For poorer...for poorer

GOING to the cheap-el and we're gonna get married!

Bride Susan McKeen and hubby William said till death us do . . . and managed to part with just £1,000 for their big day.

They had a credit crunch ceremony and saved a fortune on the average wedding bill of £11,000.

The thrifty newlyweds' money-saving ideas included homemade sarnies at the reception and a bridesmaid's dress made from CURTAINS.

Susan, 26, says: "I got one bridesmaid's dress off eBay for £15 and made another from our lounge curtains."

The groom's outfit was free but when the bride's dress arrived (£66 off eBay), it looked nothing like the picture and didn't fit.

Susan says: "I was in tears. But luckily my friends all pitched in to buy a new dress for £150 and gave it to me for nothing."

The 100 guests enjoyed a buffet of sarnies and cakes made by Susan in the McKeens' local hall in Dumfries-hired out for £76.

Even the honeymoon was cheap-camping in the Scottish Highlands for £70.

Hubby William, 41, who met Susan five years ago on a blind date, beamed: "It didn't matter that it cost so little. it was the best wedding I've ever been to."

Ah, brilliant, it can be done. For my 1st wedding just-made-redundant me and student bride were given the wedding dress, I wore my own suit, no best man or bridesmaids (friends came up at the right time to be witnesses), basic fee to the minister in our own church, borrowed one white BMW from a friend as wedding car, bride's godfather hosted wedding breakfast around his pool and BBQ, ever guest brought a plate of food to share. We had another friend who was a good amateur photographer so gave him a dozen rolls of film for us to have processed later and friends also handed over their own snaps for the album. Honeymoon was also on the cheap.

Second time around, my in-laws paid over £10,000. Lovely day, but they wouldn't hear of my suggestions for a BBQ event on the cheap...

Good luck to them. People spend far too much on weddings these days, as if the more money you spend the more likely your marriage is to succeed. It takes more than a lavish spread & being dressed up in clothes costing thousands to make a good marriage. Best wishes to the pair of them.
