The News of the World's exclusive ICM poll also reveals almost two thirds think mainstream parties have NO credible policies on immigration.
But the poll also shows just six per cent back the BNP's vile policies on the issue, with 90 per cent rejecting the party's "end all immigration" policy and 69 per cent opposing the racist view put forward by their odious leader Nick Griffin that white people's interests should be put first.
Today's ICM poll is the first full test of British opinion since Griffin's appearance on the BBC's Question Time on Thursday night.
And it makes chilling reading for the mainstream parties, with 54 per cent saying there are too many immigrants and 65 per cent believing foreign arrivals get favourable treatment on housing and other benefits.
It also reveals one third of voters believe in a core BNP policy that people from ethnic minorities should lose all state benefits, including NHS treatment, to pay for a "resettlement policy" for those wishing to leave the country.
Narrow majorities also oppose the teaching of sexual relationships in primary schools and say the Islamic faith treats women as second class citizens - both core BNP beliefs.
While little over one in 20 people, just six per cent, think the BNP have the right policies to sort out the problem, they are lukewarm about the mainstream parties, with 26 per cent saying the Tories have the best immigration policy and 21 per cent backing Labour.
Today's poll does NOT say the British public are unrealistic about immigration. Only 10 per cent say there should be a stop on all future immigration.
But it is clear the BNP message IS getting through, with 44 per cent saying the white working class has been abandoned by the mainstream parties.
ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 504 adults on October 23 and 24, 2009. Interviews were conducted across the country and the results have been weighted to the profile of all adults. ICM is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.

Stop paying benefits to imigrants until they have earned them for three years. End of problem.
By Peter.. Posted October 27 2009 at 4:29 PM.
if any british person was in another counry and was ill, pregnant, injured ect... we'd have to pay for the bill or would be sent back to britain to be treated, in britain immigrants get the same if not better treatment than the british do at the exspence of the british tax payer. someone please tell me the logic in that ? im all for any race or religion but try equal rights in all nations not just this one !!

We have far to many immigrants living here!STOP them coming over,we are already over populated.Could go on about it but nothing will get done!
By SARAH.. Posted October 26 2009 at 1:17 PM.
Things have already got out of hand. Too late to shut the stable door, No point attacking the BNP. The establishment is gonna get overhauled by the people. Europe is one great Yugoslavia & we all know where it is gonna end!

the others arent willing to do anything.they find it easier to just throw abuse at the bnp in order to stop people voting for them.when really, they should be doing something to get people voting for THEM.
dont waste your time bringing the bnp down, focus more on your own policies, maybe then people will back away from the bnp.

I am absolutely sick to death of reading that only the working class, Chav's or people on benifits, support the BNP. We live in Chigwell, my husband and two sons are in banking, and I am a housewife. We both come from working class, caouncil house backgrounds, and we are very proud of that. As far as the BNP are concerned, we would 'not' dream of voting for anyone else.

How ironic that the politically correct BBC thought it appropriate to bully and hound Nick Griffin for holding unorthodox views whilst former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw who had pushed for the invasion of Iraq was treated as a respectable elder statesman. Remember that Nick Griffin and the BNP opposed the invasion of Iraq!!! It seems that as far as the BBC and the political establishment are concerned, opposing immigration is a greater moral wrong than starting an illegal war that killed thousands and left hundreds of British servicemen dead or maimed. Could it be that the political establishment and the BBC are the true racists here as they turn a blind eye to Iraqi dead?

Questioning politicians about present and future policies is a meaningless farce unless lie detectors are used.
By Nick W.. Posted October 25 2009 at 11:06 PM.
immigration needs looking at, up until now any person who mentioned this was said to be a racist. You look at the TV shows such as "Border Control" and nine times out of ten the people that are questioned can never find the correct paperwork, they all seem to know how to work the system and end up being released. Then we find out that the relavent goverment department have a back log of over 40000 cases and more arriving every day. I was brought up in a Labour strong hold, but the old values died when Bliar came to power, the average person in the street feels they are not being heard.
They tried to say that the BNP got the EURO Seats as a protest against the MPs claims fiasco, wrong it was because no one in power will face up to the fact that we have no control over our borders, which sadly affects genuine asylum seekers. A few points from the BBC's Question Time on Thursday night the only person who I felt spoke the most sense was the Conservative Party, as for Jack Straw enough said.

Andrew Neather, a speechwriter for Tony Blair and other labour politicians, has said admitted that from 2000 the Labour government secretly pursued a deliberate policy of unprecedented immigration to make Britain more multicultural.
This affects our society fundamentally, yet the main political parties still refuse to even acknowledge the public's concern. It's their shameful neglect of democracy that's swelling the BNP's support.

Q. Who will pay for the deportation/repatriation plan to achieve the BNP's vision of an "all white Britain"?
A. The British taxpayer.
Q. Who will make up the tax shortfall generated by 10m taxpayers and consumers who had been ejected because they were not white enough?
A. The British taxpayer.
Q. If Britain pulls out of the EU, who will fund the return of hundreds of thousands of Brits in France, Spain, Italy etc. who will no longer have any right to stay there?
A. The British taxpayer.
Go ahead, vote BNP for greater properity.
By Ray .. Posted October 25 2009 at 9:46 PM.
The BNP will get my vote.....the media & twittering classes just dont get it !!!...........try living 6 months in an inner city back to back as opposed to a leafy lane in an affluent commuter belt & you just MIGHT begin to "get it".
By yorkshirerealist.. Posted October 25 2009 at 9:38 PM.
The BNP will continue to grow stronger over the next five years. The Labour Party is ideologically committed to the idea of increased immigration and the Conservatives are committed to bringing Turkey into the EU leading to the biggest wave of immigration in British history. The consequent growth in the BNP will then surely follow as night follows day.

Every down trodden country needs a hero, not a CONSCIENCIOUS objector, MR STRAW. Now we have got one. Lets SUPPORT him.

Why all this talk about 'non-Eu immigrant' numbers being curbed..The number of EU migrants coming in is also part of the problem. As new EU member states are created their people see the UK as the soft touch it clearly is in the eyes of many people. I'm not a fan of the BNP but I can see where they are coming from on their policy on immigration.
The other political parties need to get a grip and FAST. Don't be surprised if, at the next election, you see more BNP candidates being elected!
By RobTob.. Posted October 25 2009 at 6:30 PM.
Numbers are the problem and not, as the politically correct bullies suggest, is the problem of immigration.
There are some very good points made in these comments and it wouldnt be a bad idea to have male immigrants prove their sincerity by spending 3 years within the armed forces in a similar role of the old National Service.
By Philip Harrison.. Posted October 25 2009 at 6:11 PM.
the facts are: we are only a small island- not austrailia (who refuse immigrants) and cannot sustain the immigrant intake! we give immigrants housing and benefits when the indiginous people of this country get nothing! immigrants are not required to work first in order to gain benefits like we would have to do in other countries! in another country would you have access to free healthcare? benefits from the off? housing that even the natives dont get ? the answer is NO ! so why do you all keep backing parties that wont change these things - things that are in the natives peoples interest - the voters! this is why i dont vote - mistrust is rife, as long as their pockets are lined they dont care, but its us that have to put up with the day to day problems that immigration brings! the answer to the world should be if you come to britain you get nothing ! you work, you rent/buy your home, you pay in , not just take out!
By punkbudgie.. Posted October 25 2009 at 5:11 PM.
I agree with other comments the BNP will get more mp,s elected unless the main parties get heads together on immigration stop it right now.
By soulman.. Posted October 25 2009 at 4:59 PM.
Why are politicians feigning surprise at this?
The electorate are spoken to as if they are morons, we have been sold out to Europe with the prospect of Blair, the most reviled man in recent political history, being made President. Immigration it has now been disclosed was a Neo Labour exercise in social engineering. MP's have lost all respect after the Expenses Scandal and a growing number oppose the war in Afghanistan. So along comes a party whose retoric addresses many of these issues.
Where are people to go to get their fears and aspirations recognised? Not the main parties and after 12 years of Labour and John Majors Tories before that its too late to change. The BNP and UKIP are here to stay.
By Michael.. Posted October 25 2009 at 4:41 PM.
I suppose those in favour of the BNP's immigration policy would also be happy for the millions of Brits living abroad to be sent back to their country of origin?
The BNP still haven't explained where they will find the money for their financial repatriation scheme.
If every non-indigenous person took up their offer, it would cost billions to fund the proposal.
By Sheila in London.. Posted October 25 2009 at 3:17 PM.
When are people going to get it into their heads that the BNP not only want to freeze immigration, they want to reverse it.
They seek to repatriate legally settled immigrants and their descendants.
That's a totally different ball game to the argument against mass immigration.
It's barbaric.
By Fit Lad.. Posted October 25 2009 at 3:03 PM.
It wouldn't make any difference if 100% said immigration must be controlled.
The government (any) would totally ignore it.
By Andy.. Posted October 25 2009 at 11:54 AM.
The BNP has done this country a favour. At least the mainsteam political parties will now HAVE to address the issue.
To me there's a huge difference between outright racial hatred which the vast majority do not entertain, and not wanting hordes of other nationalities living here in the UK, which the vast majority prefer and want. The latter is not being racist or extremist - just plain common sense - an ability that no politician seems to have.

I agree with another comment already made. Close the borders completely until we can sort out all the illegals that are already here.
I don't think we'll ever need any more immigrants (except maybe doctors, nurses etc) because of the high birthrate these immigrants have anyway.

Their support will continue to grow until the other main parties accept that we are sick of the open door policy this country has and of the reverse racism that also exists . The "PC" brigade are to blame for a lot of it . Can anyone truly say they were offended by children singing baa baa black sheep ? Or that they are offended by our christian country displaying nativity scenes at Christmas ?
Its time we adopted policies from other countries such as we only allow people in who have a relevant skill to offer or have enough funds available to support themselves .
Why do the so called asylum seekers manage to come through all the other safe european countries and end up on our doorstep ? Surely a true asylum seeker would stop at the first safe haven they could find .
By Ziggy.. Posted October 25 2009 at 9:18 AM.
Putting a stop to 'arranged marriages' would be a start, there are enough 'Brides' and 'Grooms' to pick from, within our over populated cities already, no need to go abroad to pick up another 'burden' of not being able to speak the national language, who are a drain on the public purse, or access for 'other family' members to come visiting! and not go back! because they need medical treatment etc.. Oh the list is endless! it saddens me that our once great nation is on its knees, will we get no thanks in the end for being tolerant. Unfortunatley the BNP will get people to sympatise with them, just by the sheer ignorance of the three main parties buring their stupid heads in the sand and not taking our worries seriously :-(
By teabag.. Posted October 25 2009 at 6:49 AM.
I see no reason why we cannot block all immigration until we sort out the ones who are already here illegally
By makem.. Posted October 25 2009 at 5:31 AM.
This is no shock people have felt this way for years and unless Labour do something the BNP will grow at the next election.
