'Cheryl Cole's so weak we nearly lost her'

STRICKEN Cheryl Cole was just HOURS from death in her shock battle with malaria - and last night a close friend revealed: "She's not out of the woods yet."
The struggling X Factor judge is still on oxygen, on a drip and unable to talk as her brave fight against a deadly strain of the tropical disease continues in a top London private hospital this weekend.
Last night Cheryl's close friend told us: "We nearly lost her and the battle is far from over. She is so weak and this horrible illness has taken complete hold of her.

"It got so bad she was literally only hours from death's door. Thank goodness she was diagnosed in time.
"Even now she can't talk. She drifts in and out of consciousness and when she comes round all she can do is sob.
"There was no news coming out of the hospital because it was all so touch and go. We couldn't give any assurances to fans because there weren't any to give.
"The fact is, we came close to losing someone very special. She can't even speak at the moment and doesn't know what's happening to her. All she can do is sob. It's terrifying. And there's no end in sight."
Although Cheryl's malaria plight has been widely reported, almost no-one was aware of the near deadly consequences of her sickness.
For the first time the News of the World is revealing the true extent of her illness - picked up on holiday in Tanzania with close friend Derek Hough three weeks ago.
Cheryl's condition is so serious that:
- HER SKIN and eyes have turned YELLOW with jaundice.
- HER BUDDY Derek has stayed constantly by her side.
- HER WORK schedule for next few months - including live shows and X Factor appearances - has been axed.
- HER FRIENDS are appalled that cheating ex-husband Ashley has not been in touch with even one word of sympathy or support.
Fans' hopes that Cheryl would make a quick recovery were raised on Friday when she was released from the specialist tropical diseases unit at London's University College Hospital and moved to a top private clinic nearby.
But our source said the star was still seriously ill with the killer plasmodium falciparum strain of malaria and is expected to remain that way for some time.
The jaundice is a common side- effect. And there are growing fears the disease - which can cause kidney failure, seizures and coma - could quickly return if weak Cheryl doesn't take care to recover properly.
Her worried pal said: "Seeing Cheryl like this is so painful. She could easily have died. And she's not better, she's not even close. It's still a very serious situation and she's really going to have to battle.
"The fact she's been on oxygen for six days now, and is still on a drip, shows how severe things are. She has fluid on her lungs as well which they can't really treat at the moment because her blood count's so low.
"The problem is that her doctors have said her immune system was at the weakest point it could be. She's not in any position to fight even a cold, let alone a tropical bug like this. Her recovery is going to take a very, very long time.
"She's conscious for brief periods now, but when she's awake the illness is so overwhelming that all she can do is sob. She's in pieces, very confused and upset.
"She has no memory of Sunday to Wednesday at all. She's crying all the time and desperate for mum Joan not to leave her." Cheryl, 27, is so out of it she has not been told what's wrong or that she'll be bed- ridden for weeks. Apart from the medics her only contact has been with mum Joan Callaghan and close pal Derek, 25, who has now moved in to Cheryl's Surrey mansion.
Friends blame husband Ashley - who Cheryl is in the process of divorcing - for bringing her to the low point that made her easy prey to the disease. And they are shocked the Chelsea star, 29, hasn't even checked in on her from California where he has been on a playboy holiday with mates following the World Cup.
Instead he told a friend: "The fact is she's not part of my life any more."
And the pal told us: "Ashley is through with feeling guilty and sad. He feels there's nothing he can do seeing that Cheryl made the decision to cut him out of her life for good.
"He's on holiday and he didn't think there was any point in coming back to the UK to just sit around and not be able to do anything." But Cheryl's friend fumed: "Ashley's made no effort to get in touch with anyone, not even Joan. It's awful.
"I mean, the reason she was in such a bad way with her health was because of what happened with Ashley. The stress left her physically and emotionally destroyed. It's unbelievable he can swan around with girls on the beach in LA when the woman he was meant to love is fighting for her life."
But insiders are full of praise for American dancer Derek - rumoured to be Cheryl's lover. One said: "He's quickly become her rock. He's sorting everything out in her house and it's amazing she trusts him enough to be there as they only met eight months ago."
Cheryl has been working flat out since February when she decided to devote herself to her career after announcing the separation from Ashley. But drastic steps are now being taken to completely overhaul her life.

Cheryl will stay in hospital for at least TWO WEEKS and will not be seen for a further TWO MONTHS. Her management has already been forced to CANCEL her new album, which was due to be a Christmas blockbuster, and her eagerly anticipated appearance at the V Festival next month.
She will NOT appear at The X Factor bootcamp and will NOT be able to commit to appearing on the live shows, causing a headache for producers.
"Cheryl's not going to be back for a long time," insisted our source. "She won't be seen in public for at least two months.
"This is a big wake-up call. She can't go on as before or she'll push herself to the brink again."
Plans are underway to temporarily replace Cheryl on The X Factor with friend and bandmate Kimberley Walsh or current guest judge Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger.
A source on the show said: "Obviously all we care about is Cheryl's health and that's the most important thing. But we do have a show to produce."

The plasmodium falciparum strain of the parasite (pictured left under the microscope) is the most deadly and without prompt treatment, the outcome could have been far worse.
Up to 2,000 UK travellers a year get malaria. And Cheryl's recent domestic worries will have done little to help her.
Her immunity would be low and any loss of weight and strength would have contributed to the severity of the illness. And depending on the species of parasite, it can lie dormant in the liver to re-emerge years later.
Cheryl will need to be very careful once she's got herself better and just be aware it may return. Hopefully she'll make a smooth recovery and be back to her normal self soon.

Don't you people have doctors in London? Get her some Artesunate and she will be well. Malaria is not any dangerous disease to adults. Ask any African and for that Ghanaian. It is a tropical disease so if the doctors are finding it difficult why shouldn't they consult their counterparts in Africa? Wish her well!

I've been so worried ever since i heared about you passing out at the photoshoot.
You really really have to take good care of yourself when you get out of the hospital.
stop working THAT MUCH. take a moment to relax. working is good but working too much is not. i know, cause i've done that, to not have to be alone or be having enough time to think...of those things we wanna forget.
but it ended with me being ill for 3 weeks, probably cause i was as thin as you after losing 10 kgs.
so please take care of yourself now, everyone loves you :)

I agree with many on here as much as its awful and I do wish her well people need to get a grip do u honestly think she will even read these messages ....... no and day in day out people are dying from things just as bad or worse yet they dont get a second thought or mention and thats not to say that they are not talented there are soldiers out there dying for their country doctors nurses police and firemen saving lives everyday who get sick and die and what recognition do they get. You are young and have everything to fight for, think of the kids you raised so much money for and you will know you have most of the world wishing you well. I am totally devastated by the news concerning this beautiful young women. Cheryl has by her
humility and forebearance through the recent turmoil in her life, endeared heself to millions of people not just here but abroard. If anyone deserves to happy and content it is Cheryl. It serves no purpose to resurect the recent past, what matters now is her speedy and total recovery from this awful condition. I really do not think that Cheryl knows just how much she is loved and adored by the public and I hope that the good Lord sees fit to shine his countenance upon her in her hour of need.
Remember that she now has a little brother she aquired recently from the X Factor show who needs her love and support. Get well soon Cheryl we all want you back with us as soon as possible.
