GRRR - EEN light for lion rescue

Pride is saved by generous NOTW readers campaign

SAVED: Lions in Oradea
SAVED: Lions in Oradea

A PRIDE of neglected lions rescued by kind- hearted News of the World readers has at last been given the go-ahead to come to Britain.

We received an amazing £120,000 in donations after our appeal to save more than a dozen lions held in cramped cages at a rundown Romanian zoo.

They could not be moved until council chiefs in the town of Oradea agreed to give their blessing.

But now transport can be arranged to move the pride to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, at Branton, near Doncaster, south Yorks, in January.

Park manager John Minion said: "This is a great relief. We got a letter from Romania last week giving permission for the move."

The park has just enough cash to rescue the lions, but they hope to reach the £150,000 target to build a new home for the lucky big cats.

I am so happy that the lions are going to be moved here, I donated £10, and its the best £10 I have ever spent!!! These beautiful creatures deserve nothing but the best when they arrive in the UK and I hope that they spend the rest of their lives happy and content!!! Well done to everyone who reached into their pockets to help them!! Makes me sad to see that the general public are kind enough to donate, and there are footballers who earn £150,000 in a week and would prefer to go and buy a Ferrari or somwthing else material!!!! x

What a wonderful cause to give to and I think it's such a fantastic thing that Yorkshire Wiildlife Park are doing also The News of World as without them publicising this plight I would never have known about it and I was more than happy to contribute to their rescue.

The way in which the lions were kept was done by man and therefore it is up to man to right that wrong and at least let them enjoy what years they have left, which I hope are long ones, in decent surroundings.

It's good to see that people do still care even in this present climate.

Great news and well done to everyone.

Every day must feel like a year to these poor creatures. If every reader moved by this story in The News of The World just donated a pound, we would reach the target today. As the lions have now been named after the England team players, have any of the players donated or even been made aware of the plight of these lions? Thank you to the News of The World for running this story again, and to all the caring public who have donated.

Thank you News of the World for publishing this story in the first place. These poor lions have tugged at everyones heart strings and this publicity has made this possible . I am sure that we can all give what we can to reach the the 30 k so that the lions are safe at Yorkshire Wildlife Park as its not a moment too soon . The poor cats look so miserable , thank you John Minion for helping them.

I have been moved to tears to read about the plight of these magnificent lions. Glad to know that humanity is not dead & my heartfelt appreciation to YWP for having the dedication & desire to do the right thing. It is not just about conservation - it goes beyond that... how can we allow ANY animal to live in such misery - one that man has created in the first place - and then throw up our arms & say it's too hard - can't be fixed or let's not bother with this lot, they're a waste of time - that's just a cop out!! Since when is any living creature a waste of space??? It will be a day to celebrate when they are all out of their living hell. I praise all those who have donated & made this all possible. Thank you very much. Maxine.
