Almost a third of businesses said the 1 per cent rise which comes into force in April 2011 would be a "major consideration" in whether or not they take on staff.
And another 14 per cent said it would PREVENT them employing people.
Nine out of ten firms also told the British Chamber of Commerce poll they had did not think the Chancellor had adequate plans to reduce the nation's £178 billion deficit.
