18 miscarriages...then one miracle

Baby ends eight-year heartache

MUM'S JOY: Angela & Mia

PROUD mum Angela Haston hugs miracle baby Mia Rose close-born after a record 18 MISCARRIAGES.

Incredibly Angela lost an unborn child every few months for EIGHT YEARS before having the daughter she yearned for.

As she and husband Jay beamed down at tiny Mia Rose, 27-year-old Angela said: "I can't believe it. Even as my bump grew I always expected to lose her, too. And I wouldn't let anyone buy anything for the baby at all, not until the day she was born."

The trauma began in 2000 after Angela gave birth to son Kieron.

Desperate to give him a playmate, Angela and van driver Jay, 30, were thrilled when she fell pregnant. But seven weeks later she lost the baby. At home in Polbeth, West Lothian, Angela told us: "We were absolutely devastated."

But four months later she was pregnant again, and again at seven weeks she miscarried. Doctors couldn't find a reason so the couple tried again. And again.

But each time the pregnancy failed at seven weeks.

Mum's baby joy after 18 miscarriages

Luck

Angela recalled: "No one could explain it. They said it was bad luck. I didn't know how much more I could take."

But after the heartbreak 18th attempt came an astonishing breakthrough. A blood test revealed Angela had NO FOLIC ACID -a vital B vitamin-in her body.

She said: "The doctor told me my body lost the ability to produce it when I had Kieron. Finally I had answers. At seven weeks the baby's spine is forming, and that NEEDS folic acid. That's why I was losing them all."

After booster jabs of the vitamin Angela was once more pregnant. But this time she safely passed the seven-week barrier and Mia Rose was born in August.

And this week delighted Angela admitted: "I still have to keep looking at her . . . I can't believe she's actually mine."

NEWS of the World GP Dr HILARY JONES writes:

Until now 18 miscarriages was unheard of. As folic acid is in green veg and meat a total lack is rare. But it can cause defects such as spina bifida so miscarriage is nature's way of aborting.

hi, i would like to thank you all again for the comments we're still recieving! Lisa i would suggest you ask your gp for a simple blood test for folic acid and vitamin b12 it's worth a go, your amount of folic acid you take when you are trying and fall pregnant are nothing like what your body needs if you have a deficency and your time line sounds like mine. As for everyone else good luck in the future hope you all find your dream. Have a great xmas and never give up hope xxxx

from Spina Bifida and we now got 3 lovely kids .

I lost 9 babies. I lost my first pregnancy - twins - at 8 weeks, statistics at the time said that 1 in 5 first pregnancies ended in miscarriage, I then had a normal pregnancy resulting in a healthy daughter. We tried immediately for another baby. In the following 5 years we suffered 6 more miscarriages, of between 8 and 12 weeks gestation.I was put on baby aspirin daily and I was soon pregnant again, only this time it was ectopic, we decided enough was enough and we wouldn't try any more, we had one healthy happy child and were grateful for that. However, it was that healthy happy little girl who prompted us to try "just once more" when she saw the scar left by the removal of the ectopic and asked if it meant she couldn't have a baby brother or sister. SO we decided that we would try once more, and whatever the outcome it would be the last attempt. It took 2 years for us to get pregnant, a couple of scares and a stressful 9 months, we had a beautiful healthy baby girl, now 13 years old and a complete joy as is our eldest girl, now a 21 year old married woman.

So there is always hope, We refused to give up, and reaped the rewards.

I love to hear of success stories like this one, and hope that their beautiful little girl brings them as much joy as my girls have brought me.

I hope all of you that have left comments of your own troubles are soon blessed with children. Never lose hope. Congratulations to Angela and her family. I can't help but feel anger that doctors didn't make the connection sooner and save so much heartache...

I have suffered 3 miscarriages and one chemical pregnancy over the last 2 years all of which were devasting. Some days I feel like I will never be a Mummy and feel like giving up but this lady never and many more brave ladies don't. I just feel like the fight has gone somedays but reading stories like this really does give me hope. Well done xx
