, now is the time to resign, and take all the puppets with you. PLEASE.

By Geoff Stringer.. Posted September 21 2008 at 8:37 AM.

i earn 800 pounds a month, im lucky if i have ten pounds left over by the time ive paid the rent bills, food etc, got to the point where i cant afford to live, no fun living like this

By liz mcmahon.. Posted September 21 2008 at 8:35 AM.

Brown the worst PM,Premier this country has had since 1066!The most inconpetent government, laughing stock ever!People all over Europe just laugh at us, British, the idiomacy in our policies, the protest" about our human rights".
Gordon, go with dignity, it is already bad enough to be the worst PM and Chanchellor this country ever had, history will taught it in 10 years' time!

By Steve.. Posted September 21 2008 at 8:13 AM.

Too little, too late, Brown! To make the streets safe would mean more prison places and better treatment of prisoners' drug addicitions and mental probelms while in prison. Without that, re-offending will still be high. The police also are quick to arrest householders who try to protect their familes, but all too slow to deal with feral gangs who roam housing estates.

By Peter.. Posted September 21 2008 at 7:31 AM.

Get over it, Gordon. Your spin time has run out. Everyone knows it's all about people feeling they have a chance for a better and fairer life and a government that supports them, not fleeces them dry at every turn from cradle to grave, plus one more silly and unnecessary law, regulation and tax after another. I live in Australia and have no idea if the Tories will do any better, but the UK Labour Party way of doing things is "so last century". So, Gordon, get an election over with quickly if you feel your party has any more use or public support. Look up Lloyd George's Commons speech to Chamberlain in 1940 and act. No more waffle because no one is listening.

By E.Cowham.. Posted September 21 2008 at 6:02 AM.

It's alright saying it but there is action required and the need too enforce that.

By Anon.. Posted September 21 2008 at 6:01 AM.

Haha
What a joker!
The best way is to give us an election so we can rid oursellves from Brown's bunch of losers!
Perhaps he should allow those Gurkhas to stay as they would be start!

By george cozens.. Posted September 21 2008 at 4:10 AM.

Same old labour,This goverments thinking on law and order is to shift the blame onto someone else, when is there going to be someone in power who can actually do something and listen to the people,we need someone with balls and mr brown Has'nt got any i'm afraid.same old boring, time to go,You run out of ideas long ago,and in that time so many lives have been lost due to your partys lack of comittment to the tax payer
