The amazing 19-year-old from Mansfield, Notts, SMASHED the 20-year 800m freestyle world record to take a second gold and become Britain's most successful swimmer for 100 years.
It was one of the highlights of Super Saturday, which saw Britain scoop another three golds-in rowing and cycling-taking the medals total to 17 and putting team GB in an unbelievable seventh place in the Olympics table.
And the News of the World is today backing calls for the Queen to honour 19-year-old Rebecca for her 400m and 800m freestyle victories in Beijing.
In an exclusive interview, Becky's proud boyfriend Andy Mayor last night led the campaign to make her Dame Becky. He said: "That would be great. Anything that comes as a product of her success is richly deserved."
Rebecca broke the record for the 800m by more than two seconds to win in 8mins 14.10sec.
No British woman has ever lifted two swimming golds, and the last man to do it was Henry James, who won three in the 1908 London Games.
After Rebecca's 800m triumph, the world saw her team-mate Cassie Patten hug her pal and turn to the cameras saying: "The Queen, if you're watching - Dame Rebecca Adlington."
Kelly Holmes was made a dame after taking two golds on the track at the Athens Olympics and Andy, 22, also a full-time swimmer, is among those who think Rebecca deserves the same treatment.
"What she has achieved is amazing. I thought she was amazing before this but I love her even more now," he said.
"She is the greatest person I have ever met. Her success has completely blown me away."
Rebecca is staying in Beijing for the rest of the Games, but Andy will be whisking her off on a holiday around Europe after her triumphant homecoming.
He will meet shoe- crazy Rebecca at the airport with a pair of £500 Christian Louboutin heels, pictured below, the reward he promised if she won the 800m. Then he'll whisk her off on holiday. He said: "We are going travelling all over Europe, including Spain. It will just be great for both of us to spend some time away from the pool and spend some quality time together.
"I don't doubt we'll go for the odd swim though."
Talking of Andy yesterday, Rebecca beamed: "He's been watching it at home because we are going away on holiday afterwards and he couldn't do both, so the holiday came first."
Rebecca, who can now look forward to landing a string of lucrative sponsorship deals to supplement her Lottery-funded salary, added: "I'm just looking forward to spending some time with him and my family and then I'll be getting back in the pool in October.
"Breaking that world record has always been a goal of mine. It has always been at the back of my head that I could do it. But I didn't expect it at all.
"This is just everything I have ever dreamed of.
"I'm so glad the hard work has paid off."
We can reveal Rebecca and Andy, Scottish national butterfly champion, have been dating for six months.
Touching pictures of the couple, which they've posted on their internet Facebook sites, show they are deeply in love.
Andy, who swims for the City of Newcastle club, said: "I'm so proud of Rebecca and can't wait to see her. Her achievements are enormous and she is so touched by the reaction of everyone at home.
"She has been rewarded for all her hard work and training over the years and hopefully what she's done can spur on a new generation of swimmers to emulate her. I don't think what she has done yet as quite sunk in for any of us."
Rebecca's parents Steve and Kay were at Beijing's Water Cube complex to see her 800m win after missing her 400m triumph because of an internet air ticket sting.
Steve wept and punched the air as she swam to glory and after the medal was presented Rebecca threw Kay, 48, a bunch of flowers and blew kisses.
Later she paid tribute to their support. Rebecca said: "They have gone absolutely everywhere with me. The 400 freestyle win during the week was the first race ever that they have not watched."
Back home, Becky's delighted sisters Chloe and Laura were glued to the TV. Chloe, 24, said: "We were screaming at the TV and dancing around. I feel so happy and relieved for her."
Laura, 21, revealed Rebecca fought back from glandular fever two years ago to book her place in the Olympic record books.
"She was ill for around nine months. But Rebecca's such a strong character. She just worked her way through it."
Now Rebecca can look forward to a sensational homecoming - and a pair of Jimmy Choos from the local mayor Tony Egginton.
He said: "When we did our Olympic send off I promised her a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes if she brought back gold so it looks like I might have to eat my words now."
He plans a huge celebration when she returns on August 26.
He said: "We will be taking an open-top bus from the civic centre to the market place.
"There will be fireworks and then a big party."
